Is there an established system for discussing stroke speed?

How did Spidey, DTL and Sloppy get removed from English's advertised ignore list?

I hope I never am.

I can tell that you are not going to agree with me on this, so I'll tell you something you'll hate even more: There is actually a 3 cushion system, using fractions and tip positions to give accurate 3 cushion hits, that is increasingly being utilized by great players. I suppose you think that is contrived nonsense as well. I was actually taught by an older carom player when I started out. He taught me spin by first showing the speed he was using. Then shooting the ball straight up and down the table at that speed with a certain tip offset and going to the corner he defined that as one tip. I've built my knowledge of spin reactions upon that one minute lesson. I didn't think it was worthless then, and I certainly don't now. That one tip definition is accurate, because it changes with the table conditions, even silly ones like the new superball cushions. Which means that I can shoot the shot, knowing I need one tip of english on any table, so long as I've calibrated what that means.

The result is what I'm after, so that's what I base my calculations on, not what some guy has defined as a tip. The same with travel length. That is what I want, so that is what I measure/train for. It's convenient to use table lengths, so that's what I use. I don't want to tell people they need a radar gun, a protractor or a calculator. You don't get to do that in a game anyway. Use the things you have: Your cue, the table/diamonds, the tip diameter and of course your memory.

I don't "hate" any of that & I would agree with you in that scenario.

I do not think that that is what the topic is. The OP used the word "established". Yes there are "established" means & I or others may establish another one tomorrow. I am fairly sure that he meant a universally established means.

That is not in place & probably NEVER will be.

I think we have determined that it is not so much the use of designated distances that is my issue, but if the designated distances are of a 1 to 1 ratio then we need an arm speed number that is not definitive because of the different table conditions & table sizes.

As you said, that will need to be calibrated so as to yield the desired gauged outcomes. Does one do that every time by hitting all 10 or more.

Why not just say hit it one(1) table length or 2 table lengths, or 1.5 table lengths?

I can tell a quarterback to throw a ball 40 yards & he can do it without ever having assigned any numbers to his arm speeds to do so.

An outfielder can be catching a fly ball & while the ball is still in the air & before he catches it, a base can be called out & he can throw the ball to that base even though they are all different distances from where he is throwing & he does NOT assign any numbers of different arm speeds to accomplish that.

A golfer can putt a ball different distances but never assigns a number to the speed that he or she 'swings' the putter.

I guess you are correct & I said it earlier that we will just have to be in disagreement on how best to communicate an actual speed to another.

I & others can do it by a visual reference not knowing if the shooter has ever done any drills or whatever. I can point to the path & stopping point & then trust the shooter to employ whatever his subconscious mind will use to attempt to reach that outcome. They may or may not be successful but they will have had a repetition from which to learn other then applying a numbered arm speed that may be too much or too little if not adjusted for something in between the designations.

Some will paint art & some will try to paint by numbers.

Best Wishes.

Please stop with perpetuating these useless myths. Just stick with what people understand. Hit it High. Put low left on that shot. We all know there's really only 8 tip placements. Hi, extra hi. Lo, extra lo (sometimes really lo) Right, Left and A Bunch of Right or Left.

End of story, so just quit it!!

This is an important day on AZB. Scott Lee..one of the best contributors to pool, a true professional instructor, an ambassador to the game has made ENGLISH' "Ignore List". I applaud and commend Scott for what ever it took to get there. There is a certain reward and prestige to hold that position. I think it would be a good gesture of ENGLISH to write next to Scotts name..S.L. Mr. SPF.
Scott...congrats. This is a golden moment. We are proud of you. We raise a glass.

This video is essentially how I teach speed control, adding in a couple of other factors for very slow speeds and faster speeds. I didn't know this was a PAT drill.

This is quite different from the SPF technique that was mentioned earlier although I am sure that SPF techniques in speed control help some people to obtain better speed control.

It is up to each man to work out their own salvation.

JoeyA

Oh, and I forgot: The PAT drill has 4 speeds, (each speed a length of the table). In this video you see a close approximation of the four speeds:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_D4rFspOVE

As many others have said, this is a coaching question and the only people you really have to coach on this are lower level players.

I use lag speed as my base line as most of my 2-4 APA players know lag speed. It's the rare shot that requires more than 150% of lag speed. So mostly I just tell them something a little more or a little less than lag speed. and that gets the job done for low APA players.

When certain safety shots require very little speed - a diamond or 2 (and amateurs have a terrible time hitting super soft) I tell them to bridge as close to the cue ball as possible - 1 or 2 inches and then hit soft.

No one has problem hitting hard. If it takes a hard hit, I just say "hit it hard and make sure you stay down on your shot". You can't coach more precisely than that with low APA players.

In an ideal world, league players would drill 1 diamond hits, 3 diamond hits, 1 table hits, 1.5 table hits etc and know what each feels like. And in my experience with National APA teams, the low handicap players have learned this.

If you need to talk to your 5+ APA players about speed this precisely, then they're not really 5+

I don't know if you are being facetious or not...

but there is an 'extreme' amount more than just 8 tip placements.

I'd say that there are at least 3 or 4 times 360 tip placements that are not center ball & probably more if one considers a tip as a 3 mm circle.

Best Wishes for You & Yours,
Rick

That seems to be a practical application.

I surmise when you say it is rare for a shot to require more than 150% of lag speed that you are referring to the lower level payers that are not using english & 2,3, & 4 rails for position off of a full hit cut or bank shot.

