Ivory Ferrule Noise

You know I've been putting Ivory ferrules on my personal Qs, plus many others for 20 plus years. I keep hearing this thing about the "ping", "tink" & other noises from Ivory ferrules. I think the "noise" that people hear, is from badly installed ferrules. I'm presently playing with 3 Qs that have Ivory ferrules. They do not have a funny noise emminating from the ferrule. I beleive that the "noise" comes from installers, who use a pointed drill bit to drill the pilot hole in the ferrule. That makes a hollow sound from the void in the tip of the ferrule. If you use a flat faced drill or shape the tenon to fit the shape of the drill tip, you will get a solid & firm hit from Ivory ferrules...JER

i have made 5 shafts for my cue all ivory ferrules. my fav shaft makes thay "ping" or "click"noise.

i have to disagree. i feel the reason ivory makes that noise is bc when you have a very sold shaft something gotta give somewhere. ivory is a soft material. my best hitting shafts all click

think about a cuetec. i dont like them but they make that ping also and its not from poor constructon.

Hi Dave; I see that you were born, about the time that I started installing ferrules. I don't want to get into a debate about who is right & who is wrong, but I do think that it may be important that the tenon & it's shape fill the cavity of the Ivory ferrule, even more than other materials. Because of Ivory's inert charictoristics, it seems to me that the tenon & the cap of the ferrule MUST be a good fit, in order to give a solid hit. Please, no disrespect intended. Only info...JER

i agree 100% with that. however i dont agree with that being why they click. when u cut my tenon i cut it way big and fit the ferrule on and take it off size it then put it on size it until its perfect. i dont cut corners and im a perfectionist. nothing else clucks like ivory so it has to be a the ivory. badly installed linen ferrules dont click

ps with all do respect how many ferrules do you have to put on in 10 years b4 you get the hang of it. lol cause ive been doing repairs since i was 16

Question:

Are you guys using backing with the Ivory ferulles? Just curious because I haven't ever had a problem with Ivory but I also put backing on everyone that I have installed!

Hello Jerry, I think that you are right about the Tenon filling the gap flush at the end of the ferrule. I do not have the experience you do dealing with this problem, but I have a solution for those that do use a end mill or a boring bar to make their hole. If they are going to use a standard drill bit, they can taper the end of the tenon to get a tight flush fit. In addition they should also fill the entire ferrule with epoxy and then screw the ferrule on the tenon. This way every gap will be filled with epoxy as the excess is forced out the glue relief hole, and then by applying a piece of masking tape over the glue relief hole before applying pressure no addition epoxy will be allowed out during the drying process.

To date this was very effective for me, until I started using an end mill to open the hole.

By the way Jerry I received the shaft conditioner, and I just had a chance to use it the other day on a shaft that the grain raised on. It worked very well, when you start marketing the product I will be in line to buy some.

i always put a pad in my ivory ferrules. no if ands or buts

i wrote this originally but took it out for arguements sake. u use alot of epoyt and apply pressure with my tailstock like putting on a tip. i use 5 min epoxy 15 mins later i put the tip on and take it all down at once

i take alot of time with my shafts bc to me this is what makes and breaks a cue.
 
Ivory ferrules

Why would some Ivory ferrules make the click sound and some not? I've been using Ivory ferrules in my personal cues for about 25 years. I've never had one click. In the last 6 years I've been using Mammoth Ivory, I like the softer hit, no click.

Here again, I've had many cues come to me with that click sound. Especially older cues with denser shafts. I have no answers just facts so I'm curious what everybody else has to say.

BTW. I use no backing but I keep tail stock pressure if using 15 minute epoxy which i seldom use. Normally, the slower curing epoxy.

i dont know but when i hear that sound its a good sound to me. i look for that sound.

i think everyone agrees so far that sound happens on the best hitting cues. it sounds like a harmony to me. i miss balls listening to that sound...lol

i also switched tips to everest M layered. they makes this sound and i knew when i heard it it was a good sound. my friend joey testa a local pro uses everest and one day when we were playin i heard it . i switched immediatly.

i have excelent ears. i can hear if a guys tip is gonna fall off across the pool room... no joke

The old melamine had a ping to it too.
What is ping? Isn't it reasonance?
I don't think it's bad.
Fiber ferrule, there's a quiet one.

the click is the sound of the ivory contracting. it only happens on certin shafts that have verry little deflection. somethings gotta give somewhere. if the shaft doesnt bend
