J&J Jump/Break - Any use?

I'm in the UK and started out playing a bit of snooker, but I'm going to be playing mainly American pool starting in the near future - 8 ball, 9 ball, 10 ball and 14.1, which looks very interesting to me indeed.

I've played 8 ball and 9 ball with a snooker cue (10mm tip) and although it may not be ideal I can get along with it for now. Not for breaking or jumping, though. Since I'm pretty new to the game, and on a budget, I'm looking for a break/jump cue in one without spending too much cash. This is the best I've come up with so far:

This J&J doesn't look too bad to me, has a phenolic ferrule/tip and is wrapless, which I'd prefer.

Really, I'm looking for any advice on whether this cue is any use, if anyone's tried one and if it would help me at all. Is 20oz maybe a little heavy for a break cue?

Thanks in advance knowledgeable pool people!

Should be just fine. As far as break cues go, and if you're only looking for a phenolic tipped breaker, there's really not much difference between them besides the looks and the weight. I've found I like a break cue to be in the 18oz. range, but I think it's personal preference really. If it breaks down so that you can use it to jump as well, you want the jump handle portion to be light, and again, phenolic tipped.

If you didn't want a phenolic tip, I'd defer to others who have had more experience with various natural tipped breakers/jumpers, but the phenolic really levels the playing field as far as variety goes.

My opinion is , you need to look at the rules for what you are wanting to play. The reason is because with some leagues in the US, there is a ban on Phenolic tips when used for breaking.
As far as I am aware the phenolic tips can still be used for jump and trick shots.
As far as break cue weight goes, there seem to be several thoughts on that, like a can of worms.
On one camp is the break cue should be 1-2 oz heavier than your play cue.
Another is the breakcue should be the same weight and balance as your play cue but has a tip that if it gets out of shape , does not really matter as it is only for breaking.
A new thought at the moment is to have quite a light break cue, in the range of 11 oz with a hard leather tip. It is used for the Break and is used as a full length jump cue as well.
For myself ,I break with my play cue and switch out the play break tip to a play tip after the break. My cue is 15 oz.
I am now playing pool and snooker with a 10mm tip.It just has a smaller radius to make the same tangent point as a 13 mm tip would.

Very good cue for the money. Have one myself breaks great & also jumps very nicely. Mine has a white diamond tip on it.

I've let quite a few other people at the Pool hall try it and some like it better than the BK2's that they were using.

I have had J&J since 07, and really like it... I took the phenolic tip off this past weekend and put a hard leather break tip on it, that I got from a board bro which the tip also works well

But even with the phenolic tip it broke very well, good balance, good stiff hitting shaft.

I mean for 65-70$ the cue does it's job very well.

I have the exact same cue as one shown in your link....20 oz. and wrapless...I think my shaft diameter is around 13.5mm...

It breaks great, it jumps great...I've had J/Bs that cost a lot more, and they played about the same...

For the money J&J is a great cue.

My J&J helped me pull out a great come from behind victory earlier tonight...I had been breaking with my player, and constantly coming up dry for the first 3 racks.

I switched to my J&J, and ran a 3 pack, playing barbox 10 ball. I ran to the 5 ball in rack #4, and played a great safe; got ball in hand, and ran out...

That cheapo break cue probably saved the match for me.

Great cue for the money. Have one with 2 shafts. Breaks and jumps good.

Only complaint is that the rubber bumper comes out easily. You need to take it out, put a spot or two of glue there, and put it back in.

I got my J&J J/B back in 1999, great cue. Would recommend it to anyone particularly for the price. I picked up a spare shaft early on. Good to have just in case. Very easy on the wallet too. Why risk beating up your custom, right?

for the price it can't be beat. a $400+ custom breaker is going to break a hair better but if you break ok you won't notice a $360 worth of difference.

they get 2 thumbs up imo!

Huge thanks to all the guys that posted, it's been really helpful!

I'm going to go with the J&J, Ivorine ferrule and phenolic tip. Leaves me the option of switching to a hard leather one if it doesn't feel right. Looking forward to working on the break - there's a lot of room for improvement right now...

Thanks again!

the J&J is a good deal for this kind of cue and it works just fine...

Also it allows you to use the butt piece with the shaft for longer jumps and if 20 OZ is too much for you, there is a changeable weight bolt in the butt piece...

good luck!

J&J cues are of very good quality in general. don't be fooled by it's cheap and affordable price. you'd be surprised that they are better than some other well-known cues.
