Is Earl a good choice for the Mosconi Cup?

The fan's get pretty rowdy, so do the players. It could get ugly, the way Earl chirps at the crowd.
I'm not sure about it? Maybe he will feed off of the crowd, or implode,it depends. Karl

If Earl can keep his emotions under control he will be a very dangerous opponent for the European team, but if he implodes who knows how it will turn out. With Mika being the 5th European team member they just added a very strong player who doesn't have the issues Earl has displayed in the past. I hope the US team plays as well as they can and if they do it will still be a battle against the European team. It's going to be a great match and hopefully team USA will come out on top. The US team is about as strong as we have to offer and I wish the team the best of rolls.

This is exactly why I think Corey Deuel was a much better choice. NEARLY exactly same up side, with a much, MUCH better down side. You know what the team will get with Corey. Absolutely no idea if Dr. Jeckyl or Mr. Hyde is going to show up for the cup now.

Just my humble opinion....

He's great for ratings :) I too worry about him imploding as we've all seen him due. I would actually be curious to compare his MC statics side by side with other American team members both past and present. Maybe he's the most successful MC team member, who knows? I'd sure like the opportunity to analyze it though if someone wanted to take the time and compile the data

this is all I got so far, from inside pool mag report,
‘The Pearl’ has enjoyed and endured a love/hate relationship with the event ever since his winning debut in 1996, but his 65% win percentage over 13 Mosconi Cups is still a record for the competition. Strickland has been on the winning team on no less than nine occasions and following his recent win at Turning Stone, there is a popular feeling that he is playing as good as he ever has.

Is Earl a good choice for the Mosconi Cup? NO!

Earl is a GREAT choice!

Earl's participation should be mandatory for all future cups until he shows a decline in skill level, which he has not.

His "give back" to the pool community is legendary. The Earl Strickland book of Pool Etiquette is a classic. His treatise on Fan Interaction, and his best selling series of Cheering For Dummies are must reads for any serious poolplayer.

He has the look, he wears the bling (and more) and while others "grind" their chalk he "swirls" it. (chicks love it when you swirl it)

Enough second guessing, fellow sweathogs, jump on board the E Train Bandwagon, this years Mosconi Cup Team is set and the USA is on track for victory.

^^^ This. People worry too much about Earl. He's not only a good choice for the American team, he's the best choice, imo.

People seem to have selective opinions on emotional players. Yes, Earl wears his heart on his sleeve and his emotions can affect his quality of play.

The exact same can be said about Mika. Now, Mika doesn't get out of line in an over-the-top way like Earl. However, like Earl, Mika has been known to let his emotions get the best of him.... sighing, huffing and puffing, raking balls mid-game, etc.

That's NOT a knock on Mika--- he's a SUPER player and a really nice guy. Being emotional only means you're human and you can't contain your feelings when shit rolls bad. That said, I always thought a moniker like "Iceman" wasn't the best descriptor for Mika because it implies he's emotionless and machine-like during play - and he's not. They should call him the Fire-Starter or something... go the opposite direction.

This will be a great MC, for sure.

Implode, explode, or smiling, Earl is great. Truly the man I would want shooting any shot that my life depended on. I wish I had 1% of his natural talent, and half his skill at pool.

Love him, hate him, RESPECT him...

The old saying (I'm Back) will shine at the Mosconi Cup. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Earl gets MVP this year.

Great choice....you never know WTH will happen, but you do know it'll be entertaining.:eek:

For whatever reason, mosconi events are the loudest I've ever seen. Always filled with high energy, cheering, and emotion. Do we need earl for that? Hell yeah!

Consider the fact that we are underdogs in this match, we need an upset. That makes me want Earl even more. The euros may dislike him more than any other US player. Risky, but that is a chance we will have to take. Earls game, high energy, and entertainment value: Too much to pass up.

Earl is old, but old = experience. He's been at a zillion of these and that's huge when it comes to fading
the pressure. It's not like he's so old he can't run a rack of 9 ball anymore. It will boil down to who
handles the pressure best. Meltdowns or not, Earl can do that... probably better than some of the younger players.
