Hello Mike, Early Guffy cues had Burton Spain Forearms. Why John quite making cues, I have no idea but, today he will not even repair older cues that he built. John made some real nice cues, I have a had 2 or 3 over the years, and I wished I had kept them all. There are two variieties of Guffy cues thos ethat rae signed on the forearm, and those that have Guffy engraved in the butt cap. The models with guffy engraved in the Butt cap were to my knowledge production models are not worth much. I do not even think John made the cues with engraved butt caps, but I do not know who made them.

I have had 2 Guffey cues and, regretfully, sold them both. I was told, I forgot by whom, that his production cues were made by McDermott and had a gold JG stamped on them. I had one of those and vividly remembering it had a very pleasant hit.

I met John in Oklahoma several years back, visited at his home and bought some of his cues for resale.I liked the cues and John.I would say you probably have a pretty good cue.I seem to remember he was written up in SNAP magazine or something like it,so he attracted more than just limited local interest. Lets hope to see John come back to pool for our good and wish him well in his new work

John Guffey is one of the best cuemakers alive. Unfortunately for the pool world he quit.

He did have a line for a short time that was made to his specs by a very well known and established cue manufacturer.

Banks, I thought that John told me his cues were made by Viking. However it has been so long ago since that covnersation with John that I honestly cannot remember.

Guffeys made by John are one of the few cues that I would still collect solely for their hit.

Here's a Guffey I had with Spain points. The forearm is now on a James White conversion, but it was a great hitting stick with the Guffey butt...

I had a JG cue one time.
I think they were made by Viking b/c of the plastic veneer points.

Where can I find more details on John Guffy cues? Joint types, length, sources for blanks, aesthetic stylings, and pictures of examples of John Guffy cues?

I have a John Guffy hustler as we call them around here, (sneakypete) and it is the best hitting cue i have ever owned. I bought it from John, at his house in Edmond Okla in the early 90's. I know several very good players in oklahoma who use theirs regularly and swear by them. To my knowledge John is still in the Okla city area working at a large furnature store and will not build anymore cues. At least thats the word around here.

Mostly doing research, looking to know more about him and the cues he has built.

John Guffey made very nice cues, and were available in a variety of materials, including ebony and birdseye maple, with inlays of ivory and mother of peal. Most of John's cues were made with 4, 6 or eight points, generally with veneers, or with decorative "points." Most Guffeys had a 3/8X10 wood-to-wood joint, but ivory joint collars were available. He also made a few cues with a stainless joint and smaller pin. (There is one pictured below). The points were also available with a variety of inlays. Blanks were generally made by John or Prather, although John sold a number of cues with Burton Spain blanks. The Spain cues are pretty rare. Although I believe all the Spain blanks have six points, not all of Johns six point cues were made with Spain blanks.

Butts were plain, inlaid wood windows, or with wood windows. Every Guffey I've ever hit with hits great, but his "signature" shaft taper is not to everyone's liking, as they are not stiff hitting cues.

There are examples of Guffey cues that are unsigned, signed with his signature on the forearm or butt, or marked with a "John Guffey" decal on the forearm. The latest Guffey that I've seen was signed in 2006, and was for sale in Japan. I spoke to John in 2004 and he didn't seem inclined to make any cues, so the '06 example was surprising to see.

Here's a few pics of the '06:

Here are a few of John's cues, circa 1996, note that these are unsigned:

These Guffeys are signed on the butt capp:

My personal Guffeys, my beater player is on the bottom (Note the Guffey decal on the forearm of the top cue):

There seems to be a bit of confusion regarding the "JG" cues that he sold for a time in the mid-to-late nineties. These cues were not made by John, but by Viking, to his specifications. "JG" cues were available with no points or with 3 points. These were his "low line" cues.

Here are the "JG" cues, circa 1997:

Unsigned cues, cues with his signature, or cues marked "John Guffey" are all hand-made custom cues. Cues marked "JG" were made to John's specifications by Viking.

Guffey cues

I have owned a John Guffey cue that had a 4-point Spain blank. Not all of theme were 6 point. Was told that many of the Spain/Guffey cues also had Spain butt sleeves not merely Spain points. Something to think about before your destroy one of these cues for a high end conversion!
