I'll bet my whole cue isn't worth one of your ferrules

I have never had an Ivory ferrule, but I will settle for one that doesn't turn blue. whats up with cue technology? we can buy a phone that will put the internet into your pocket, but we cant come up with a ferrule material that does what its supposed to without turning blue from the chalk.

Phenolic ferrules won't turn blue.

nothing like a plain 4 pointer, SS joint, forward weighted, Ivory ferrule with a pad!...and a LePro. At one point EVERYONE I knew was playing that combo it seemed. :D

hijacking below...
I posted a couple of years ago about new ferrule materials and nobody was into it but a few cue builders. My last cue a friend made me out of an old house stick, and we cut it apart to build a custom. When it came to ferrule time I was gonna go with Ivory, but had a revelation. That morning I was putting in a new kitchen for a customer and had to cut the kitchen sink hole, which I did leaving a giant piece of left over 5/8" thick white "Corian" which was in the back of my truck. I stopped at Mikes place and said here....make me some ferrules outta this! I still have the cue....the ferrules are pure white and shiny as ever. They play more like Ivorine then real Ivory, or on the hard side. Funny Corian never took off for ferrules?...Some of the cue makers at the SBE really liked them....

All you have to do is ask someone who knows...
Tiger has developed a material thats very similar to what they make false teeth out of...its called Saber T. The material is bright white, no pits, to trash, no linen weave look. It stays white & will not absorb chalk. If you manage to get chalk on it....it'll simply wipe clean as new with your finger. Very nice hitting ferrule as well. I use them on many of the cues I make. :)
I prefer to be animal friendly & not use ivory. While ivory ferrules will indeed make your cue worth a bit more....there are too many man made material ferrules available that hit just as well & are much more durable.

No worries. You wouldn't want ivory anyways. With your 40+ MPH break speed, you'd be shattering ferrules on a daily basis.

whats the differences between ivory ferrules and other ones.
ivory ferrules are very brittle compared to the other composite materials of today. ivory should have a fiber pad between the tip and ferrule as a shock absorber. ivory turns yellow if left in darkness for long periods of time.

i used a magic eraser last night on my cues... Worked very well...
I tried these a coupla years ago. They cleaned great, but the microfibers raised and opened the grain of my shaft, which I had to smooth down. The extra smoothing wasn't a big deal but I worried about greater risk of warpage and gradual loss of shaft material.

I still have some Magic Eraser left over from then, and I use it maybe once a year for "spring cleaning", but not as my regular shaft cleaner.

For me, truer words were never spoken. I understand and appreciate the opinions of the well intentioned animal lovers on the ivory issue. There have been many recent, very well written and researched threads on the subject. I've decided to continue using ivory in my cues. In the meanwhile, I'm openminded but I'm yet to see any material that I like as well. LBM or melamine is my favorite substitute, but, like any second best material it just plays like something is missing for me. I like a shock pad too, but the jury's still out on whether for feel or looks. Either will do. A Talisman medium or a Moori med round out my preferred combination...Tom

In a completely polite, non-preachy way I'd like to add my name to the list of those who don't want ivory in their cue.
