Guy suposedly from Indiana by name of Chuck Bond comes in little tennessee pool room trying to Wolf up a game for about a nickel.Has anybody heard of him [speed etc.]

If that is all he wanted to play for, why not play?

It's becoming commonplace to come on here and get the nuts on how someone plays.

Step up and play, you obviously don't think you can win because you are asking an internet forum about how he plays, maybe you can get a champion to play and ask if you are on the right side of a $10 sweat bet while the champion plays Mr. Bond. :)

I just moved to nj,I went to comet billiards and with in 20 minutes I have a man asking me to play..Now I'm a c+ b- player and I said cheap sets he said Yes race to 5 for 20..WTF okay why not ,turns out the man is Carmen lombardo a strong A player,I didn't give to craps the action was cheap enough, the point is step up and If you got game which I do play and adjust the bet.I lost 80 that day but gained a good playing partner.

And would you do the same if he wanted to play for $500?

You sure his name wasn't James Bond. IIRC his game was overrated, played about 7 speed...

Don'nt get guns out, just thought this old hillbilly [blind in one eye,no vision in the other]might make a little score.Last time I played a guy unknowingly it turned out to be B. Ashcraft,he played pretty smooth if you know what I mean........

Chances are he aint Ashcraft then. A description might help if his name isn't Chuck Bond;) This way I can trap him up if he comes this way:D

Be careful what you ask for, as you may end up feeling the wrath from those that follow the unwritten pool players code. The unwritten pool players code says that the home room player should always take the worst of it by playing blind, even when the stranger probably knows the home room player's speed, or plays well enough that it probably does not matter how well the home room player plays. The unwritten pool players code says that it would be unfair for the home room player to try to determine the traveling players speed in an effort to try to make a fair game. It emphatically stresses that the home room player must always allow all of the advantages to remain with the traveling player.

Violation of the unwritten pool players code may result in penalties being handed out by those that follow the unwritten pool players code. These can range from public ridicule, to assault with bodily injury, or worse. This is very serious--you must follow the unwritten pool players code at all costs, regardless of how silly it may be.

(Disclaimer-This post was made in a sarcastic tone. Just clarifying since some people thought it was intended to be serious. There was a lengthy thread on the above topic recently and I am still amazed at how far some people take the whole "nobody is allowed to give out or ask for any info on a players speed" stuff.)

I look forward to the day that happens. I live in reality, they better come strong.

Hopefully the sarcasm in my post was evident and was not misunderstood. It amazes me how far some people take the whole "nobody is allowed to give out, or ask for, any info on a players speed" stuff.

Okay, thanks:D I did think you were serious. I am going to laugh at the first person that comes up to me all strong, saying I knocked their action.:D

Don't let these guys give you that sh#$ about just getting up and showing some heart and play. If the guy was wanting $50-100 a set, I might be giving you the same sh#$. But, when asking for $500, you know he's no huckleberry. Assume the worst. Also, the same guys that talk about showing some heart and jumping up for $500 just to see where they match up are just plain lying. There might be two or three on here that will bet $500 blind, but the rest wouldn't even talk about it. Guarantee it. Information is how to make money in pool. Your information and line is better than the other guy? If it is, you get paid. Period. I guarantee you that "James Bond" knows within a half of a ball how you play. You just keep asking questions. If you don't feel comfortable, then don't play. Lotta talk on here about showing heart. I will give a buck or two worth of action to most "players," and some might not like it either. Noone except a strong player (usually getting staked) jumps up for five beans blind.

On the other hand, it kind of is a rule not to queer some people's action. (I use the term politically correct meaning not to turn and ruin people's livelihood.) But, information gets you paid. You can go to a tournament, never pick up a cue (just sidebetting the matches) and come out on top, just by information. You can be a B+ to an A player and make money travelling around, assuming your information is better than the next guy.

Feel it out. Not comfortable, don't play. Bet this. "He will be comfortable."

What Part Of Tennesse Is He Still Around There? Im In Miss. And Just Like The Last Post I Will Play Some For A 50 Or 100 Blind And Then Go From There!!!

yea

all my friends say im crazy cause whoever walks in has action lol but 500 means the guy prob plays super strong but 50s and 100s you can pull up before losing all your lunch money so the guy cant high jack you

Tap. Tap. Here's a guy who's been there and done that.

I have played and bet fairly high a few times myself, but if some stranger walks into my poolroom and asks me to play for $500, I know that he knows EXACTLY how I play. And trust me, it has happened, but in a roundabout way. They usually have some line of jargon they lay on me before getting around to talking about how we can play. I can usually feel it coming.

At my last poolroom, road men began to wander in after a year or so, because I was playing almost anybody 50-100 a game One Pocket. As soon as they began to high roll me, I would offer to play them a little Banks and bet a little higher, like 100-200 a game Short Rack. And believe me they knew about that too, and more often than not, they turned me down.

I did have a few brave souls play me some Banks, and they didn't like it afterwards. I'm no Freddie, but I can make a cross-side or two, or three, or four. :)

Thanks Jay. Most of the guys that talk about "trying out for $500" wouldn't bet fatback's greasy. Kills me. Someone come's looking for someone, they are 90% sure they have the nuts, stone cold.

Craw-man,
Amen.

P.S. - anyone not wanting me to talk about their proficiency level should kindly wear a disguise. This is the public domain, and we are the pool paparazzi.

I am not sure why people rag on people coming on the board and asking about someone...

Road Players just need to catch up with the century...

If I remember correctly....back in the dayRoad Players would typically put on a stall and even set up situations to make them look...not so good ...and wait for the word to get around town...(They even had to lose money in some situations to do that)

IFI was a road player (in the current day)...I think I would use a board like this to "create" action...I would be estatic to have someone post a "who is this guy" thread about me.....I would have a userename created and ready to go and post in the thread a reply of "oh he is alright but nothing great" ......or maybe a "he is a go off artist" ...or other such comment to get the actionhounds thinking.

Hell...you woldn't even have to lose a dime to do it...

Beside that....It seems to me that these days...the more popular you are...the more action you get...Look at Shane...I don't see any shortage of action for him.

These days...If you are a road player that has to rely on hiding from the world to catch a few suckers here and there...you probably have chosen the wrong profession.
