I guess it was inevitable that after years of interacting with the CTE guys, you would end up adopting their preferred method of attacking the man rather than the message.
Regarding the first shot, I used to shoot it a lot when the pockets where 5 inches in the corners. Now that the pockets are way smaller and even have "shelves" in the sides pockets for some of them and a very square profile, the shot isn't viable and shouldn't be shot. Especially since you lose control of the object ball. Back in the big pocket days, I'd also frequently kick or bank ball from around the middle of the short rail to the sides, as a 2 way shot, and make those shots a lot of the time. This shot is now also off the table for me. I always make sure, when I'm shooting a shot of this nature as a safe, not to hit the pocket but go short or long. The small percentage you make is no longer worth the loss of control of the object ball on the near misses.
I think the secret to making that particular cut shot JB demonstrates, the highest possible number of times, is to roll it at a slow-ish speed without outside spin, so the throw turns the object ball around the point. It's a very specific speed where this happens. Obviously this only happens when you cut the ball this way and not the other way, in which case you want gearing english to avoid the ball turning out, but those shots probably will not go often on modern tables, anyway.
