I've always said that I was just a 'Feel" player when asked how I do the things I do with a cue ball. I've found it hard to teach someone if they're not on the same page as me from the get go. Being a feel player, if that's the correct terminology for it, isn't something I ever gave much thought about, until now. I've agreed with so many variations of explanations of " How To " do this or that on a pool table, that now I realize that I don't have a clue as to what I'm talking about. So, if you're this far into my post, ya may as well go all the way, cuz it gets better.
This is how I would begin to teach someone if they were a first time player, knew nothing about english, and couldn't run 2 balls to save their life. " Quit now while you still have your sanity."
Okay, on to a "C" player. This is a player who claims to know how to make balls but doesn't know how to use english. I would teach them how the CB reacts off of the tip, the transfer of english from CB to OB, and how to "Throw" the OB into the pocket. This usually gets them by until they practice for another 200 hours or so, or until they think they are a "B" player.
"B" player. This player can make balls, play position half the time, and have an idea of shot selection percentages. They just aren't consistent enough yet. I would tell them that they have what it takes in their game to be a real good player with a lot more practice, more tournaments under their belt, and lots of action games, getting AND giving weight.
"A" players. Well, for some reason, no "A" players have come to me for advice.
So, I feel as though I still must not know what the hell I've been preaching for all these years but I get by with my game. When I practice, that is. Sometimes, when trying to explain a shot or a critical moment in a match that I have just played, I have trouble explaining what I did as far as what english I used, or what type of stroke I used, because I really don't know. I get down on the ball, take about 2 or 3 warm-up strokes, and fire away. When I miss, I do know why. But, I usually tell myself that I hit it too slow or too hard because I know, in my heart, that I was lined up correctly. But because I use so much english on the CB, speed is a big factor in the outcome of the shot. So, if I miss, my "Feel" wasn't there. But, if the "Feel" wasn't there, and I'm a "Feel" player, then what the hell did I pull the trigger for?
So dammit, can somebody please explain to me what the hell I'm talking about because I "FEEL" like shit now? I'm in the middle of this and I don't even know what side I'm on, can ya "FEEL" me? I hope I get absolutely no replies to this because that means whoever reads through this entire post, I've just wasted about 10 minutes of your time. And 20 of mine. But who cares? Peace, John.
