I read this old tread and wondering if there is any truth to Gus making parts for Runde era schon? I just traded for a 1982 R6 Schon . and love the solid hit and the veneer points !!thanks Darrell

......2 - I owned (still own 1) 2 orig Bob Runde Schon's from the mid 80s. Both of those orig 80s Schons played solid just as well as my Bender... BUT than again Gus made the Blanks for those old orig mid 80 Schons. If you ever take notice, if it wasn't for having a different butt cap, there is NO DIFFERENCE in appearence between a plain 4pt/4veneer soild ebony butt sleeve old orig mid 80s Schon or a same era 4pt/4veneer solid ebony butt sleeve Gus Szamboti. Gus was supplying Bob with cue parts. Gus machined every part that went into his cues. Gus was also supplying James Ingram with the Blanks too, also supplying Palmer and George Balabuska with blanks along with Burton Spain. Little TRUE FACTs of cue history for those who did not know??? You wanna know why those old Schons played so solid??? Those old unstained forearms with the wooded dash rings Schons from the mid 80s are actually no different than a Gus Szamboti cue. Bob put the parts together and did his own inlaid work on the higher end models. Gus made the blanks and ? other parts?????? Ask Barry.. let Barry tell yea..

No different than a Gus?
Wrong.
Similar, maybe some of them.
I know of a schon with a Gus 4 veneer forearm.
There is only a few of those floating around.

what???

Please, someone, is this possibly true?? I have an older schon cue, looks like SL-10, razor sharp points yet the solid silver band and not stich ring. Has micarta ferrules, 4 veneer w/ebony points. Everyone who has ever shot with it loves the hit...

I'm sure someone will step in here with more knowledge than myself but this was discussed not that long ago and someone said that Runde said that he made all of his own blanks.

My recollection as well. I've heard of & seen a few that claimed to be Gus forearms but Runde has stated he made his own.

Where are those mythbuster guys?

maybe not

Ask Troy- (koinnkid) what he thinks-he's a Rundy,Schon collector, and has more schon's than anyone. Ask Rundy himself the guys alive building cues as we speak. My opinion Rundy made a name for himself with his quality work in the 80's. And if they are nobody will say till there are all bought up!mark

Gus ??

This is what Troy PMed me back

From Troy(I seen it and what you are saying is a fair statement. I know Evan has a few Gus fronts left. He will not part with them. )

> I read somewhere that less than 12,more like 6 Schons were indeed made with a Gus point blank. There is ONE that I know of that says Schon-Boti on the butt cap. Tommy D.

Schon Szamboti

I have both a Runde and an early R6. The R6 is nice straight grain maple and is not stained, except through time. It plays amazing. I had read that some of the early cues may have been from Gus. If so, cool. I called Runde and asked him to make a shaft for my R6 as mine has very early brown micarta and nickel ring shafts. Bob told me the shafts are old schon shafts from the first year making cues. The R6 is probably 82/83. I asked Bob if he every got blanks from Szamboti. He laughed. Some say Barry has records of Gus selling blanks to Bob. He may or may not have used them. Maybe he dissected them to figure things out. Who knows. I think that the early Schon's hit so good because the forearms are not cored. Per Bob, all the early Schon's are not cored, where the newer stuff and his Runde cues are cored. Here are a few pics of both of them. If anyone wants specs or macro photos of the the R6 points, I would be happy to take photos.

slightly off topic; however I heard a similar story regarding the early cues from Richard Black- that he got blanks from Gus.

I have looked at the points in mine closely, and they are mitered, not wrapped, and Richard just confirmed that my cue is from the 79-80 time frame.

Anyone else hear this rumor?

PS those early Schons are killer! I would definitely love to own one some day.

This is a great thread and there are many interesting posts throughout it. But, if MR. Runde says that he did not use Szamboti Blanks in the early Schon cues how can all this speculation continue, I mean who would know better and why would he not be honest. I know that many would like to see the value of their cues increase, but in the end it really doesn't matter what Richard Black or any other cue makers says, unless people want to call Mr. Runde a liar the blanks were made by Schon.

...it really doesn't matter what Richard Black or any other cue makers says...

Just to be clear I think you may have misunderstood me.

I did not say Richard said that Runde used Gus' blanks; simply that I heard a similar rumor pertaining to the early Richard Black cues (that RICHARD used Gus's blanks).

Sorry for the confusion!

Manwon i didnt know Mr.Runde say either way .. I havent spoke to him or anything like that . Just heard stories and my question was asked not to make my cue go up in value but thought it would be a cool idea if it was true ...but if Runde said it wasnt true then im good with his word...
