Is cheating apart of pool/sports?

It's all about the hustle....

I talked about this before in another thread and a few comments here made me think back on this shot. Still the best pool movie ever made in my opinion, I simply ask people to look closely at the first shot that Paul Newman shoots in the link below from The Hustler. There is no way that Newman could sink this shot without cheating. He strikes through the cue ball and strikes the stripe ball to sink the 2. I always thought that Fats knew that it was a bad shot and his congratulations to Eddie was tongue in cheek.. But that's neither here nor there. The movie isn't called The Hustler for nothing.

Call it Karma, sowing and reaping or what have you but cheaters eventually get whats coming to them.

When defining cheating - are you talking about messing with the table layout, violating a defined or accepted rule, or sharking?

Based on over 50 years of playing experience, I have established the following standards of diligence when competing:

1. If the opponent is not a friend, watch every action with close attention, expecting violations.
2. On the table, there are no friends.

When you're competing - keep your attention on the game. The very fact you are watching will force almost all opponents onto their best behavior.

And if you notice cheating at another table - keep your nose out of it. But do remember what happened, since someone could do it to you. (Some of the best and cheapest ways to learn is by watching another person's experiences.)

Where is Lance Armstrong when we need him? He'd be able to help sort this out. Of course we could also contact Marion Jones for some advice. Cheating to win is not winning at all it just proves your a loser at heart. Lance and Marion are both losers that tried to be winners by cheating.. Cheating is for losers!

Cheaters, liars and thievery NEVER diminish once they are set in motion....unless you get caught during a learning curve. Those curve balls really hurt if they hit ya :poke:where it counts. :bash:

Bill; I have a feeling you've witnessed a few of those learning curves. ;)

I know people who will CHEAT over a Game of Pool were the win, don't even get the WINNER a Beer, or Pocket Change. Winning is so important to these people they will do anything to Win. It is all about beating their chests, and saying they were he winner.

The same people recently dropped out of a League two weeks in to the League Play. There excuse was they are Snowbirds, the League went past their time to return to where they go in the heat of summer. Others would have stepped in to finish the League as alternates.

Real reason I suspect was they had NO CHANCE of Finishing First in the League, and Quit because they could not win.

Plus many more that got caught, how about all the ones that didnt get caught.

People can say what they want about Canseco, atlease he had the balls to admitt he did wrong, and if not for him this thing still mite be hush-hush!

How about a list

Make a list of ALL the ways to cheat in billiard games?

I am just going to vent and let everyone voice there opinion. I was able to witness someone flat out cheat while I was playing in a tournament. I dont want to get into how he/she cheated or whether it was right or wrong. It was flat out wrong and it was a disgusting move to gain a huge advantage.
Is this what pool/sports has come too? Who can get away with the most? We can probably name a move in just about any sport.. the flop (nba), framing a pitch (baseball), ect, ect, ect.

Your right there Richie. I read the book by Jose and he made some excellent and true comments. When he first started using steroids they were not illegal and he became convinced they were another way to become a stronger player. He never thought he was cheating and in fact he was not due to the fact that there were no rules against it. Then he took the risk of coming clean and exposing others after it was made illegal and the rest is history. It will be very interesting to see what happens to the rest of Lance's teammates that were obviously cheating as well. Floyd Landis also cheated but I believe may stand to financially as the whistle blower in Lance's case.

Never ends

I played a guy for the "hot seat" in a tournament a couple of months ago. Race to 4 in 8 ball. In the 1st game he sits on the table to make a shot and both feet leave the floor. I am telling him he has to keep a foot on the floor and after the shot he said he had one foot on the floor. I tell him we both know his feet were off the floor. My wife was 10 feet away an easily heard me. The person running the tournament and guy talking to her said they did not hear me and they were about 6' away. Calcuta for 2nd place was $1,500.00 and all mine if I won. So the guy wins the first game because he cheated. I won the next 4 and the cheater ended up in 3rd place. He is what he is and I doubt he will change. After it happened I kept telling my self to move past it and shoot good. Pool is a hobby to me. I don't "gamble" for money, but have no problem making money in a tournament. One of the guys I played went to the bath room on me a couple of times a match, go figure. I was lucky to beat him and I think he beat himself between the drinks and bathroom breaks. If some one has to cheat to win they are a cheater, nothing will change that.

It was done to show a good shot, don't think they set it up with the thought of it being a "cheat" that the inmovie characters would have tried. I have not seen a single episode of "cheating" in The Hustler, just the regular hide your true speed stuff that pool players do. Which I don't like, but it's not technically "cheating".

That shot from The Hustler is definitely a cheat - it's a foul, and it's intentional. I don't know how it wouldn't be a cheat.

I always wondered why they had Fats say "good shot" there too. Maybe they were playing it like even Fats didn't know it was a cheat shot?

It's a bad hit in real life, in the movie they just set it up as a shot. Different things. I'm sure the science forums do not complain about how Superman should not be able to reverse time by flying around the Earth opposite of it's spin.
