Sounds like your customer likes a stiffer hitting cue and wants to avoid the flex in longer ferrules. I believe this also reduces the weight of the ferrule and thus reduces deflectioln.

I have built hundreds of cues with 3/4 inch long ivory ferrules. I have never used a capped ferrule because I like to keep the ferrule diameter to 5/16 inch. I also do not use a pad unless it is requested and that does not happen very often. I have had only 3 ferrules fail in over 13 years of cuemaking and they had the tips worn down to almost nothing so any ferrule would have easily failed.

I know others will not agree with me but it works for me. BTW I guarantee ivory ferrules unless they are abused so they would come back if they were not holding up well.

Good Cuemaking,

Dave, I also agree with Arnot completely, However, I would add that if you are not going to use a capped ferrule there is certainly no need for a Pad unless the customer wants it for hit. I also think that the non-capped ferrule (Cored) would be strong, and less prone to cracking or other damage from outside factors such as tempeture chnage.

But if the customer likes the hit of Ivory, you must used a Capp ferrule, the pad is optional. I think by using a non-capped ferrule the hit of a normal Ivory ferrule will be greatly changed.

No problem my 2 cents

I have a Z shaft that has an ivory ferrule on it and it held up just fine. I no longer use the shaft but I broke with it all the time just to see it I would hold up to the abuse. I made the ivory ferrule just a tad bigger just over a 1/16 of an inch than the 1/2 predator puts on the Z. Its capped 1/4 and does have the pad. It might look pretty new but I went down stairs and cleaned it up just for the picture. Ivory looks so good I didnt want to show it all dirty lol.

I've did one that was really short, (under half an inch) and only 10mm diameter once. NOT capped, and never used a pad. They guy that used it is about 6'5 and has a CRUSHING break. it lasted about 6 months. :D
Probably would have lasted 10 times longer if he didn't break with it, but he seemed to take pride in the fact that he did.

i like ivory at 3/4" and with no cap and no pad.i have never had one crack or break on me.i do not break with mine however.i still think melamine or micarta performs a little better, but to me taking the ivory down to 3/4" and having the tenon go through, helps reduce the deflection of ivory.

I use a lot of Ivory ferrules. My son put a 1" Ivory ferrule on his break Q. It doesn't have a cap & it is 15 years old. However, If we put on Ivory ferrules without a cap, we use a 19/64" tenon. It's not much more meat, but it's just what works for us & we like what works. My BLACK HEART CUES that have an Ivory ferrule, would normally have a 5/16" tenon & a 1 1/4" ferrule like all of the rest of my Qs...JER

Threaded and epoxied so it stays tight.
Capped for the hit.
My 2 cents.

thanks guys.

i think uncapped is the way to go

the way i learned capped was the only way to go

however no pad is not an option. i always use that. my pref
