How did Spidey, DTL and Sloppy get removed from English's advertised ignore list?
I hope I never am.
I hope I never am.
I can tell that you are not going to agree with me on this, so I'll tell you something you'll hate even more: There is actually a 3 cushion system, using fractions and tip positions to give accurate 3 cushion hits, that is increasingly being utilized by great players. I suppose you think that is contrived nonsense as well. I was actually taught by an older carom player when I started out. He taught me spin by first showing the speed he was using. Then shooting the ball straight up and down the table at that speed with a certain tip offset and going to the corner he defined that as one tip. I've built my knowledge of spin reactions upon that one minute lesson. I didn't think it was worthless then, and I certainly don't now. That one tip definition is accurate, because it changes with the table conditions, even silly ones like the new superball cushions. Which means that I can shoot the shot, knowing I need one tip of english on any table, so long as I've calibrated what that means.
The result is what I'm after, so that's what I base my calculations on, not what some guy has defined as a tip. The same with travel length. That is what I want, so that is what I measure/train for. It's convenient to use table lengths, so that's what I use. I don't want to tell people they need a radar gun, a protractor or a calculator. You don't get to do that in a game anyway. Use the things you have: Your cue, the table/diamonds, the tip diameter and of course your memory.

Oh, and I forgot: The PAT drill has 4 speeds, (each speed a length of the table). In this video you see a close approximation of the four speeds:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_D4rFspOVE
Please stop with perpetuating these useless myths. Just stick with what people understand. Hit it High. Put low left on that shot. We all know there's really only 8 tip placements. Hi, extra hi. Lo, extra lo (sometimes really lo) Right, Left and A Bunch of Right or Left.
End of story, so just quit it!!
As many others have said, this is a coaching question and the only people you really have to coach on this are lower level players.
I use lag speed as my base line as most of my 2-4 APA players know lag speed. It's the rare shot that requires more than 150% of lag speed. So mostly I just tell them something a little more or a little less than lag speed. and that gets the job done for low APA players.
When certain safety shots require very little speed - a diamond or 2 (and amateurs have a terrible time hitting super soft) I tell them to bridge as close to the cue ball as possible - 1 or 2 inches and then hit soft.
No one has problem hitting hard. If it takes a hard hit, I just say "hit it hard and make sure you stay down on your shot". You can't coach more precisely than that with low APA players.
In an ideal world, league players would drill 1 diamond hits, 3 diamond hits, 1 table hits, 1.5 table hits etc and know what each feels like. And in my experience with National APA teams, the low handicap players have learned this.
If you need to talk to your 5+ APA players about speed this precisely, then they're not really 5+
This is an important day on AZB. Scott Lee..one of the best contributors to pool, a true professional instructor, an ambassador to the game has made ENGLISH' "Ignore List". I applaud and commend Scott for what ever it took to get there. There is a certain reward and prestige to hold that position. I think it would be a good gesture of ENGLISH to write next to Scotts name..S.L. Mr. SPF.
Scott...congrats. This is a golden moment. We are proud of you. We raise a glass.
Frank...I'm just amazed! All it finally took was for me to point out to Wilson that all English does is post nonsense and create drama...and BOOM, there I was...finally on Rick's "list"! LOL I was beginning to feel slighted!. Of course Rick will never understand the SPF system, nor have any idea of how we gauge and teach speed control. He's already proven that he doesn't know how our system works, as he describes it completely incorrectly, trying to compare it to the PAT tests, which are not the same...somewhat similar, but not the same. No doubt he will now post that he wants a complete detailed explanation on SPF speeds.

I don't know if you are being facetious or not...
but there is an 'extreme' amount more than just 8 tip placements.
I'd say that there are at least 3 or 4 times 360 tip placements that are not center ball & probably more if one considers a tip as a 3 mm circle.
Best Wishes for You & Yours,
Rick
minds are closed & locked in on the one thing that they are selling or have bought & they have a blind eye to ALL other things that actually do compare & might make more common sense than what they or others have contrived.
When one lacks the logic or rationale to support their position they instead 'attack the messenger' of the other position.
Nobody is attacking you. Simply having an intelligent conversation with Mr Broken Record.
You go on and on and go on and on and go on and on and go on and on and go on and on and go on and on and go on and on and go on and on and ....know what I'm sayin'
How many posters does it take to keep up with you. If 3 people call you a horse buy a saddle would ya and some oats.I have an idea... why don't YOU... TELL me that the sky is not blue.
You, Scott & Tony have 57 posts in this thread to my 59. You have 31.
This post of mine is in RESPONSE to YOUR post.
That is what a conversational discussion can be.
YOU post... I respond.
Can you wrap your mind around that concept? I doubt it, as you seem to not even realize the difference between supporting your position & the 'attack the messenger' tactic. Support you position with other than just telling me "it works", etc. & convince me of your position... instead of ALL of the personal insulting 'attacks'. The thing is that I & others know why you & others resort to THAT TACTIC.
Little doubt one of you will point out that in takes 3 of you to equal my posts. but will fail to mention that I have been in conversations with others too.
Best Wishes for All.
When two things are different, that is what one can do... compare.
But some can not seem to do that, make comparisons, because their minds are closed & locked in on the one thing that they are selling or have bought & they have a blind eye to ALL other things that actually do compare & might make more common sense than what they or others have contrived.
If Jimmy Reid says that the only thing that he can not teach is speed control, I doubt that anyone else can teach it either.
One can call something that they teach 'speed control'...
but the phrase used in the TWO separate contexts are not being used the same & they certainly do NOT mean anywhere near the same thing.
Best Wishes for All.
