Is Chalk Complimentary?

I'm a newbie. Today I played with a friend in a pool room. Balls came on a tray with two chalk cubes. I put one cube in my holder. We returned the balls and one cube. When I got home, I realized I still had the cube in my holder. Did I steal the chalk, or is chalk considered a consumable complimentary item?

Thanks.

Rick

No one's going to care. It's typical to return the chalk when you return the balls, but it's so inexpensive that the room won't mind. You'd get some funny looks if you came back to return the chalk.

Not complimentary. Just take it back next time you go to the poolroom. You can buy a dozen of Master chalk pretty cheap if you wanna keep something in your holder.

It's complimentary, that is why whenever I am at the pool hall, I wander around all the tables looking for Kamui chalk to put in my case.

Hehe, just kidding, it's not supposed to be free, but if you didn't do it intentionally it isn't that big of a deal.

It is complimentary for use in that room not free to take home.

It is not very expensive so the room won't really get upset about one cube, but if everyone who came to play took the chalk away, it would get to be a problem.

They should just attach them to the table with little chains like they do pens at the bank.

The owner of a pool room in North Providence, RI once told me he hated pool players because they "expected chalk".

Taking chalk is not the end of the world but I always return chalk as a way of showing my character. If possible I try returning it with more chalk left then when I got it.....even if I have to mis-cue to do it:wink:

I'll tell you a little story. I was sitting at the bar at the pool hall having a beer when all of a sudden I heard a voice say to me, "You are the man".

I looked around and no one was close to me at the time.

A minute or two later and I heard the same voice again, only this time it said, "and you are probably a great pool player too".

I looked at the guy behind the bar and asked him if he had said anything to me. He said no. I told him that I keep hearing voices and they are saying nice things to me.

He said, "oh, I know, its the peanuts, they're Complimentary".

I use Pre Flag. I run it down to half way and leave it on the table. I know lots of other guys that do the same.
No biggy, buy a 12 pack of Masters and I'm sure that at some point, you'll leave a few on the tables for others to use.

The biggest crooks in your country are in Washington and they steal a lot more than a 10 cent piece of chalk. Don't lose any sleep over it, the politicians aren't.

There is a room that I frequent that has a box of used chalk on the counter that they collect out of ball trays and off of rails. You can browse through that chalk and often find something usable. If not, they have a vending machine that sells new Master's chalk at .50 a cube.

I keep a dozen of masters in my case just because some bars we shoot seriously don't have chalk. There's no pool rooms around here so it's all shitty bars

Guys -

Thanks for the comments. I'll take the cube back next time I am at the pool room.

RRich - You asked, "Do you take a glass when you buy a drink?"

No, I don't. I don't consider glasses consumable. When I buy popcorn however, I usually keep the bag. How about you?

And then there are those "considerate" players who leave chalk at the pool hall - on the carpet when they wipe their tip on the floor.

Ah ok. I can't see the bottom of my case and its was only a couple hundred so I'm not particularly concerned.

Since you feel paranoid, maybe watch your back from now on for this french police man.

Last time I bought a gross of Masters blue, it came out to about 15 cents a piece. If you're playing in a poolhall where the owners worry whether you return the chalk or not, then you got bigger equipment issues to worry. If you're worry about karma, give the waitress a bigger tip next time.
