Ivory Joint Conditioning / Maintenance

I was told by a cue builder that I should rub a small amount of baby oil on my ivory joint to keep it from drying and cracking. Anyone else heard of that or have any thoughts on it? Thanks.

ive heard of it. when i was younger i did it but now i dont and i havent had an ivory joint problem in years. drastic change in weather is a bigger problem IMO

like leaving it in the car. too hot, too cold. transporting from hot to cold to hot again could crack. i am a huge fan of vaccume sealed cases for this reason

I'll step out on the limb.........baby oil has been used for years on ivory. Helps slow the moisture transfer and helps with the drying out too quick.

That method has been recommended for many years by cuemakers. I never bothered and never had one crack, but it sounds like it might be the way to go especially in dry climates.

In all honesty I don't see how baby oil could help the ivory joint because the joint is covered in clear coat. I think it could hurt the finish of the cue however.

Arnot and Dave are correct and I didn't state my question correctly. It was to put in on the end grain / face of the joint.

I also got a PM recommending mineral oil to do the same thing.

I was told something similar, and after doing some research I found some information on the subject. In the old days the Billiard Players use to use Virgin Olive Oil to clean and condition their Ivory Billiard Balls. Now it certainly made a great deal of sense to me, I mean Virgin, Oil, clean balls:grin: As I read on I found out that Ivory can be given longevity by allowing it to breath, and conditioning it occasionally with a natural organic Oil.

I would put it on any unfinished (unsealed) part of the ivory. For the most part, that would be the end of a joint or the end of a butt cap in your case.

I've always used baby oil on my ivory joints (and ferrules and butt caps too). I've been doing it for years without issue and figure the old saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, goes well here.

I have seen cracked ivory joints, ferrules, and butt caps before. Those obviously could've been from abuse, but I'd rather not chance it.

Just what I do, YMMV.
