I know John has been around for some time now, but he seems to just miss getting there at most tournaments. To me he looks like he did when he first came on the scene...bring it. I think I see that in him again in the last year or so. I feel he's ready for some big wins. Johnnyt

I agree.....the World 8 ball championships are going to be on his home court, I'd love to see him have a good showing there.

There are some players in any sport that never quite reach the likes of their top-tier champion contemporaries. They're called "second-tier" professionals.

Think:
Patrick Ewing (second-tier) v. Michael Jordan (top-tier)
Sergio Garcia (second-tier) v. Tiger Woods (top-tier)
Anna Kournikova (second-tier v. Venus Williams (top-tier)

I think John is a great player and seems like a great person (on and off the table)
but he will never be a top-tier player. IMO he doesn't have that killer instinct necessary
to get to the top and stay there (at least for any time of consequence).

That's life. Any expectations of any "big wins" by JM is purely wishful thinking.
Harsh but most likely true. JM will peak at under Corey Deuel speed.

Do you mind if I borrow your crystal ball? I want to be able to predict the future too.

John has won a lot of tournaments, including some big ones. He has a DCC title under his belt among others, beating Shane in the finals. He fears no one and everyone is leery about playing him. I watched him spank some of the young guns from the Philippines in Vegas last year. John ain't no joke! I'd take him over Corey playing 9-Ball or Ten Ball in a heartbeat right now! If they play I will take all bets.

P.S. Whoever said he doesn't have a killer instinct is seriously misinformed.

I'm not sure about this..,

"Patrick Ewing (second-tier) v. Michael Jordan (top-tier)"

Patrick Ewing never got a ring, but he was far from second tier! He just played for DISFUNCTIONAL franchise...,

John Morra, I'm not sure about him either. I think there are 20 young guys that play better then him, but I do think he is close.

OK Keyboard dummies...Sir Jay has spoken and as usual he's correct.

All BS aside John is not backing up and will knock off a US Open or other "big one" soon enough. I think both Oscar and John have brought up their professionalism to new heights. It's a shame the sport can't provide them them better compensation.

If he had a US passport I would make an argument for him being on Mosconi Cup.

I love his game. I think he is an awesome player.

Venus Williams. Lmao
We both know Serena is the Alpha of that family.

Let's be real, there are no Michael Jordan's or Tiger Woods in the pool world. On any given day Morra can beat anyone in the world top 10

Great player

John is definitely a great player and has had big wins over the years. I believe his game has elevated over the last 2 years and seems to be playing better lately staying more focused. The top tier statement for me is somewhat accurate. I believe it is easy in pocket billiards to look at particular players and say they are just as good as the top players in the sport. Because we see them getting out the same and pocketing the balls the same. What the top level players have is a super tough mental game and deep desire to win. This is what separates them from the rest of the field. I do believe he is capable and will win a major title lets face it we have multiple players who have won the U.S. OPEN who are not and never will be top tier players.

storke...The difference between 1st and 2nd is a 'microdot'. John Morra is a top tier player, who also happens to use a perfect SPF stroke routine. John has won some big events (like Jay said...Derby City is full of killers), and placed 2nd in several others.

Hmmmm

Well that micro dot that you refer to is the same 5-10 players that usually get there for the title so it might be bigger than you perceive. He is without doubt a great player who is capable of winning any event he enters. That being said it doesn't seem to happen he has won the derby city bank pool and has other high finishes and wins to his credit. As to my assessment he isn't in the top tier of pool players is simple if gambling with Darren, Shane, Alex, Shaw, Orcullo, he would be a underdog and you would have little trouble getting odds on your bet of 2 to 1.

Scott, I think that very thing every time I see him play.

It remains to be seen if he gets over the small hump that keeps him from winning consistently. I think that both he and Oscar are both tempering their game.

Storke, does that post mean that John is 6th? Just joshing.

Jayson Shaw is a monster but I'm not sure he has the character to be a Champion. Too much whining. But darn he shoots straight and is certainly not lacking in confidence.

John's fundamentals are awesome but he just makes that critical mistake along the way. But fewer and fewer and I think he is just about there. Credit to the sport.

Now your are talking about gambling, not tournaments. This thread is about him winning big tournament titles in the future, not gambling.

Jayson Shaw is a Champion, and a multiple defending champion of the same event (that many of the other top pro players attend each year). What was that annual tournament that he won like 3 years (?) in a row? I forget, but I am pretty sure that I heard that he won it 3 times in a row.

I'd like to know who those 20 young guys are. I sure haven't seen them. I'm having trouble thinking of ONE young guy who I would pick in a match over John, let alone 20. Maybe Justin Bergman or Jayson Shaw are small favorites over him, but not by much. I guarantee you they would play even. John Morra does not get weight from anyone this side of Dennis Orcollo. I doubt that even the big guns would give him any more than the 9 in Ten Ball, if that!

I will take John at 2-1 any time he is playing any one of the above in any match, or for that matter, anyone else you can think of.
Just to put a cap on this, make no mistake about it, John Morra is a world class player. The only guy in Canada favored over him is Alex.

Jay your experience and knowledge of top level pool cannot be questioned! I'm still having a hard time believing you like John even getting 2 to 1 over lets say Orcullo. If that is your stance I respect it. I also believe John to be a great player there are just a handful of players that play better under the pressure. I also would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your contribution to this forum your insight and knowledge have been remarkable.

True

You are correct and I feel he can and will win a major tournament in the future. I have always enjoyed watching him play and admire his demeanor while at the table. He has the skill level to beat anyone. The top 100 players in the world all possess tremendous skill, but we don't see a bunch of different names crowned as champions. Seems only a select few with some others sprinkled in. This is because it is not only the ability to play well but also how strong mentally the player is and the consistency of the select few is just a little bit better.
