Jimmy Mataya - Great Pool Commentator, or the Greatest of All Time?

the first ones I did with Don Mackey

I am a big fan of Jimmy Mattaya. The combination of Jimmy and keith McCcreedy will be a Riot with lots of one liners from Keith.

Yes, Jimmy is a greatest commentator of All Time.

Yes, he was my first choice every time. We produced 6 shows from my Pool Room with PRIME SPORTS....the first ones I did with Don Mackey and we used his preference, but for the Million Dollar Challenge I insisted on using Jimmy and I'm very glad, he did a fantastic job. Hopefully we can do more events in the future when we "rack up" another schedule of televised events.

I guess I'm in the minority.

I have an accu-stats DVD with him and Danny DiLiberto doing the commentary. I keep the sound off when I watch it.

Guess it depends.

If I am trying to learn, which is usually the case. I like Billy I, Danny D or Joey and his guest partners.

When I heard Jimmy Mataya, I didnt learn much other than he thinks he might be the greatest of all time.... To me, his schtick gets old pretty quick.

The other thing I have noticed on youtube and streams is the "lets put someone in the booth", and it as noted about like two guys in the stands talking over much of nothing. It is neither funny or educational and I think it is more of a distraction than anything else.

My favorite duo of all time has to be Grady Matthews and Billy Incardona. Frankly, I didnt know how truly great they were until Grady was gone. That magic when the two were perfect together happens seldom, and even more seldom in the pool world. I have heard Billy, without Grady, and while still the best currently, it isnt what it was when he had the Professor in the booth with him.

Best of rolls,

Ken

Apparently, it is a sensitive topic about commentators. I can remember Grady having strong feelings about wanting to be included in various projects. Everybody has their favorites, I guess. Each person brings something unique to the table. I guess I like a variety. :)

Jim Rempe rarely commentated, but when he did, I really liked his commentary.

I agree. A great player and great in the booth. Perhaps a little forgotten about by some from time to time when he shouldn't be. Whenever I break out my copy of the Earl Efren Z shot match at the Sands it's always nice to hear Jim Rempe on the commentary.

Jimmy wouldn't be good on Accu-Stats,

Yes, Jimmy wouldn't be good on Accu-Stats, he's best suited for ESPN or FOX SPORTS......it would be like having Howard Cosell on streaming video.....he needs a bigger stage.
