Insanity. How does a payer like this not have a sponsor?

What if I told you that I know a junior world champion that has a Fargo rating of just under 800. This person practices daily and can hold is own against any pro yet they can't afford to go to travel to any large events like derby or the us open due to expenses.

I've personally seen this person run a 7 pack in 10 ball on a difficult diamond in action and down money.I've seen him beat pro's like Rodney morris, Oscar Dominguez, Fransisco Bustamante, Albin Ouschan, Scott Frost, Mika Immonen and Alex Pagulayan.
He has the potential and to be world class and it makes me so sad to see such an amazing player handicapped by the shlump pool is in.

If you know anyone interested in supporting this player please let me know! I'm sure a deal can be made.

Finally, lets hear some guesses!

Did he beat all those listed players at bigger tournaments close by ? Maybe he is just not saving the Money he is making on the table ? I understand you have to spend money to make money but you have to same somewhere.

Those were in tournament. Even though he wins or places in almost every event he goes in it's still barely any money. He has no secondary job. Pays all the bills with pool.

See, that's what sucks, using the winnings to pay bills, If it were me i would tell the guy change things up by getting a stable job then worry about pool, if this guy is really that good then his action is going to dry up then he will have no source of income.

Do it the old fashion way, work, save then chase the passion with the extra money might take a while but he is still young.

Hint hint hint.

Pool is not a career choice and he should be thanking his lucky stars options exist.

Virtually NOBODY cares if he can draw his rock or make 84 balls in a row.

Its not hard...,

Maybe he should start by trying to get a job with a company that's involved in sports. Academy, Dicks, Gander Mountain, Cabela's, Champs, etc..,

He needs to tell them that he is a Pro Athlete that's participates in regular events and that he would work in any capacity and in return only seeks a position with a flexible schedule so that on occasion he can compete in regional or national events.

If he takes in a portfolio and a event schedule he might find a willing partner just like many of the Olympic athletes do.

Yeah, sadly, it really seems that is true, among most of the general population. I think this sport would be almost completely dead if it were not for the leagues (like APA, BCA, and others) that seem to be the only thing that keeps the sport alive. And the fans and pool companies that support the pro pool events.

Drinking is what keeps these games alive.
If you don't believe that then come over to Billiards Sports Bar and Grill, on Friday, and Saturday night.
Take the booze away and the only thing left is the pool table in your basement.

And, more in keeping with the thread, lets hope this young fellow doesn't get a backer. The last thing he needs to be doing is spending the next ten years living out of the back of an '86 Buick Station Wagon. Encourage him to go to school. To get a job. To build a good foundation first.

I am really surprised that he is able to pay the bills (rent, utilities, and food) on just his pool winnings, with the small amount that most of the pool tournaments pay out. I am surprised that any of the players are able to survive (without maybe a part time job on the side), after all of the expenses and everything (unless they are among the elite, and they get most of their expenses paid by a sponsor, like Meucci might be doing for Skyler Woodward for example). I do not know, but I imagine that most pro's do have jobs on the side, when they are not at pro events. I just do not see how any of them can survive, on pool winnings alone. I mean the biggest paying tournament (in the US, by far) in the entire year, is the US Open, right(?), and it pays $50,000 to the winner. Most other pro tournaments only pay out a fraction of that amount throughout the year, right? And there is a lot of very strong competition. I imagine only the players with backers, or sponsors, and players with savings are able to travel around and play in all of the events. All of the others most just stay local, and find at least a part time job, and just play as much pool as possible in their free time (but only if their local area has a strong pool scene, with good paying local tournaments).

Yeah, I believe it. It has been ages since I seen a very lively pool hall that did not serve liquor. Are there any left here in the US? I believe that most of them have ran out of business (the ones that did not have a liquor license), and any that are left are mostly dead (other then on league nights). The Bank Shot here in Louisville just serves beer (no liquor), and it is mostly very slow I think (other then on league nights). I do not know, but I imagine that back in the 90's, that place was packed full of pool players every night of the week.

I'm pretty sure he is referring to Vilmos Földes from Hungary. He has been living in the fresno area for the last few years. Not sure how he makes his money because I have never asked but I know he plays world class and wins or places high in a lot of the tournamnets he enters. However, he is sponsored by Mezz Cues but I do not know to what level.

In addition to a Jr world championship he has also finished in the top 5 of the world 9 ball championship as well.

And to top it all off he is genuinely one of the nicest professionals you will ever meet.

Other then being a good player, what does the player offer the sponsor? Positive role model, well mannered,a closet that isnt full of skeletons?

When the established pros are not making any money..............

Yeah, how can they be making a living, when an Open (open to pro level players) tournament only gets a turn out of only 28 players(?), like the event in the link below.

28 players for an open event is just really sad, I think. How much could 1st place have possibly paid? Not much I am guessing. That was a few years ago, but I am guessing that the pool scene has not changed much since then.