Frank...I'm just amazed! All it finally took was for me to point out to Wilson that all English does is post nonsense and create drama...and BOOM, there I was...finally on Rick's "list"! LOL I was beginning to feel slighted!. Of course Rick will never understand the SPF system, nor have any idea of how we gauge and teach speed control. He's already proven that he doesn't know how our system works, as he describes it completely incorrectly, trying to compare it to the PAT tests, which are not the same...somewhat similar, but not the same. No doubt he will now post that he wants a complete detailed explanation on SPF speeds.

3 types of pool players in the world
Those that know what they're doing
Those that want to learn
The ENGLISH's that have no idea what they are talking about or doing, enjoy giving advice and instructions and will argue until the end of time.

Does he give a hoot about SPF...he does not have the guts to look into. Most likely would not be interested if you gave him a free lesson. He will do his best to prove you are wrong. I wonder if he is a shower curtain ring salesman. Del English.

No, you don't have a sense of humor regardless of what you say.

When two things are different, that is what one can do... compare.

But some can not seem to do that, make comparisons, because their minds are closed & locked in on the one thing that they are selling or have bought & they have a blind eye to ALL other things that actually do compare & might make more common sense than what they or others have contrived.

If Jimmy Reid says that the only thing that he can not teach is speed control, I doubt that anyone else can teach it either.

One can call something that they teach 'speed control'...

but the phrase used in the TWO separate contexts are not being used the same & they certainly do NOT mean anywhere near the same thing.

Best Wishes for All.

So..it's all about selling scrap iron, books and BS huh. Blind??? I hope you never pilot a cruise ship. Here's your logo...this conversation died many moons ago. Here...sing to Michael Jacksons song.... :deadhorse::deadhorse::deadhorse::deadhorse::::

We look forward to your next worthless post. I hope AzB charges you by the letter someday.

When one lacks the logic or rationale to support their position they instead 'attack the messenger' of the other position.

It is a common tactic employed by those that have "WEAK MINDS"... as in that which may have been said by Socrates.

Nobody is attacking you. Simply having an intelligent conversation with Mr Broken Record.
You go on and on and go on and on and go on and on and go on and on and go on and on and go on and on and go on and on and go on and on and ....know what I'm sayin'

I have an idea... why don't YOU... TELL me that the sky is not blue.

You, Scott & Tony have 57 posts in this thread to my 59. You have 31.

This post of mine is in RESPONSE to YOUR post.

That is what a conversational discussion can be.

YOU post... I respond.

Can you wrap your mind around that concept? I doubt it, as you seem to not even realize the difference between supporting your position & the 'attack the messenger' tactic. Support you position with other than just telling me "it works", etc. & convince me of your position... instead of ALL of the personal insulting 'attacks'. The thing is that I & others know why you & others resort to THAT TACTIC.

Little doubt one of you will point out that in takes 3 of you to equal my posts. but will fail to mention that I have been in conversations with others too.

Best Wishes for All.

How many posters does it take to keep up with you. If 3 people call you a horse buy a saddle would ya and some oats.

Gotta be honest...I get a commission for endorsing Scott & Tony. The little duck comes down. How do you think I pay for my SPF lessons. Do you think I really give your posts any regard. Do you really think your posts/thoughts have any value......Oh I need a life...what am I doing here. I might join a bumper pool forum...please tell me I won't find anyone named ENGLISH on it. I'll be off the air for a few days. Please keep me filled in when I get back. And please do not give SPF a thought as nobody will willing to work with the master of long posts... Just keep doing what you have been doing...and you will keep getting what you have been getting. "0". Have a nice weekend. Work on your speed communication theories...they need some fine tuning.

I really don't get it, what is your problem man? I loathe confrontations of all kinds, but this is getting really ridiculous! You word games are a waste of time. Objective this, contrivance that...People are trying to improve at this game so hard, and all you do is shoot things down.

Please enlighten us all, how YOU think one should go about telling someone about how to improve their speed control? I don't need to see you beat the 10 ball ghost or anything like that. Just tell us one tip, give us one tidbit of your wisdom.

I get it, since the CTE thing is closed off to you, you go after the next 3 letter acronym. Surely it can't be that simple? I was thinking about burning this whole forum bridge, you know go out with a bang, but I'll start with you. Please put me on your ignore list. I have no time for people who are only looking for a fight, and contributing nothing.

For what it's worth this is what I found, having spent most of my spare time the last few years working on my game. I don't play word games, don't care about your alliances or your buddy, buddy systems:
Speed work is stroke work. Simple as that. If you have a good stroke, your speed control will be at least decent. Pull back, pause, bring cue forward and push the cue trough the ball. When you start feeling the "push" your speed control will improve, at least mine did. Oh, and vary the length of pull back and follow through, soft shot=short pullback, short follow through etc.

Well, I'm off to spend about 3-4 hours doing drills, mostly line up and cross variations on the snooker table (along with other such exercises), followed by a "sparring" straightpool match against the best pool player in the region (IMO) as he doesn't play many tournaments these days. I do this almost every day, and I go through great lengths to make time for this. It's not just a hobby for me, anymore, it's my passion. What are YOU doing to improve your knowledge and skill at the game?

Oh, I forget, it's AZB,you know everything and all beat the 15 ball ghost blindfolded. I'm not lying when I say I learn something new every day in this game or carom or snooker, even if it's just details. But on here everyone knows everything allready...bah humbug!
