John Guffey made very nice cues, and were available in a variety of materials, including ebony and birdseye maple, with inlays of ivory and mother of peal. Most of John's cues were made with 4, 6 or eight points, generally with veneers, or with decorative "points." Most Guffeys had a 3/8X10 wood-to-wood joint, but ivory joint collars were available. He also made a few cues with a stainless joint and smaller pin. (There is one pictured below). The points were also available with a variety of inlays. Blanks were generally made by John or Prather, although John sold a number of cues with Burton Spain blanks. The Spain cues are pretty rare. Although I believe all the Spain blanks have six points, not all of Johns six point cues were made with Spain blanks.
Butts were plain, inlaid wood windows, or with wood windows. Every Guffey I've ever hit with hits great, but his "signature" shaft taper is not to everyone's liking, as they are not stiff hitting cues.
There are examples of Guffey cues that are unsigned, signed with his signature on the forearm or butt, or marked with a "John Guffey" decal on the forearm. The latest Guffey that I've seen was signed in 2006, and was for sale in Japan. I spoke to John in 2004 and he didn't seem inclined to make any cues, so the '06 example was surprising to see.
Here's a few pics of the '06:
Here are a few of John's cues, circa 1996, note that these are unsigned:
These Guffeys are signed on the butt capp:
My personal Guffeys, my beater player is on the bottom (Note the Guffey decal on the forearm of the top cue):
There seems to be a bit of confusion regarding the "JG" cues that he sold for a time in the mid-to-late nineties. These cues were not made by John, but by Viking, to his specifications. "JG" cues were available with no points or with 3 points. These were his "low line" cues.
Here are the "JG" cues, circa 1997:
Unsigned cues, cues with his signature, or cues marked "John Guffey" are all hand-made custom cues. Cues marked "JG" were made to John's specifications by Viking.
