just got my table installed, and ive been breaking down my cue everytime im done shooting and back into the case. Can i just leave it put together and laying on the table? Put together and in a wall rack? Its an old stick so it cured a long time ago, the basement isnt hot or humid.......what say ye

i have been doing this for years and never had a problem though im sure some will disagree.

IMO temperature changes and humidity are the real problems. I wouldn't leave my cue leaning against a wall though, as the weight of it on itself can warp it. Given a choice of on a rack (which shouldn't bother it) or flat on the table, I'd tuck it under the rail and leave it without worry so long as it is in a neutral climate.

I had cue sticks assembled on racks in our poolroom for sale for months in an A/C environment and they never warped.

Some people break their sticks down, put them in the case and throw them in the trunk of their car. Thats much worse to do.

Wall Rack

I don't know about leaving it on the table, but I heard somewhere long ago that the best place for a cue is upright in a wall rack that is on an interior wall, not an exterior wall because the temperature isn't as constant. I keep mine in a wall rack or in the case about 90% of the time. The only time I leave it on the table is if I am going to leave for a couple of minutes then come back and shoot.

I am interested to see the difference in opinions though.

hmm

Well, in general, it is always better to leave the stick vertical. However, it just depends on how long it sits there. Even though the stick may be older, after a good enough time of laying on the table, gravity may take it's toll.

I will agree that for extended times upright is the best bet. I was saying I'd not worry if it were used all the time.

The other thing about on a table in a warm or extra cold environment over a long period is the temp of the wood on top and bottom can differ and cause a problem. But if its in the house and temp controlled, I don't think between uses is a problem.

i have left my cue out on my table at home, and once my mom-my next door neighbor at the time caame over to my house to show her friends. I walked behind them, when i heard the pool table and there was a banger, using my ivory point SouthWest, I stopped that in 2 seconds and thankfully I was there, after that, I awalys put my cue away and put the case in a spot no one can see it, i leave a couple house cues out and thats it. unless you hate your cue, put it away when your done.

On the table

I think it would be okay unless:

1) Someone else could come along and grab your cue to use, and possibly damage it.
2) Someone else could walk by and decide to roll a ball hard around the table and scar your cue when it hit it. (I had this happen at a Pool room once)
3) If you have kids, I would not.

wood is wood

i don't see where u would ever have a problem.any warping that u would get from having it sitting on your pool table at your home in a controlled enviorment should i say not be a problem.its things like leaving your cue in your vehicle all day cold/hot either or will have an effect on not only the wood but glues, linens, leathers (especially tips).i have found weather can affect a tips play considerable.pretty much what i'm saying a case doesn't keep your cue straight or away from changing elements.it keeps it from getting banged around.

Me too.

Dave, now feeling like one of those people on that list of typical responses to a thread .... sooooo ..... :

- my Falcon has been on my table for 3 years, no problems (it was 5 years old when I got it)

- my McDermott is now in a case, but spent about 8 years on the table, it's still straight

Some day I'll have to get the cue off the table and play some :D

i was down at a pool hall once, went down to pick up a cue. i laid my $600 Nova Custom down next to the table where i was shooting with my new cue. turned around, and the Nova was gone! i finally saw a younger gentleman, ball cap on backwards, at an adjacent table, shooting with it. i told him it was my cue and if he wanted to try a few shots he should have asked. i told him all this politely, but i think he could tell by my demeanor i was quite honked.

There's your answer.

A custom pool cue is a work of art and a precision tool. As such it deserves great respect.

Put it in a case or in a wall rack.

Put It Up

In most instances it won't be a problem but depending on your shaft taper it could be. If you roll your shaft and see daylight under it then if you leave it on your table for extended periods of time gravity is pushing the unsupported area of the shaft toward the table. You will eventually see a wobble in the shaft.

How about what it may do to your cloth? I would guess that over time, you might develop a groove where you're always leaving your stick resting.

I dunno. Maybe I'm crazy.

I took the black plastic hanger from some old cue stick racks and put them in various places around the room where people often rest a cue. So there is no reason not to stand it up against the wall.

I placed a few other hangers in out of the way places and they "decorate" the room. I get two for the price of one. Cues are always stood up and they make the room look nicer.

I don't think warping is a problem, but, you can pick up alot of extra chalk dust on the wrap. As stated, unauthorized use can lead to headaches as well. If it is in a private room, this is minimized. Personally, I put my cues in the case when I'm through playing.

Nothing to worry about.

Yep, you are. :) Just kidding man. I don't think you have anything to worry about. We have a wall rack that we use but sometimes we just leave them on the table. Never had a problem. We have no kids so don't have to worry about that. Have fun with your new table.

yeah no kids here, private room so there shouldnt be any problems. Although i definitely see the problem with unauthorized use. A buddy of mine came over and i was eating supper, told him to go down and check out my pool room. I hear balls clicking and i go down and hes using my cue. Hes not a total banger but hes close lol, Im going to make some kind of wallrack or a corner cue holder i think in the near future, still putting it all together. The main reason i wanted to keep the cue together is it uses an interference fit on the joint, and ive been told over time that is going to wear down.......so if i run down to practice 4 or 5 times a night, thats that much more wear and tear on the joint.
