Is the DCC out of control?

I have been there twice and it's pool heaven. But is it getting out of control with all the activities going on? The main events, the action rooms, league tournaments, carom tournaments, straight pool challenge, one pocket challenge, ten ball challenge, featured action matchups, what else????

What more can they cram into nine days? Does anyone want to see the DCC expand to a month - or twelve :-)

I am totally jonesing because I can't be there and am totally jealous of all of you that are going to be there!!!!

Have fun even though you WILL NOT be able to see everything.

Good post John......For people like me, I think the best days of the Derby are over.

I like to play 9-ball and 1-pocket and I love the gambling aspect of the game. The first couple of years of the Derby, that's what it was all about. Good pool and gambling. You didn't have to walk across the street to see a bar table matchup. And you didn't have tons of people who were there for something besides watching gambling, 9-ball, 1-pocket, and bank pool.

To me when they moved the bar tables across the street was the first sign that the tournament had outgrown itself.

Next, you couldn't watch gambling matches in the tournament room. There was a tight little "action room" that was a$$ cheek to a$$ cheek, and you couldn't see anything but money matches on 1 table. I remember the first or second year I was there, when I arrived around 2 am, I walked into the tournament room and sat down. There were 3 or 4 tables in a line. On one table, Tony Watson was playing Eric Durbin for $40,000 (posted on the light). On the next table down, Alex Pagulyan was playing 1-pocket for $1200 a game, and on the table below that, Cliff Joyner was playing someone a set of 1-pocket for 30,000.

Now with all the "high runs" and challenges and league stuff and every discipline known to man there, it's just too crazy.

The place certainly has a much different feel than it did 8 years ago. Before I get flamed, I know that it is still the greatest show on Earth for pool players. And the promotors have done an outstanding job each year. But I do see John's point that the tournament has outgrown or morphed into something more than what it started out to be.

(at least there are NO Eskimos tying up all the tables..... imo) :)imo

I think midgets are cute...I want to buy one and wear it around my neck on a necklace....

Do Eskimos (Natives if you live in Alaska, I lived there 5yrs) play pool? I thought the only thing they did was come in from the bush and find the nearest bar and get drunk

Sorry if I offended any drunk Eskimos :frown:

Didnt Willie Nelson sing a song....To all the Drunk Eskimos i've loved before :scratchhead:

I wasn't aware of any league segments to the derby mentioned here, BCAPL I would imagine?

I talked to Greg last year and he said he wanted it to be like a three ringed circus. He said if you can see it all, he feels like he hasn't succeeded.

John, I know there is more than a bit of tongue-in-cheek to your post, but I have often thought the same thing.

Basically: too many players and events (they never cut off the entries) and the advertised start time for the 1pocket is often delayed by hours. Then there is the "Black Box" draw. I hate that. And then the tables that lay fallow after tournament matches for so long that things just get drawn out and gummed up more.

So yes, there are problems and maybe too many new events.

But basically and overall, I think it's all a good thing. (It's just a bad table to player ratio.) Certainly one thing it does is to ensure there is something for everyone at the DCC and no two people have the same DCC experience.

Me? I have no idea what I'd do now if not for Bob's 14.1 challenge. I can watch that for hours... usually while waiting for the 1pocket draw :-)

Who was Cliff playing and who won?

My synopsis - Better venue! Many more choices of places to eat, including mutiple snack bars, an excellent buffet, two coffee shops etc. Better prices too!

You do not even have to walk thru the casino to get to the tournament area. In fact you don't have to visit the casino at all, it's kind of out of the way. Great viewing for spectators with a very cool balcony overhead. Great TV table arena as well.

Well run tournament, with a better system for letting players know when they play. So far a good time frame on the matches, and more than enough tables (56) to handle the 398 player Bank Pool Field. One Pocket starts today.

Large crowds of people already, but more room to maneuver. Only three main events, plus a 9-Ball mini tourney and the Fatboy Challenge. The Straight Pool Challenge and the One Pocket Challenge start later in the week. One more mini (Banks) to be played.

Everything appears to be running smoothly. Much nicer hotel with a very friendly and helpful staff.

With all that, why not a Ladies Event? That is what is missing for me, if they ever added one, then I might I might finally make it there!

If they had a chick event, I would DEFINATELY be there.

Guess its just a matter of personal preference. The more variety the better IMO. Why not russian pyramids, snooker and any other disciplines if there is room and players to play in it?

League Stuff...

They aren't having any APA tournaments like they have in the past so that should help the turn out of spectators, or maybe it'll hurt it I don't know. But, I went the first day of the 9 ball banks and there was a pretty good crowd, I can't imaging what it's going to be like once all the 9 ballers get there that don't typically play in banks, and 1pocket. I'd say by the end of the week it might start feeling a little crowded.

To answer your question NO!!!!!! Not by a long shot is it out of control. It is what it is and that is great organized excitment. This is my second DCC and I love it just as much as the first. I never sleep when I am there I just go from room to room and sweat. I was afraid that by having it at the Casino a wheel barrow full of money would be going out the action rooms but it did not. The Casino gambling is for the most part an after thought. This is the first time that I was there to watch Bank pool contest and was not disappointed. DCC has something for all pool players. I am living in Atlanta and no one plays Banks at any of the pool rooms. Steve Moore does not even pratice Banks here. Now I am from Chicago where Banks and One Pocket is King so there were a ton of MidWesterners on hand for this. There were some guy sitting behind me talking and one said that he could not understand how anyone could like Bank pool it was not something that he could relate to so obviously that was not his game. I love watching it but it would not be my game of choice to gamble on. I felt the same way he did about OnePocket 3 years ago so there you go. DCC has something for everyone. The gamblers apperance in the tournament room was not that much apparent because gamblers are gamblers so they like to hang out in The Action Rooms that there thing. The Casino was a great idea because it gave you options so now you got pool and all of its games plus poker if you want...blackjack if you want... craps if you want. In closing as a side note TAR and FATBOY are the greatest thing that could have happened to the game that we all love here. Thank you.
