John Morra plays left handed now

Un-be-liev-a-ble

I am watching John play Warren Kiamco now at he $7000 Added Amarillo Slim's Joe Soliz Open 9-Ball.

And he has switched from playing right handed to left handed

He was having issues with his shoulder because he played so left eye dominant and kept his cue way off to his left hand side.

He has been playing left handed the last couple of months now.

Old right handed

New left handed

Terry when I was watching that this weekend I had to pick my chin up off the floor! For John to be able to shoot that well left-handed is truly mind-boggling to me. Hoping I don't draw him too early (or at all) next week at the Houston Open 9Ball.......Wow that kid can play. He was nice enough to take a picture with me last year.........

Hard to believe someone can play so well with either hand.
A lot of A-level players shoot well with either hand, but
Not at this level.

Will

I feel bad for him. Morra was playing great right handed before his injury/ailment. It is very doubtful he could ever reach the same level left handed

How did he get injured? I remember him taking a hiatus but I didn't know he was injured.

Based on my experience I would say it is possible to become adept at using your off hand ....especially if you have an injury.

Several years ago I sustained an injury where I could not use my right hand ( right handed ) for anything for 6 months. I had to so everything with my left hand.

I was left with 30 % disability in my right hand so i still use my left for most everything. The only 2 things I never really tried to do left handed was write and shoot pool. Even before my injury I sometimes shot off handed in certain situations where the shot was hard to reach right handed.

Watching John play live now at the Texas Open.

To be totally honest i really can't tell much difference from him shooting right handed.

He has an almost identical stoke with both hands same long pause with his back swing and everything

Mike Sigel plays Left-handed, but is really Right-handed! He said, that he shot Lefty because his Teacher was a Lefty, and he imitated him. Efren plays great Lefty, too.

I am a lefty Pool shooter, but I always played Baseball, Football, Bowling, and Basketball right-handed. I eat, write, play a Guitar, eat as a Lefty! My Mom was an identical Twin, and out of four Boys, two of us were Leftties, and two Righties. I even shot my BB Guns and real firearms as a Righty, but I never attempted to shoot as a Righty in Pool, when I first picked up a Cue. I shoot a little bit with my Right hand, but only for easy closeup shots, or to mess around.

I saw on some comments when this was first reported a few months back that John had always played Snooker left handed, but Pool right handed. Not to diminish his current feat of switching hands in pool, but if this is true, he might have 20 years of left handed "snooker" experience, before switching pool to left handed as well. Can anyone that knows him confirm or add to this?

I know this thread is about six months old, but I've been working on my photos from Derby City a couple weeks ago, and seeing a few of Morra caught my attention. OK, I am definitely neither a champion nor an instructor, I'm jusst a pool-playing photographer lol. But honestly I don't get the issue with shooting right handed as a left-eye dominant. Your bridge hand is your leading hand and shooting righty it means you are leading with your left hand, and standing at the table generally with your body slightly angled toward your cue, which to me NATURALLY means you lead with your left eye towards the shot. I just got new glasses, and at my normal shooting angle, if I relied more on my right eye, as a right handed person, it would be awkward, not the other way around!

Of course for John Morra it might be something very specific about his stance and neck position that was the issue shooting right handed. I am not addressing that because I can't lol. I'm just wondering about the cross dominant stance in general.

But anyway, here is John in 2008 shooting right handed, but appearing to be aligned with his left eye over the cue. It seems like his chin is often lower than his cue, so he must have to decide which side of the cue his chin is going, and consequently which eye is over the cue:

Here he is in 2012 still right handed and appearing to be shooting with his right eye over the cue. Now that really looks awkward to me!

And here in 2015 using the bridge, still shooting right-handed, but definitely appearing to align below his left eye.

And oh by the way, here is Morra shooting lefty in 2013!!

Incidentally, here is Neils shooting over his right eye, and then appearing to be shooting over his left eye lol.

On second thought, Neils had just finished his stroke, so he was probably turning his head so nix that thought about shooting under his left eye.

Feijen has poor eyesight with his left eye which is why he puts the cue under the right eye. He also has as straight a stroke as you will find.
