Is it worth spending 40$ to repair a 100$ cue? (and a few other questions)

Hey,

I have recently returned to pool playing after being gone for close to 16 years. Not to long ago i decided to pick up another cue to replace my 30 year old one... and at the time i thought i was getting a good deal from the local shop (read, i got gypped)

The owner talked me into buying a used Cuetec, for what i thought was a good price (right at 100 after taxes) ... i later found out that was close to the normal retail for the cue ... and then a few nights ago i found out the reason it was being sold ... the previous owner cross-threaded the shaft a bunch of times so now the threads in the plastic peice are all butchered up ... (it will go together if done real slowly and takes a few min) ...

the only prices i am getting for getting it fixed are in the 25 to 40 range .. (a new shaft is only 56) ...

at the same time though i am considering just ditching this cue while i can ... and picking up two McDermotts (Alpha II's i beleive they are, basic look solid natural wood finish with no inlays)

I know from reading this forum over the past few weeks that most everyone is going to talk down on the cuetec, i didn't notice anything bad about it when playing .. other then it felt different (i grew up used to normal wood sticks not ones coated) ...

the McDermott's are from an authorized dealer, so they would have the lifetime warrenty on them ... comes up to around 180 for both cues ... my only real issue with them is figuring out how to dress the tip for the first time .. never had to do that ...

cuetec smootech

You cannot go wrong with a McDermott, you can go wrong with a Cuetec.. As a wise man once said..." you can spray a pig with perfume, but it's still a pig"

just my wooden nickels worth.

those are the two McDermotts i am looking at ...

i have never played with one of course ... and the local shop doesn't carry them (mostly only cuetec stuff) ...

i guess mostly i am just apprehensive about ordering them... the shop i would be getting them from though would let me return if i am not happy with them ...

as for the cuetec cue ... i will prob try to sell it off to someone else ... i never had a problem with it getting sticky ... but my thought was 'fiberglass' needs auto polish on it .. and it worked out pretty good ...

An additional benefit to getting away from a Cuetec is that they tend to be pretty butt heavy. Mcdermott, for instance w/ respect to a good quality, low price production cue, has a more forward balance. Most of the better cues, by top quality makers, will have a balance point in the 19" to 19 1/2" from the butt range.

i noticed that on it ... i had to pull all of the weights out of the butt .. just to get the balance point moved a few inches in front of my hand ...

Friend just spend $5,800.00 on Nuro surgury on her DOG, let face it if you love a Dog, or that Cue. $40.00 is nothing.

i would spend that much on one of my dogs as well .. but i do not have that kind of attachment to this cue ... only played with the cue for about 4 or 5 weeks now ... and it never has felt quite right for me.

You couldn't feel this when you bought it? DId you approach the seller about this?

I would not put anymore into that cue and I would never buy anything from that seller again.

McDermott

If you are thinking about getting lower priced McDermotts anyway, check eBay for P models. They usually go for about the same price as the low end plain janers, but look a bit better, and everyone doesn't have one. The link below is one that I've seen go for right around the $200 range, and the seller IS an authorized McDermott dealer - so, full warranty....just a thought.

at the time no i did not notice it ... started playing with it as soon as i bought it ... later that night i noticed it was screwed together tightly ... got it loose and put it in the case ... next time i played it went together okay, but was tight coming apart ... so i looked into the threaded part to see the threads had been messed up several times ... and what looks like they were heated up and it screwed back together to try to reform them? ...

i asked the person i got it from (runs a 'small' shop at the local pool hall that is unlocked when you need something) ... his response to it was... "its a used stick" and he walked off ... at that point in time i wanted to place the stick in a certain location of his ... but i decided i just wouldn't deal with him again and spread the word heh ...

hmmm will look for the 'P' branded ones ... i don't really care to much about the fancy inlays and such tho...

the line that has P in the name of the cue are usually made from older (C and D series) forearms - meaning sharp points. Usually a limited run, and for some reason, good priced....by older, I mean, NEW - old stock (not used in cues at the time they were made - mostly from the 80's). I woulda given you a great deal one mine, but it is already gone. sorry.

This is the eBayer I bought it from...he seems to have very good deals from time to time, but right now only has a Joss in the lower price range

good luck with the search....

I can retap the Cuetec for $5. Hell, just pay S+H and I'll do it for free. Its always good to have too many cues.

and while Ryan's got it spend a few $'s to have a break tip put on it!!will be a great breaker

that may be the only way I would hold onto that cue...its actually a pretty damn good idea, but youd get more feel out of playing with a lincoln log then a cuetec.

Good luck!

a cuetec isn't worth 20 bucks to fix. you're better off buying another cue

lucasi or fury. they'll play better than any cuetec you'll run into. hell you can get a great deal on a used joss if you can find one. they usually sell for around 100-150 and they'll still play real well

thats not a bad idea ... it already has a tip on it that is as hard as a rock .. and almost has a plastic feel to it ... had thought about just reshaping the tip some to break with it ...
