IPT schmidt vs Sigel proves what?

I think this undercard match is just what it is a undercard match and before the match and after the match win or lose for either player this match should be left at that.This match could be all hyped up to explode like a firecracker only to be a dud.On one side of this is if Schmidt wins or loses he will be a gentleman about it and if sigel wins he would consider it another world title like beating loree jons was a world title and there was only 2 players. Good thing for him he didnt play Jasmin Ouschan or Allison Fisher. If he loses we may hear there was enough prize money for him. How much are they playing for? Sigel claims to quit playing pool because the prize money was not enough for him so why would he be playing this for the i geuss about $5,000 total prize.Is this enough incentive for us to see the old Sigel or just the constant man of excuses and if he loses maybe he might break his cue again.I would like to see this match race to 500 balls and about $25,000 winner takes all and each player puts up their own cheese for the added pressure.I would also like to see Sigel act like a gentleman win or lose since he represents the IPT and the little scraps that Mr.Trudea is still giving away.I got to see first hand how Sigel was the constant complainer at all the ipt events when he was winning a match or losing a match he mainly complained about the equipment in which from all the understanding i have heard he was completely in charge of every detail from the tables and the tight pockets,the slow cloth,the balls,and the tournament formats.After speaking to quite a few of the players everybody beleived he was also in charge of the matches so he had the easier matches to play.The one thing i never heard anyone complain about was all the money that Mr.trudea handed out except when the ipt delayed payments but made good with all the money payouts and we all know that Sigel couldnt complain since he got 2 extra large free paydays and only played 2 matches and had Loree Jons been playing at all Sigel may have been 0-2 instead of 1-1

A little chest-pounding by winners doesn't bother me at all. It's all part of the "show", something pool needs. Even Toof's histrionics could be looked at as 'entertaining'. Didn't Fats have a positive effect on pool?
 
I agree it should be a race to 500 or so. Guys like Schmidt and Sigel could hit 150 off the break and make it a lopsided match. I'd like to see them both sweat it out.

In the match up - Mike's a threat to run LOTS OF BALLS any time he comes to the table, and believe me, John Schmidt knows that. John is not taking Mike Sigel lightly. Age has not affected Mike's skills half as much as many people would like to believe, so this will be a pretty good match up (unless John glues Mike's ass in the chair from start to finish).

As far as your other comments, Mike is not a bad guy at all - of course he's hard to like sometimes - but give the guy a break. Of course he can be a real jerk at times, so can you, me, and everybody else. Everybody acts as if he's a jerk 24/7. He's not. I'm tired of hearing all of these "Evil Mike" tales. Spend a little time around the guy and get know him a little better than what you see at the tournaments. If you take the time to do that, I'm sure you will see a different side to him. Lately he's been getting the same internet bashing that is usually reserved for Earl and its getting old. If we can't give the legends the respect they deserve, nobody will ever give our sport the respect it deserves. That's just the way it works.
 
Unfortunately for me the live broadcasts are well past my bedtime over in the UK! I have watched some of the matches on-demand afterwards and the quality is good - if not for a poor Internet connection!

Am I right in assuming this is the undercard to Boyes vs Pagulayan?

It would be refreshing to see some straight pool, I will try and catch some of it.

The only time we see straight pool in the UK is at the European Championships - not played much over here.
 
I can't wait to see this match. For Schmidt, I know he wants to beat Mike because he is a pool legend and for Sigel....well, even though it's an exhibition, he HAS to win to be in the spot light ever again.

This will be FUN to watch, if nothing else.

I'm not sure if I agree with Mike getting push-over matches in the IPT.

Every match I watched he played a champion... Engert and then Wu right after (Reno).
 
There will be some good pool played. I won't watch 1 second of it. It has to do with the IPT and I'm out.
 
Schmidt vs Sigel

I believe alot of people are looking forward to seeing this match. Bashing Mr. Sigel is the improper thing to do. No matter what you think of him personnally you should still respect and admire what he has accomplished. After all, how many people/players have matched his accomplishments. Have you ??? I believe this match is good for pool, when negative things are written it just hurts the sport.

your right blackjack! ive played with him for over 35 yrs. and although he can still piss me off with his mouth, i like mike. he has a zest for life , wether it be pool, his family, or fishing, he just is to exubernt in the way he provays it when he talking. his mouth just is ahead of his brain sometimes. but that doesnt make him a bad guy. he is a family man that really went through some bad times when his dad was sick. he is open with his thoughts and feelings if you are a friend. i spent a lot of time fishing with him and he is open to any thing you want to talk about. he even took lesson and tips about fishing for trout and salmon from me!!! but mike is an allright guy in my book. he is just a legend on the pooltable and he knows it!
 
Schmidt vs Sigel proves What? It proves to me that live internet matches that we can all place sweat bets on is the future and I'm loving every minute of it!

Not sure why people bash him. He's without a doubt the most exciting guy to watch if you pair personality with game. Not saying he should beat the top echelon 14.1 players consistently, although he's capable of beating any of them on any day -- he proved that at the World 14.1 the other year--- he went undefeated until the knockout round where he lost by a ball to Harriman (Harriman made a sweet bank to win).

