Ivory Ferrule?

Grain in the ivory or black light shine on it and if you see grain or some call them veins .

if you cant tell by looks a light sanding ans smell will do it. if it remonds you of the dentist its ivory.
the grain doest always work. the ivory ferrule i play with is is all white. zero grain. its the cleanest ivory ferrule ive ever seen so i saved it for myself. while it is rare i guess to someone that doesnt know what they are looking for i can see there being some confusion

Some ivory is cleaner then others also, (whiter in color )!

Cue won't be here until next week.....I'll be sure to try the sandpaper method out and let you know....FYI it is from a 1985 Joss with the year on the collar, I wasn't sure if all of them came w/ standard ivory ferrules on the shafts or not...Dan Janes doesn't remember.

in a cue 25 years old anything could have changed... esp ferrules
> In '85,Joss East was most certainly using ivory ferrules as standard,that was LONG before even the original Aegis. The reason I have the Schon I so dearly love is I felt I could get a nicer cue for the 1100 I paid for it than I could from Joss,esp since I wasn't settling for an off-the-rack cue. If I had had the cash to do it then,my first nice cue would have been a Joss Model 12,the same model Mike Sigel won so many titles with. I feel the feel and hit was very similar,and one of the reasons they played so well was indeed the ivory ferrules. They sure sound sweet too. Tommy D.

The only downside to me is you can't leave your cue anyplace you wouldn't sleep.
Weather extremes do funny things. Ivory swells and can crack if it gets hot,and I've seen a cold one literally shatter and explode.
Diligent tip maintenance by skilled people or self-maintenance is also required.
It polishes better than anything out there,and because the surface can be so highly polished,chalk dust can simply be wiped clean 100%,or simply blown off. No synthetic offers this.
They feel GREAT.
They offer a "musical" quality to the sound of the hit.
If installed properly,and the ivory is cut right,it's almost unbreakable playing normal pool. Maybe someone with Larry Nevel-like power might disagree with that though.
It also glues perfectly with CA,epoxy,or Elmer's/Titebond etc. Tommy D.

I'm surprised to hear of the strength though. Not saying it isn't so ... it just surprised me.
The couple I have played with, very limited, did seem to deflect like mad however compared to the Predator I'm used to.
As far as the sound and look however ... I agree completely.

> I should have mentioned this aspect in my other post. If you are a player that is on the low-deflection side of the on-going debate,they WILL take some getting used to. I've never owned a Pred/OB/Tiger X or any of the other LD shafts,and one of the reasons is the lack of durability of the LD materials.
Changing the ferrule to ivory on one of the LD shafts might also be a way to crisp up the feel of a mushy/rubbery shaft too,I used to see guys doing that to Meucci shafts,and the difference was apparent. Tommy D.
