Jack Hynes stories? (I know, I know)

I have a picture of Jack on a bar table team from sometime in the early 1980s one of his teammates was Poochie Sexton, I always wondered if Poochiewas one of Jacks mentors or if he was already a player when they met? Anybody know?

Ive known Jack for years. He told me he learned to play pool from a guy named Bucky Ball. Ive never heard of the guy, but he must be a hell of a teacher.

Jack Hines pretty much lived with his grandmother during his teen years and learned to play pool in Toledo by watching and playing Bobby Smith, Larry Ridgeway, Dave McIlhargey, Steve McAninch, Johnny Dollar (Donnie Nash), and a few other cronies that hung around the Hi-Q on Monroe St. near Talmadge. THEN he started playing with Bucky Bell, Poochie, Cornbread Red, Richie Richeson and a few others from Michigan to start tuning up his pro game.

Jack was a great player that lost his way through drugs and alcohol. He could have been a world champion and has, at times, beat many of them.

I won $2500 one time..we get to the greenroom a lil late & he is already in action with this older guy smoking a cigar & playing barefooted i believe if not had sandals on..they had just started playing races to 7 for $500..nobody knew who the guy was including me & lil jon was going by another name to the guy thinking he was the hustler..well lil jon asked me if I wanted to bet on the other guy..I said sure & bet him same bet they was betting...old man wins 5 sets in a row...I win $2500 betting on a complete stranger...the good old days..lol

Sounds like Cigar Tom Vanover from Baltimore, he took a trip down that way some years ago, the only person that beat him was CJ WILEY, and Tom had him stuck before they raised the bet.

Anyway Troy, the man that was smoking a cigar, did he play with a funny looking shalf, very very thin and a tiny tip?

The Flamingo Lounge days.....I just heard from Charlie Jensen a couple of weeks ago - he was there with me. I was dating Gerry Titcomb's daughter back then, that was an "interesting" time in my life. TR was staking me against anyone, and Buddy was there as well in Tampa.

The guy with the cigar, could it have been Benny Conway? He was quite a hustler/player in his time, and smoked a cigar most of the time.

Wasn't Tom...I talked to the guy after they played...We had a guy in Houma back then Daulton Bourg that played out a wheelchair that was supper juicy & loved playing strangers so i was trying to get him to come to Houma & we could make some money... Somebody pm'd me saying it sounds like Steve Wiggins..That name kinda sounds like it might ring a bell..The guy had redish hair with a beard, lil overweight..not supper heavy..main thing i remember was him with that cigar playing barefooted...Not sure if he was laying down too much..I remember the sets being close but he won every single set..But he did say he was from the Carolinas tho

I spent a few times at the Flamingo Lounge years ago when I was running with Earl Kellum. The owner and Earl were good friends and he staked Earl a lot. Does it still have the same owner now that owned it back in the 80's? He was a super nice guy and liked to bet it up staking. If I remember right, the place had the first 9 foot coin operated table I had ever seen. If its the same owner and someone here is a regular there, let me know and I'll get him to tell you about one of the biggest flukes to happen in pool one night there.

I know a Steve Wiggins that owned a poolroom in Myrtle Beach in the 80's. I carried a 15 year old Jimmy Wells there to play him a few times.

.there were some real characters hanging out there, that's for sure

Yes, I think his name was Dale and Earl Kellum was around there playing quite a bit. Earl steered me and never wanted to play himself, but he did turn me on to some great "spots". My friend Charlie owned the "One Pocket Club" on the second floor there in St. Pete....there were some real characters hanging out there, that's for sure.

I'm bumpin this up just to keep it alive!

This is good stuff, keep it coming boys!

GREAT STORIES.

I agree.

Anymore posts on Jack, Lil John, or others? I know the thread is supposed to be about Jack, but the other stories are good, too. Sorry OP.

If thats the case, then you have to include that match Jack had with Earl in 1988 in ohio, man that was the best match ever.

I think the score was 10-9 Jack going to 11, Jack played a great safe (lock down safe) no way was earl going to hit the 7 ball, Earl didnt only hit the 7 he made it, then went on to win that match!

You could see on Jacks face how much that hurt him!

Iam sure someone on here will post that clip, i would but i have no idea how to do things like that!

Jack made me watch that match 100 times, LOL
