Wow, I hadn't seen Jerry in quite sometime, but I've sure sweated his action over the years, sometimes on his side and sometimes against him. :D

I like Jerry a lot. From Pittsburgh originally, he's traveled around the East Coast mainly, hanging his hat in a variety of locales. Wherever Jerry goes, however, you can be sure there will be Action Jackson.

Well, I'm not here to knock Jerry's action. Just to make Jerry feel a little better in case he reads this thread or somebody shows my post to him, Jerry Baby needs a spot from my horse! :nanner:

Here's a cute article about Jerry Slivka from February 5:

The Rack 2009 9-Ball Open Super Bowl

They came from all over to play in this great event that has been going on for 25 years right here in Memphis, TN. New owner Jerry Ramey, and tournament director Mark Dionne were very pleased when a full field of 128 players showed up on Friday.

The tournament got underway on Friday night right after the Calcutta and continued into the late hours on Sunday morning. Entry fee was $25, Race to 7, Ladies get 2 games, played on 9 foot Diamond tables.

The semi finals match was slow and dragging until rack 11, where Adam Wilson from Muscle Shoals, AL heated up the table with a strong run out, following a scratch on the break by Jerry Slivka from Pittsburgh, PA bringing the match to 6-5, Slivka leading. Wilson with a dry break in rack 12, left a clear contact to the one ball, but seeing a tough run out, Slivka plays a strong safe, leaving a table length kick from the short rail that Wilson couldn?t get out of. With ball in hand Slivka anticipates a slim one-nine combination and gets it, bringing the match to 7-5 for the win.

In the finals it was Justin Sanders from Jackson, Tn wins the toss and sinks 2 balls on the break but pins the cue ball behind the eight, with no easy shot on the one ball. Sanders jumps over the eight ball, contacting the one, nearly scoring in the corner pocket. Slivka returns for a strong run on the first rack, but struggled a bit on the second, giving Sanders a few swings back at the table, only to turn it back over for Slivka to win rack two and run rack three perfectly.

Sanders seemed to be coming back after winning rack 5 but found his seat again when he jumped the cue ball off the table on the break for rack 7, bringing Slivka back for yet another great out, bringing the score to 5-2, Slivka leading.

Slivka took rack 6 quickly with the 9 on the snap, but the luck didn?t carry as the cue ball found a pocket on rack 7, bringing Sanders back for a decent run, until he missed a tough table length shot to cut the 6 ball in corner pocket. When it was all over it was Jerry Slivka taking home the Super Bowl 2009 bragging rights and $1,500.00 in cash.

Payouts paid out 16 places and with the Calcutta paid out over $11,000. If you ever passing thru Memphis stop in at The Rack, you will like the action 24/7.

Way to go Jerry! :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:

Sheesh, could they make the picture any smaller?! :o

> I didn't get to make it to The Rack this year, and hated it. The original owner,Don,always treated me very well. When Harold owned it,he treated me just as well. I hope the new guy builds the tournament back up to where it used to be. It's kinda hard to compete with the tail end of DCC though, and none of the usual heavies showed. When I heard that Jerry was there,I knew he was stealing.

This tournament and The Rack hold a special place in my heart,I've only spent about 10,000 hours hours there, and live 2 hours away. Tommy D.

At first I was like damn, 25$ entry fee and he made 11 dimes. Wow.(id drive across the country for an entry fee and payouts like that) But the 11 was TOTAL payouts. Not a bad days work either way though.

1st place tournament was $1500; payouts paid out 16 places.
Entire Calcutta paid out over $11,000. For a $25 entry, chance to win lots of $$!

> While I understand the economy may have played a role in the calcutta size, something else is out of place here. I've been to that tournament 14 out of the last 18 years, and have never been there ONCE when the total pot in the FIRST calcutta,on the whole field, wasn't a minimum of 20k,even after the obligatory 10% for expenses. I've seen it over 30k several times. I've seen the 2nd calcutta at damn near 20k,on just 32 players.

Unless something has changed since the Larry Aylor days, the calcutta paid

40%-1st
30%-2nd
20%-split between 3rd and 4th
the last 10% split between 5th and 6th

In the 2nd calcutta, only 4 places were paid, and the split was 40,30,and the remaining 30% split again between 3rd and 4th.

Rick Simpson won this tournament several years back, and pocketed in the neighborhood of 15k.

Did Sam do the calcutta this year? The ONLY person I've ever seen better at running a calcutta was Floyd Baxter back in the day. Tommy D.

the article was written by Paul Frankel and myself, photo by me. ;)
I thought Jerry got a bit of the calcutta money too, but I'm not 100% sure.
