if you were to make a cue with a standard lenght handle how much ivory would it take to make a handle? i would say a three or four segmented handle? if this question is to hard to answer sorry for the question...thanks mickey i would ask what the normal cost would be but i know that it is diffrent from cuemaker to cuemaker...

3 of these

= around 900 dollars and you take the risk during the installation (I have done this twice with different makers)

call me if you have questions - but basically a cuemaker that tries to charge 5k for an ivory handle is a cheat IMO.

good luck

thanks for the replys.....ryan how long are you going to be staying in canada....gl i hope work goes well.....

elk handle

for years i wanted to build a cue with a solid ivory handle. i wanted at least 10 inches of ivory, i checked with warther at the time the cost would be close to 1000.00 for a piece of ivory 1 1/4 inches dia by 10 inches long. then it would have to be drilled and cored. i talked to a few other builders, and was told that the ivory could very easily crack in the drilling process. and because ivory is very heavy there might be a weight problem. it looked like a lot of risks. a segmented handle might be a bit better, but i wanted a solid handle. i bought every kind of horn, bone i could find that might be big enough. water buffalo, giraffe leg bone, sambar stag, whitetail, american buffalo, gemsbok, a few others i can't remember and elk antler. i finally found a dealer that cuts 100's of lbs each year of elk sheds he ships to the orient, he saves me all the pieces straight enough, solid enough that might work for handles. its more durable than ivory, it will not break or chip as quick as ivory will, i know its not ivory but a great 2nd.

Not a cuemaker but got some questions:

would it make sense to have a segmented handle made of 10-12 pieces of 1 inch ivory pieces with phenolic rings in between? for the weight issue, couldnt it be cored? I know coring might cause cracks because of heat, but if they were 1 in butt cap sizes, it might be safer than 3-4in pieces (which would be more expensive).
As for the core, would it be a good idea to core it as if it were a ivory sleeved joint? like core a piece of phenolic with wood, then use that cored phenolic as the core for the ivory?

Partner, since a wrap area in most cases is 12 inches in length minimum that is approximately what it would take.

The only cue I have ever examined with an Ivory handle was made by Harvey Martin. Harvey turned Ivory Cue Balls so in cues built by Harvey most contained 8 segments, however, two were specially built using 9 segments. I think this method of construction would be the best because finding a suitable solid 12+ inch piece of Ivory would be more difficult to obtain and much much more expensive.

anyone know if the phenolic sleeve coring technique and the 12 one inch segmented handle part suggest below are good ideas?

Sorry OP, I don't mean any disrespect for bringing up a dated thread to ask an off topic question.

CueComponents/Joe, do you have any pictures showing further progress of this build?

Thank you

Concerning ivory handle cues, you never know when they will crack.

When you pay big bucks for a cue like that what happens to your investment when you wake up one morning and you see a crack, :boring2::eek:

If you have 5500.00, maybe invest in the college he has to offer? I'm sure he'd teach you all about it.
