It's the Indian not the arrow.....and what I learned

One time 2 guys were wolfing in the pool room and one guy said I could beat you with any cue in the building. Other guys says can I pick the cue?

Guy #1 says sure.
They make a game and guy #2 goes to the basement and comes back with and old house cue that resembles a banana.

Guy #1 got robbed playing with the banana cue.
wow, what a surprise. no one, well most anyway, is saying to go use a pos cue but a decent/good player with ANY cue that is fairly straight and has a decent tip will play his normal speed with it. take this to extremes: player A is 450FR and has a $10,000 custom supercue. player B is a 750FR and has a dinged up house cue. Who 'ya like? Its nice havin a nice wand but very high gear play can be done with junky cues. I've seen it done on many occasions. Go look at the cues used by top snooker players. Many use cues that are 20+yrs old with a tip that looks like a dog chewed on it yet they routinely run 100+.

But if you gave them a Balabushka, they wouldn't be able to run 10.
Bet they could and a lot more. Can't compare anyway due to ball size difference but they'd still run balls. Try the opposite and give the avg. US pool player a 9.5mm snooker cue with a shitty Elkmaster. They'd be so freaked out they couldn't make a ball.

Truth is all things equal the person with better equipment would have an advantage. I saw Parica lose a thousand in a set and one of the stipulations was he had to play with a house cue.

When it was over he offered the guy an even bigger spot but he could use his own cue. Needless to say he was out the thousand as the guy declined.

Maybe. Not necessarily a better cue but just one that they are used to. Big difference. It could still be a junky cue but being used to how it plays is big.

I know my example was extreme I just thought it was kinda funny. Yes as long as the equipment is decent anybody is going to play close to their speed no matter what cue they pick up. Within a day or so they should adjust to where you shouldn’t be able to tell the difference. However just to pick up a different cue can make a difference. Shaft size always affects the way I play, it’s not terribly noticeable to someone watching but I can tell the difference for a day or so.

No doubt. Familiarity is huge. Reminds me of 'TheNatural' when Roy broke that bat he was screwed. Being used to a cue is WAAAY more important than its quality or lack thereof. Back before nailguns you'd see framers use the same hammer for years. It was part of them and switching was not happening unless it broke.

having the best bow and arows wont make you a great archer. You still have to know what you’re doing, otherwise it won’t make any difference at all.

years back once in awhile a very good player would come in and grab a stick off the wall. and run a hundred balls with it.

or beat the best player in town with one. cold off the wall with no warm ups.

still you see many top players playing with a regular wood shaft. if it made much if any difference they would not be able to compete.

People keep referring to house cues. House cues aren't that bad assuming they're straight enough with a decent tip. I'd play anyone in the world if I got to bring them a $20 Walmart cue. The tip is like cardboard. Any pros want to throw $1K at the challenge and try to prove me wrong it could be easy money!

Particularly if you wet his tip before each shot…

It's funny how it came about. Jose was banging balls around on the front table trying to make games. He finally made a game and the guy says, "But you have to play with that stick". Jose had been playing for like an hour with it and agreed.