Blackjack, execution aside, how would you rank Sigel in 14.1 knowledge compared to all active players?

I would rate Mike Sigel towards the top. IMO, the top 14.1 players today are

Oliver Ortmann
John Schmidt
Danny Harriman
Thorsten Hohmann
Ralf Souquet
and
Mike Sigel

I would even put Allen Hopkins in there. Look at Allen;s match against Thorsten in last year's World Championship - he had to sit and watch Toastie run over a hundred balls - and he comes back with a pretty good run of his own - COLD.

Mike is a serious threat to win this because it's not a long race. I know John is going to be ready for this one, because in 14.1 Mike operates on a different level than most human beings.

As for age, age is nothing when it comes to straight pool. In 1989 I played Cowboy Jimmy Moore. I ran 102 or 103 balls and played safe on him. The cue ball was glued to the back of the stack of 14 balls, a few of them were nudged when I played safe. The guy calls the 7 in the corner - makes it - splatters the balls everywhere and runs 120 and out. Keep in mind, he was 77 or 78 years old at the time and STILL playing strong. The year before I watched Cowboy beat Keith McCready (on a bar box) in the Heubler Cup 9 ball tournament at the Showboat in Vegas. I never saw Jimmy so excited he went around telling everybody - "I finally beat that damned McCready!" lol

I know what you are saying about Mike. He's a blast to be around and to talk to. His only crime is that he knows his place in history and he's not shy about it.

Of course it doesn't "prove" anything. Any woofing that goes on before the match is just to hype it up. Regardless of what it proves, or doesn't prove, it should still be a fun match to watch.

I'm not a big fan of striaght pool myself, but I can't imagine why anyone who does like the game wouldn't want to see this match. In most sports ledgends of the past can't even think about competing against present day stars. Fans of those sports can only argue about how so-in-so of the past would have fared against so-in-so of today. Pool is such that champions of the past like Sigel can still compete with champions of today.

As for your comment about Mike having been in complete charge of all those things related to the IPT. You may want to check your sources. When the IPT was in its formative stages Mike did have some input about the equipment, but once the ball got rolling it was pretty much KT's baby. At least, this is the way I saw it.

When it was decided to stage the match between Mike and Loree Jon to "kick off" the IPT in grand style KT had a table sent to my pool room for Mike to practice on. I set the table up to IPT "specs" and Mike was there almost on a daily basis preparing for his match with Loree Jon.

It would not be appropriate for me to go into any details, but in defense of Mike, I can tell you that from talking to him on a daily basis and hearing his end of phone conversations with KT, Mike was not "calling the shots" as far as the IPT goes. As with most companies, no matter what level of expertise someone in the company has, the MAN WITH THE MONEY is going to start making the decisions.

Speaking of money, here is something that I doubt many are aware of. The match between Mike and Loree Jon was originally set up to pay the winner $100,000 and the loser $50,000. I was standing next to Mike when he got a call from KT advising him that he (KT) had decided to raise the payouts to $150,000 and $75,000. Why? Because after he (KT) found out how much it was costing him to run a full page ad in USA TODAY promoting the match, " $100,000 and $50,000 just didn't sound like enough".

Mike will forever be assoicated with the IPT, but for those who bash him for that , IMO you are bashing one of the ledgends of the game for nothing more than being in the right place at the right time.

What about Niels Feijen, David?

It's obvious that Europe has by far the largest and strongest field in 14.1. (actually all the Pool games, if you consider the reigning World Champions ;)) and Niels has won the European Championships in 14.1. now four times. He is the reigning champion, and he won it three times in a row (can you believe that?) in 2002-04.

I will say this about Mike Sigel. Most of what people see of him and hear is him just talking cause he can, he has achieved more in pool than 5-10 people put together will ever achieve in pool period.

I spent a week with Mike about 4yrs ago at his Pool Shop in Winter Garden, FL. And just to sit and listen to him about pool is amazing the man knows the game to the point its ridiculous.

And not only can he talk about he can do it. His track record may not be that great when the IPT was up and running but he is a legend of the game.

And like David S. mentioned he can be a jerk and a nice guy, but I guarantee that if anybody on here has accomplished what he has you may or may not talk shit about it all the time but if you choosed too, one thing about it no one will ever be able to take away what you or Mike S. has accomplished on a pool table.

This match honestly can go either way because its a short race and either one is capable of running out the set so yes John has just a good a chance as Mike does at winning this.

But niether one stealing from the other. It would be nice to see a long set maybe the TAR guys can move in on this in the future and set up something between these two champions and have some type of long race Straight pool match between them maybe a race to a 1000 over two-three days or something.

But try and stay positive about what ever happens this is what pool is about bet your money on the rail the player of your choice and enjoy the show, because Mike Sigel wont be here forever and in 60-70 yrs there wont be no John S. so enjoy them while you have the oppurtunity and wish these guys could play everyday.

Just imagine if most here could have seen Willie Mosconi-Minnesota Fats-Jimmy Moore-Irving Cranes play would have been nice right. Point: enjoy this today regardless of the outcome and who talks more shit about what.
