Is .050" Shaft Runout O.K.?

Hey Guys,
I've been receiving so much "Flawed stuff" via the internet..
just about everything I order has something wrong/defective or flawed..(Amazing world out there).
Now, I want to buy a shaft..
I want to do everything I can to be sure I get the Item I bought in the condition it suppose to be , not defective or flawed..
So, I ask if they can check the shaft before they send it to be sure it is straight. (Trying to CMA)
Here's the policy:
.. We roll our shafts prior to shipment and they have to be within .05 for it to clear shipment. Thanks"

This is not about badmouthing a company.. Just what I am going to get for $200+...
I am stupid and dumb, so, I gotta ask,
Can I buy a straight shaft or do I depend on Luck, as my previous attempts to buy things from the internet..?

So, Here's the Question:

Is .050 runout ( almost 1/16"?) on a new shaft acceptable/O.K.?
Tough World, Hard Life..:p
The reason I want to buy a shaft is because I don't think I can make a straight one, besides waiting the years to hang the wood..
But, If they might come with a .050 Runout, mmmm.

Alton, get a 30 year old, old growth shaft from me, almost to size, I know you can finish it out. Laser straight and seasoned too. As for the .o5o run-out, no thanks, for me anyway.

Going cost me an extra to send it back/Insured..
 
Just curious but what type of sharf are you looking for? Something special?
 
I wouldn't be happy about that much on a brand new cue. But If you got a cue with some movement that was older I could say ok I guess.

Honestly if the tip doesn't leave the table it wot alter your shot.

I have heard that story before, Don't want to mention names. But I'll give you 3 guesses, you probably only need 2.

I wasn't going to mention the shaft, because I'm not here to
Talk negatively about the company..
All I thought was,
to get a shaft, with the least amount of a chance of warping,
I wanted a "Laminated" Shaft, thinking they will always stay straight.
( Because they are laminated..:) )

But, if they still can warp, then..
I gotta change my plans..
Maybe make my own...
And then be warped?.:sorry:...:grin-square:
 
I'll sell you a straight shaft for less than $200+ ... Made by mother nature , who , IMHO, is the best at what she does . Why pay more and get less ...;)

If you send it back, they'll just bend it the other way and resend it to you.

I like the hit of a flat laminated shaft but I have pretty much moved away from using them. Maybe I got some bad blanks but I had 25 that I slowly turned over a three year time frame and only 8 of them stayed straight. All the others would not stop moving. Maybe they were made with the wrong type of glue or something.

I also noticed that most of the black dot shafts have considerable wobble in them when spinning between centers.

I got 20 flat laminated dowels about 6 years ago and every one of them stayed straight and when they come back to the shop for a new tip they still spin really straight. I wish I had stocked up on a bunch of them back then.

On a hunch, I made inquiry at Seyberts today when I was there.
I know Alton and I know he deals with Sey. So I asked some questions.
It's possible that one of their sales people took your call.

I should now state that there were at least a couple of inaccuracies provided to you during your conversation (or emails, I don't know which).

First, the stated .050" acceptable row-out was stated incorrectly.
She sincerely apologizes. What she meant to say was .005".
She was only off by a decimal place. Yeah, I know. Only CMs are perfect.

It is Seyberts policy that NO new shaft will ship with more than .005" roll-out. PERIOD.

Secondly, new shafts are NOT rolled on the table to confirm straight.
They have a device consisting of 2 V blocks and a dial indicator to check each and every new shaft. I use this device regularly when I'm selecting shafts. Any shaft in excess of the .005" limit will not ship. Rick Matzke, the store manager, has made this very clear to me.

Now, this is assuming that it was in fact Seyberts that you contacted.
You have graciously exercised discretion in your post by not stating names, so even now I'm not 100% sure. But I asked enough of the right questions and believe I was given enough of the right answers to now have more than a strong suspicion.

Alton is a friend of mine and I have a strong working relationship with Seyberts. If Sey was involved in this, I knew I had to get on top of it and get it rectified quick.

Mistakes can happen. I remember making a couple. But I do understand that, as in this instance, being off by 1 decimal place can have almost the same effect as if it were done by your bank. For this, I apologize. KJ

I just ordered some blanks..:p
And the Undersize Radial Tap..:)
