I know this tournament had the same equipment for everyone, but it suprises me that they would have Brunswicks instead of their own knock-offs. 5" pockets are a joke to these caliber of players.

One thing I liked was the players got 1 rack for warm-up and then they got it on. It looked like the tournament ran like clockwork. Johnnyt

5" pockets? Really? Makes you wonder why. I agree it`s not at all intersesting to watch these guys play on a table like that. I like watching pros play on tables that make them a little nervous. It`s like watching a pro golf tournament on a 6,200 yard course with flat greens.

Well, we all went to bed thinkin semis and finals would stream tonight.... I woke up around 3am eastern to get my girl a bottle when I saw that the stream was up again.... Unfortunately, they chose to show ladies 9-ball final instead of the men's.... Why not just separate the start times??? The 17 yr old chinese sensation Chen Siming played flawless pool, winning 9-4 over Junko Mitsuoka in short time.... I had never seen Siming play... The women are gonna have their hands full with this young champion... Ko Pin Yi came out on fire 5-1 over Wu to start men's final....

By the time women's final finished, Wu had battled back to 5-4 once stream had started.... He missed one open shot at 6-4 and never had another chance.... Ko closed it out 10-4....

Ko Pin Yi had an amazing tourney.... Whitewashing Chang 10-0 in quarters just after Chang had sent Mika packing..... There is a link below of Pin-Yi for those that haven't seen him in action.... It's the Guinness 10-ball final from earlier this year.... He puts it on SVB to take home a cool 40k....

Wu seemed destined to take this thing down from the beginning..... Putting 2s, 3s and 4s together erfrenlessly on the soft equipment..... His cannon break and precision patterns kept his opponents glued to their chair..... Watching hopelessly, knowing their fate had been sealed.... It was quite the treat for some of the viewers that had never seen Wu in action.... I think he's either 21 or 22.... I see this young man holding the record for world titles when all is said and done....

Would've been nice to see SVB, Alex or Daz on the stream.... Round of 16 had Alex vs SVB and Daz vs Wu.... We were all sure we'd see one of the two great matchups.... Instead they streamed Chao vs Kuribayashi, which turned out to be a hill-hill thrilla.... I was impressed with Toru play under the pressure of the "stoned face killer"

SVB and Wu both won their matches 10-6 and were aligned to meet in semis.... Finally, SVB would make it on the stream for the "clash of the titans"

Not so fast my friend... Shane didn't see much of anything losing 10-6 to Chang Yu-Lung after being up 5-2..... Oh, what could've been.... Imho, Wu vs SVB 10 ball would be a dream TAR matchup.... Wu might be the only man on the planet capable of outrunning shane's break in a long race....

In closing, it was great to see some worldbeaters finally play that I've only heard of.... Maybe alt breaks would be better for tighter matches on such soft equipment... But most of us love to see a player hit a gear and string racks together.... The magic rack sealed into table worked flawlessly.... The ten stayed within the rack about 98% of the time....

Hats off to Ko Pin-Yi and Chen Siming for their near flawless play throughout... I have no doubt that we'll see these two amazing talents in the winner's circle again....

Nice write up Playin4dinner. Thank you. This young 17 yo Cheng has earned POY. She has won almost all the big ones she has entered. Johnnyt

PS:I agree the tables played too easy for these top players.

YUP, The Chao match-up was an exciting match to watch.............I fell off soon after though :(

Ko against Wu run 4 or 5 racks... I don't know if the pockets were really 5 inches but they looked really big. Also the table was breaking really easy, on every break Ko made atleast one ball and two and three balls on occasion...

Photo On Earlier Reply Small Pocket !!!

Unless my eyes were deceiving me those pockets did'nt look like buckets.

The earlier post showed a pocket smaller than 4 and a half.

The side pockets looked like the normal brunswick tables.

I don't think Japan makes brunswick tables anymore.

Hope someone at the event will clear up the pocket size 4 us.

No way those pockets were under 4 1/2". At the smallest i'd say 4 7/8". I'm not trying to take anything away from the tournament or its players, but for pool fans that can play well those pockets are easy. Johnnyt

Pocket size can be deceiving when viewed on video as opposed to seeing it in person. I've seen video footage of matches played on a table that I personally played on that had 4.5" pockets. When I saw the video the pockets looked huge! Balls were dropping like crazy. Also the new cloth makes them play a little easier than normal.

Maybe someone that knows Shane on Facebook could ask him what size the pockets were when he gets home. Johnnyt

Pockets in Japan tend to range from 4 1/2 to 4 7/8 in. 5 inch pockets are pretty rare except at game centers, and tight pockets tend to only be on one or two tables in each room. The All Japan Championships probably had pockets in that range, but they probably play easy due to slidey cloth.

Thanks 14.1

Perhaps the photo which 14.1 has the link for could B the actual size.

Johnny, I'm planning 2 attend the Mosconi Cup.
I'm sure that I can ask Shane about those pockets and I will get Darren and Ralph to put their 2 cents in as well.

I think Masayoshi is correct about normal play at Japanese rooms.
However conditions at the final 64 in Osaka could have been different.

Japan 10 Ball Championships

Hi all,

I tuned in and seen a few matches and Wu impressed me .

I thought the semi's and final matches would be right now .

So I went to bed .

Sounds like I missed out on some great matches .

That's what time zones does to you .

Fall asleep and you miss out all the action . :boring2:

If this is the pocket then it's not over 4.5"

Regarding the tables a little geography lesson is in order. Japan is not China and there are no Japanese table makers that I know of. This tournament has been held for 44 years and I was there 13 years ago and as I remember it the setup was nearly identical to what I saw on the stream. As far as I know there are many rooms in Japan with genuine Brunswick tables.

I think that the caliber of play made the tables look easier than they were. What we saw was some phenomenal play on the stream.

Chinese pros regularly practice on tables with 4"-4.25" pockets. So with them playing on 4.5" they will certainly be more confident.

As I remember it the All Japan Championship was a very well run event with very strict adherence to protocol. I doubt highly that they made the table conditions easier than professional events anywhere else in the world.

If they had had 5" pockets then Shane would have run out every set from his first break. :-) Considering what we saw him do to Alex on 4 1/8th" pockets that is.

Japan has a table maker called Galion, but they aren't very popular even here. Most serious pool halls have Gold Crowns. Diamonds are for the most part non-existent.

There is something about perception on a stream that has me guessing many times (angles, pocket size, etc). I hope this helps clear things up:
