Instructional Materials About Safeties

Does Bob Henning's book "Pro Safeties" cover straight pool safeties? (I am interested in getting better at safeties for other games too though.)

Is the book good?

Is there an accompanying DVD?

If no accompanying DVD, then are there any good instructional DVD's that are dedicated strictly to safeties?

thanks

Why

What is the point of making three different post when you could have asked all three questions in one single post.

I believe it is 9 ball safeties. These can be used in 8 ball sometimes, but straight pool is a different game. I looked at it and felt it would not help me for straight pool. I cannot think of any printed material about straight pool safety play. Maybe somebody here or in the straight pool forum can help. I would also like to find some good material on the subject.

If DVD material is OK for you, you could check out Accu-Stats. I haven't ordered any of these yet, so I don't know if they cover safeties or not and I don't know if the Danny D. one has anything instructional or not. But I have talked to Pat before and he is a nice guy and if you call him at Accu-Stats, I'm sure he could say if they cover safeties.

I bought the Pro-Safeties book at SBE last year. It's geared toward 9B, with a little 8B here and there.

There are well over 100 safeties, and it can get boring if you are just reading through it. But try running through them on the table and it will open up for you. It's ring bound, so it will lie flat on the table. Take advantage of that.

IMO $32 is steep for a collection of diagrams. That's not to say it's devoid of text; just that what little is there doesn't add a lot to the mix. See if you can find a used copy.

The best way I"ve found to practice safeties is to play "caroms". Take two object balls and put one on either side of the head spot and the cue ball on the foot spot to start. The object is to contact both object balls with the cue ball and keep doing that as much as possible. Also try to "gather" the two object balls close together for the next shot. - Then it's time to graduate to "stage 2".

STAGE 2: Do the same practice routine, with this difference - After contacting the two balls with the cue ball, try to make the first ball you contact go around the table (or one rail, etc) and come back and hit the cue ball OR object ball AGAIN.

When you can do "STAGE 2" consistently you will see a huge improvement in your safety game. I have a few more advanced drills for safety play, however, this one I will guarantee improvement. I do STAGE 2 using TOI to make it more interesting, you can make the "STAGE 3" if you choose. ;) Play Well, The Game is the Teacher www.cjwiley.com

Great post CJ, thank you. They say that Efren is so good at kicking out of trouble and kicking safe because of his 3-cushion background. And the practice method you describe is similar, awesome.

Further, thanks for your posts in general. You must be one busy guy, and yet you take a lot of time to post on these forums with very helpful stuff. Thank you very much.

Yes, Efren is actually the best "One Rail Billiards" player in the world and has a high run over over 280. That's the next phase is going at least one rail on every shot, that's why Efren is SO GOOD playing one pocket is his one rail knowledge. I guess I should say "one of the reasons" anyway - he really is a master of all Cue Sport Games. 'The Game is His Teacher' ;)

I think something may have gotten lost in translation. So far as I know, Efren has never competed in the world championships at one-cushion carom billiards. I doubt that he would have any chance against either Caudron or de Bruyn at one cushion, but it would be interesting to see a match.

Has this book /dvd combo been mentioned?

Nick Varner's 55 Safety Play Shots
(part of the pro skill drills series)

This covered pretty much every popular safety I've ever seen, and a few I'd never thought of. They'd be fine in 8b, 9b, and maybe straight pool too. Most of them are focused on locking the other guy to a ball when the opportunity is there, which is nice in any game and prevents simple jump escapes.

Only saw the DVD, didn't get the printed companion book, you probably can get by with the DVD and just practice along at home if you have a table, otherwise maybe memorize a few specific ones you want to practice.

Thanks CreeDo. I looked right past these. I wouldn't get the whole set, so I looked past them (the OCD in me I guess). Why not get just the one I "need"?

thanks again

You might consider contacting Max Eberle. I don't know if he has any specific materials on it, but it would make an interesting video. He has many video lessons and this would be a great addition.

He's got an AZ account and checks in every once in a while, or visit his website www.propoolacademy.com

Try Phil Capelle

Phil Capelle's "Play Your Best Straight Pool" has a good section on safties specific to 14.1. It is still my favorite straight pool book.

Sorry, due to my post count I cannot post links to material.
