who can tell me the easiest way to put a pin in a bar stick, how to tap the hole? for a 3/8x10 shaft thread. thanks in advance

If you have to ask how to tap and thread for a pin you should probly take it to one of the qualitfied cuesmiths in your area?? I can think of two off the top of my head Brent Heartman (BHQ), Dickie Neighbors (rhncue).

good thinkin' and dually noted; but i was asking how it is done...

after the cue is chucked up and running true. i center drill, drill and tap

same method for inserts. i dont use perfect inserts so no bore is nessessary.

hope this helps

You mount the cue butt in a lathe using collars (so as not to dent the wood or finish). You have to have that lathe set up with a 2nd chuck or using collars at the rear of headstock to hold the butt PERFECTLY level (use a dial indicator). Next face off the joint end of the butt. Next center drill that surface. Next drill or drill & bore the correct size hole. Using the tap in the tailstock chuck, TAP THE HOLE. Epoxy the joint screw. THIS SOUNDS EASY, but to get it right takes a lot of practice & VERY GOOD EQUIPMENT...JER

jer do you put your pin after finish or are you just talking about re installing a pic. i do it pre finish

thanks for the responses. how fast is the tap bit spinning to tap the hole, is it a slow process like metal? or is the butt spinning and the bit stationary? thanks

bit is stationary, the tailstaock gets pulled into the headstock and you need to slow the metal lathe down.i put mine in back gear.push it in and pull it out at the end or the theads on the end will be mush.

Sorry I was'nt trying to be a wise guy. Just putting in a pin is not as easy as it sounds.. Expecially if you dont have the right equipment.

I put the SCREW in then joint the shaft to the butt . I join the 2 together & finish sand. THEN I finish...JER

I chuck up the butt & turn the headstock BY HAND, to make the threads. I do BACK the tailstock out, UNDER power...JER

Jer, you must be really strong to turn the HEADSTOCK by hand.
I handcrank the chuck myself ( released from gear ).

I drill bore the hole, tap, then route for the alignment barrel ( radial pin ).
I route the holes on the shaft too. Powerfeed as slow as it gets till it get .312.
Tap by handcranking the chuck.

I was about to say that I do exactly as Jerry but you made a technical correction so now I'll say that I do exactly like Jerry but I turn the spindle chuck instead of the entire headstock.
