I'm so dissapointed in myself...

Yeah, you kinda dogged it... but just think.... you can screw up a lot worse than that!!!!!!!

PLEASE don't red rep me, I feel bad enough as it is.... Yes, I dogged it.

Well, As many of you know, I take photos at different tournaments of the players.

So, I get an email on Monday afternoon at 1:45 pm from an ESPN3.com email address:

Hello,

I was told to contact you per the people at the US Open 9Ball Championship, Chesapeake. I am looking for a couple of high resolution action photos from last year's tournament to accompany a brief listing of the championship.

Can you provide?

It takes me a while to get Diana Hoppe's email address and at 9pm I reply:

Hi Shawn,

I have photos of some of the players, but not from that event. If you need some photos from that event, Diana Hoppe can help you out (she took photos there last year). Her email is: xxxyyyy@blah.com

Thanks,
Melinda

He replies at 9am on Tuesday:

You probably can help me. As long as the photos represent a 9 Ball Tournament it is fine. Please send action, someone taking aim maybe or just after a shot, no bigger than 3 MB each (per email). The photos run thumbnail size so should be easily identifiable.

Then an hour later he emails me again and says:

I tried to email Diana but her spam blocker is blocking me with an ERROR message. Do you have a phone number? Are you able to send me something?

Then at 2pm today (Wednesday) I send an email:

Shawn - how many different players do you need and when do you need them by?

He replies in less than a minute:

The deadline has passed. Sorry.

OMG! I then ask him if they ran the story w/o photos or did he get photos from another source and he says:

We cannot include events that do not have a photo accompanying. I contacted you and (someone else).

I then see his signature says "Photo Editor ESPN the Magazine"

To say I am sick to my stomach is an UNDERSTATEMENT!! OMG! Billiards could have been in ESPN Magazine again and I dogged it b/c I didn't know he had a such a short deadline!

I told him to contact me in the future and I would respond ASAP next time, now that I know the deadlines are so short.

I am an embarrassment to the billiard community. Mr. Wilson should ban me. :(

Don't sweat it...The truth is he probably dropped the ball on this story and waited until the last minute. You did everything you could do...People see your work all the time and it's great..I actually used to be in to photojournalism and I moved on to something else...Opportunities come and go as you already know..It'll come back and hopefully they won't be throwing it together at the last minute again..:)

You can say that again....

Awesome work there...Chefas!

Website is very impressive. GREAT use of Flash!!

I love the use of low light, yet everything is razor sharp. (example...Bride running in opposite direction thru grass) Was a strobe used there?

What equipment are you using....?? (have to ask!)

The bride running through the grass (actually she's the daughter of the groom who was included in the ceremony wearing a wedding dress) was not shot using a flash. She was running around and I waited for her to catch a ray of sunlight for the shot.

Most shot on the website were shot with Nikon D200. Now I shoot almost exclusively with D3. I carry a D300 with me too but shoot about 3 to 1 with the D3.

I've only shot one pool tournament because, well, they're mostly on weekends...which is also when most weddings take place :) And that one I specifically tried to avoid the normal 'pro' pool shot. But I admire your and akatrigger's work there. It's nice to have good photogs on here whose pool work I can enjoy.

One problem there....

Neither the webmaster, or site owner can give you legal permission to use the images. Permission has to come from the photographer. Since he's the legal 'owner' of the images. (In the majority of cases, anyway.)

I just went thru a similar situation....it's no fun at all.
No problem because 99% of the time the site owner or webmaster created or can get permission from the person that created the sound, picture, code etc. If I have an email in hand from the person responsible for displaying (administrative or owner contact of a site) that states that it is ok for me to display their created content elseware then it becomes the responsibility of the person that I got permission from if they state that they are the creator. If they state that they are not the creators and direct me to someone that generated it then I get permission from them.

Me, too!

On Johnny's website it clearly states: All photos copyright of johnnyarcher.net, unless otherwise noted. Contact webmaster for permission.

Yet, a photo I took of Johnny playing straight pool (that is only on his website) was sent along with a Press Release from Dragon Promotions.

Hmm... so much for: All photos copyright of johnnyarcher.net, unless otherwise noted. Contact webmaster for permission.

You know you can sue them for your compensation for that. And you should. CW thinks he can get away with just anything, apparently.

I'm sending you RED REP on this one!!! J/K :grin-square:

This person obviously wanted YOUR pictures, not Dianna's. Dianna takes great pics as well, but when you suggested contacting Dianna and he said, " You probably can help me. As long as the photos represent a 9 Ball Tournament it is fine. Please send action, someone taking aim maybe or just after a shot, no bigger than 3 MB each (per email). The photos run thumbnail size so should be easily identifiable.", You should have quit trying to contact Dianna and sent him your photos!

I think some got the impression that you were gonna send Dianna's photos and that's why you were trying to contact her. I didn't get that idea from your post.

Your photos are the bomb babes!!! You got what they want! You got what we want.

Well, thanks, but as I mentioned in another post this isn't about me, but about Billiards' missed opportunity. :(

If taking photos was my full time job, maybe I would.

If it keeps happening, I'll email the company (or maybe I'll email them soon about it), but I'm not too worried about - just wanted to share a little story b/c others were talking about it.

Just to be fair, he might have asked Johnny about the photo. So, I don't know all the facts.

Dogging it was a little harsh to use. Not being able to fully capitalize on the oppourtunity because of unknown timelines and incomplete associated facts is more like it. Your rep in the billiard community is impecable and because of your selfless efforts many more doors will open. Besides, dogging it is a whole other subject in the UK. Trust me on this.

Your lamentation is the best example of why the Supreme court of United States of America did not accept POLYGRAPH as the evidence under Federal rules of evidence.Even though you were not responsible for providing the photos to a unknown caller claimed to be from ESPN,you are still feeling guilty of wrong doing.Supreme court had long time ago recognized this phenomenon of irrational /unreasonable guilt some humans harbor which may give the wrong readings on polygraph there by resulting in the punishment of innocent people. your local police officers administering these tests is a different story.I call it a parallel governament with ii USA.
I am sorry that I have to use your case to desseminate information on Federal rules of evidence.Stop feeling guilty and take care of yourself.

quite frankly, the editor should have given you a timeline to work with - you did the best you could given the circumstances.
