Ivory & e-Bay Do Not Go Together

With less than 24 hrs remaining on my auction listing on e-Bay, I received notice my listing was removed because it included mention the ferrules on my cue were ivory and the inlay were ivory & MOP. The policy on e-Bay is pretty much an all-inclusive ban regardless of whether the ivory was elephant ivory or came into the U.S. pre-1900 which is impossible to prove.

I also have my cue listed on the Forum and it "had" a e-Bay link in the listing but obviously that's useless now. I updated my listing to let others know that e-Bay yanked my listing and why. This post is mainly for informational purposes to any interested Forum members.

If you list any pool merchandise or cues on e-Bay, do not mention the word "ivory" in any part of your item's description. My cue was listed on e-Bay for 6 days and 3 hrs on a 7 day auction listing and I had bids on my listing. Tonight the listing was removed with less than 24 hrs remaining because of e-Bay's Animal, Plant, Wildlife Policy and I was instructed not to attempt to re-list the cue on e-Bay.

Pretty sweeping argument for people to stop asking any stupid questions or crying about their customs-delayed, ivory inlayed cues.

I understand that people usually substitute the words "ox bone" for ivory on e-bay now. Just a general information statement. I wouldn't be totally comfortable doing that and I would make sure the winning bidder understood they were buying ivory if someone does substitute the words "ox bone" for ivory. Of course shipping overseas or into the US would be a really bad idea!

Most of the regular sellers here are pretty familiar with Ebay's policy. A few will clearly state something to the effect of "Please call or email for more details about the materials used in the cue."

I've Posted About Ivory Bans Before

I've posted about ivory bans before, not just in reference to e-Bay but also in regard to overseas shipping. There's this one bozo on the Forum that got on my case as being some abberant-minded environmentalist and that I was behaving like the Fourm's "Ivory Nazi".......the guy was just a complete butthead.

Now I have a very mild taste of the ivory curse via e-Bay and will be much more meticulous in what and how I describe something in the future........I will imply so hard that the reader won't have to infer anything from my description.......I just can't do with the cue in question since e-Bay was very emphactic in their instructions.........no ambiguities or vagueness of any kind. in what was stated......"Do not attempt to re-list this pool cue again in the future on e-Bay.".

My auction pulled also Schon STL-17

I always take my own photo's of cues I sell, but, usually copy and paste the details of the cues from the cue manufactures web site if they are available. I of course give the weights and conditions of the shaft(s) and butt. However, ebay did the same thing and ended my listing hours before end like yourself. I need to call ebay as I am wondering if someone is submitting complaints?? or if their system actually scans for the word ivory. I need to notify Schon Cues to re word their description as even if I re word my listing, someone could see that their description states a "type of animal ivory" as this was ebay's reason for pulling my sale and like you, gave me a worthless link with a message of not to repost this item.

Thanks to this post, I'm back in buisness !! Cue for sale, make offer. LOL

If you want to post a cue with ivory in ebay you only have to be creative i.e. iv0ry or, "that pretty white stuff"...been there done that with no issues.

Ebay is run by a tired ol' B***H named Meg...

Most of Ebay policies rotate around ebay & ebay's fees... They couldn't care less about the fraud that goes on, they just want their 5 bucks.

We have the same problem when I advertise Auerbach's cues, if you mention the ivory... it's a no go.

We should actually have a Cue Auction on AZB, with an auction jury as to what is to be auctioned (i.e. nothing under $500)

I don't think she has had anything to do with ebay since 2008. Have to say though, when she took over ebay had 30 employees and an annual revenue of 4 million, when she left it had 15000 employees and annual revenue of 8 billion. Not a bad success story.

If I ran ebay I'd jump at the chance to have the company indicted as an accessory to a crime. My shareholders would love the publicity that their company is aiding and abetting elephant slaughter.

It doesn't make any difference if it's true or not. A federal prosecutor isn't going to care about when the ivory was harvested or whether it's legal or not. The chance to drag a big-name company through the dirt is irresistible. (How many federal prosecutors have lost their job because they brought an unwarranted, un-winnable case? Answer: None.)

Thanks for the informative primer. Good to be informed as new things come up.

Now THAT sounds like the words of one smart cookie.

Your info here is maybe just slightly out of date (maybe the B***H part is current). Weird that a corporation would have policies that relate to their profit motive huh? Go figure.

Thanks for the insight.

Pretty good chance of that happening soon?

Thanks

Kevin

If ebay allowed listings with ivory and made no effort to police the listings...I'd say the chances are better than excellent. I'd give 2:1 odds that ebay would be indicted within 2 years.

The OP's case is just ebay's attempt to show that they are making an honest effort to enforce the Lacey Act (no trade in endangered animals or plants).

ebay can get away with allowing knock-offs because the public doesn't care about fake handbags. But endangered animals are right up there with child abuse and smoking.

eBay doesn't allow knock-offs. They have a program called VERO where entities interested in protecting their trade marks can register and then police eBay's listings. If a VERO member (Louis Vuitton for example) spots an item, that in the expert opinion of the VERO member, they feel is a counterfeit, they notify eBay and eBay immediately ends the listing and then its on the seller to prove authenticy or not relist the item.

Of course eBay is making an honest effort to operate within the law, I mean, why wouldn't they?

Federal kangaroos

Politics and environmentalism are seldom
encumbered by rational reasoning.

But to stay on topic. AS much as I dislike
ebay I understand the profit from the sale
of a few items that may or may not contain
legal ivory does not justify the expense of
having to defend themselves in federal court.

Kangaroos not withstanding.

Exactly. Isn't that what drives most corporate decision making?
