His name is CPT Osborne. He is in the Army, and is on night shift with me every night. He was adopted into an American family, but maintains contact with his Korean biological family. He has talked about getting together with the family at Christmas time, and how his family doesn't necessarily consider him a success, being an officer in the military.

He told me he is amazed at Jeanette's popularity, and he says he thinks the rest of the family is too. I believe he said that it wasn't the most popular decision when Jeanette started playing, and that they are somewhat befuddled (but happy) that she is known internationally.

CPT Osborne has a unique perspective on this. He sees Jeanette in a way such that he is connected to the family, but he is maybe not so much ingrained into the Korean family structure as everyone else in the family, so he sees Jeanette as outsiders do.

He had nothing but praise for Jeanette, and I think her whole family is proud of her for making such a big impact as a Korean woman.

I asked him if he knew Jeanette's husband, and he said "George? Oh yeah.. That's weird, who ever saw them as a couple, huh?" with a smile. When I told him the general consensus was that George probably played better than Jeanette, he was really surprised.

He also mentioned how weird it was that he had met so many, many people that knew his cousin, and followed her career.

Figured everyone might get a kick out of this little factoid.

Obligatory disclaimer: I am no longer in the military. I am a contractor working with the armed forces over here. lest any of my detractors try to say I am decieving you all into thinking I am a service member.

See? It didn't take him long, did it? Some people seem to think that the 12 rockets the insurgents fired into my compound a few days ago cared that I was a civilian. :D We had one civilian who had only been here a month or two freak out and he was on a plane tonight.

Trust me. It takes a certain type to just shrug if off when artillery is exploding all around you, even as a civilian. I sleep during the day in a thin aluminum trailer with no overhead protection, WHEN all of the mortar and rocket fire comes in, bsmutz, so PISS OFF!

I've watched a Korean TV station produced documentary on Jeanette, done in Korean and English (I can habla both).

Her family appears to be fairly "traditional" Korean family. I was very impressed with how Jeanette was portrayed .. she seems like a decent person. I can't say if it was how it was edited, but her behavior around her family is very humble and dearig.

She's a lot like me ... culturally we both relate closer to "Western" culture but food ... gotta have some old country cooking!!!!!!

I'm eating chamchi kimbap as we "speak" but it was pojang so they wouldn't give me any KIMCHI!!!! I hate that.

I agree with you on this one Russ. rocket fires and mortar fires do not choose their victims. it takes a lot of guts to try and play catch with these things. it might be fun to hear stories of what war is, but once you are there, when you hear all the noises of gunfire, rocket explosions and feel the tremble of the ground after being hit by rockets day after day and night after night, you would wish you had never been there and stayed at home instead.
