Barbara

Last I heard.. Robles, Hopkins, Colavita, Lillis, and a few more were on the
winners side.. I also think Barouty and Garrahan may be on the winners side..

Well, Yoby, I wish I could give you better info than this, but the guy I spoke to on the phone at Comet wasn't able to tell me more than who remained on the winner's side. He indicated that Danny Barouty will play Santos Sambajon for the hot seat. Go Danny!

What???? Sambajon is playing straight pool and on the winners side??? Man would like to see his patterns. Has he done the Efren straight pool break? Cross Bank in the side and cue ball 3 rails into the stack like he did at the Nationals in NY.

I was there!

I couldn't believe it when Efren made that shot. Who else could play that cool against someone like Sigel. The magican either has nerves of steel, or he's crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well...guess I missed it

The tournment was really badly advertised. You can't find information anywhere about who was playing, results, etc., except from hearsay. Getting to Comet Billiards is another problem for those of us who don't have a car. I had to do some real intelligence work to figure the bus lines out, and now it looks like it is too late. Too bad, I was looking forward to some straight pool. If anyone's got the results and details of the tournment out there, please let us hear it. From now on we'll be stuck with 9 ball. :(

Yeah the coverage of this tournament is pretty crappy, you would think AZ would be covering the event

And the coverage of the world 8ball championships isn't any better, $100,000 tournament and no brackets or anything

Though I didn't attend today, I've just spoken to somebody at Comet. The latest is that the final has just begun between Danny Barouty and Bob Maidhoff. Danny Barouty, from queens, NY, is a local NYC straight pool legend, who ran a 246 once at Corner Billiards in Manhattan, and I don't know whether that's his highest run or not. Bob Maidhoff, who lives closer to Philadelphia than NYC, isn't as well known, but is a solid player. If memory serves, Bob's pool mentor was Jimmy Caras. I know Bob has run over 200 in straight pool, but don't know what his high run is.

Still, I can't say who was in the field at this event, though I know that straight pool gurus Tony Robles and Allen Hopkins both played in it.

Hi Folks,

I believe Bob owns Drexeline Billiard Club in Drexel Hill, PA. Nice room, nice guy! Joss Tour stop there on November 27/28.

Dan Barouty has won the event, by a score of 200 - 73 in the final.

Good things happen to good people. Danny is the single best ambassador for straight pool in New York City, and his win will be very popular with all who've had the pleasure of meeting him.

Thanks Keith! Yes Danny Barouty is a great player and man. So is Bob Maidhof. Great 14.1 artists. Thanks New Jersey. Why not New York next.

Hi yobagua,

Why not New York? I tried to arrange a Joss stop for 14.1 this year. Everyone I spoke with told me it would be destined to failure. Too far from NYC. Too far from Phili, etc. Three hotel nights. No one would travel for $2000 added. Sad. I know lots of players that said they would play. We can't take a chance on not filling a 32 player field @ $200 entry. Jack Colavita and staff were chided on this forum for not advertising the New Jersey event well. Only spectators complained. Their field was full!

Interesting field

Seems Dallas West and Lou Batera played, and I don't know that they were in it last year. But it appears there were no centuries. Anyway, Danny deserves our finest congratulations. New York is certainly proud. It's a pitty Hohmann couldn't make it, though he played the Open. As for the advertising of the tournment, I do not want to criticize anybody. I think it could have been better, but approaching it as a contructive suggestion. We could not be thankful enough to anyone who puts a straight pool tournment together these days. JC is the man!

I stopped in on Sat. As always, it was a well run event with a talented field. Hopkins had a tight match with Maidhoff. It went back and forth til the score was around 75-73. From there, Maidhof ran out for the win. One of the more dominating matches was Robles vs. Rodriguez. Robles steamrolled Flaco, who can play a little too. The final score was something like 150 - 9. In reality, it wasn't even that close. Basically, Tony had runs of 72(?) and 78 or so and I think the match was over in two innings. I think Flaco shot twice. Another notable run was by Dallas West witha 112. What I love about this guy is how smooth he does it. Never forces the ball and moves effortlessly around and thru the stack. Then there's Danny Barouty. He was unstoppable this weekend. I think that was the general concensus among everybody. He was a man on a mission this weekend, played solid and made few mistakes.

If you love Straight Pool, this is one of the better events. Gotta check it out.

It sounds like a great event. I'd love to see something like that in the Chicago area. How can players afford to travel and pay $200 entry to take a chance at winning something like this? And how can the promoter afford to put up the money for an event like this? I'm sure these are dumb questions, but...
