John Schmidt runs 820

Watched till 80, 90. Classic patterns and moves. Took "plants" inside the stack early, with impeccable results. Watching the patterns I forgot about the buckets.
Reminiscent of Sigel and maybe Mosconi sense. ( I've seen Sigel ) Gotta take small bites on this. Should be a good watch.

This was a pretty ballsy shot to continue the run, but with pockets like those, anything is possible lol.

“I am what I am, and that’s all that I am”. I do love to gamble though, and I like to bet it up a bit.

It's not harder for the top pros, they just don't want to dedicate that much time for something meaningless.

If someone with a lot of money paid Joshua Filler to dedicate a few months on straight pool, I can see him easily beating the highest run.

There is no incentive for a top pro to attempt this, besides love for straight pool.

It didn't elevate Jason's career and it won't do anything for Schmidt.

I would think you could count on your thumbs the number of current players
besides John and Jason that could break 800.
Have you watched either of their high runs?
There are literally dozens of key turning points they faced. And conquered. Simply amazing.

Can someone with more technical prowess slow mo that last shot skid?
It looks like he just punted it before being fully set up on the shot.
Hard to see the ball turning at regular speed.

Fantastic run BTW.
Now I don't feel bad for not putting up any decent runs whatsoever on crappy diamonds with old cloth and tight pockets.

Need to go find some bucket GCs

i did not see much skid although it may have. but like said hit kind of slow and lazy. and not at the wide part of the pocket. but i guess tough luck.
all good things come to and end and same with the wildwood weed.

My lifetime high run is 70 something. I think 72. That’ll never happen again, and that’s with no pressure and no camera. I can understand the mental focus it takes to run multiple hundreds, just thinking about it hurts

I would think you could count on less than one hand the number of current incentives there is for a player to even attempt this, given the time and dedication required to accomplish. I think it has less to do with skills. Jayson doesn't even play straight pool and was able to beat the record. Imagine if someone gave a player like Filler/Shane/Yapp/Ko/Biado/Gorst the incentive needed. Those guys don't miss on buckets.

Less than four hours for 820. That's about Mosconi's pace, which was pretty quick, but not quite as fast as Jayson.

I have previously watched a bunch of Shaw’s 832. And this week Schmidt’s 820.

I have also seen many SSOP Bob Keller’s attempts. And the 285 by Filler posted earlier in this thread.

One thing I noticed very quickly was how fast Shaw and Schmidt both played in comparison to the others I mentioned. Really quick pace. Perhaps that’s what is needed to make large runs: less time between shots, less mental exhaustion?

These high runs are often stymied by getting pinned or jammed up, not missing straight in shots. Also, larger pockets also increase the risk of scratching. Sure, ball pocketing is easier, but are some drawbacks as well.

You mean like this almost straight in 10ball that John missed to end his 820 run? He wasn't pinned or jammed up.

I fast forwarded to the last rack to see how it ended. I saw the spread and was thinking what will he possibly miss? It was the easiest shot imaginable. Crazy!!!

I wonder if the new chalk and reduced skids made players TOO relaxed. Me personally, I would have put a bit of left spin on the shot Schmidt missed when hitting it low speed with follow. Low speed, follow, slight cut, is the #1 shot for skid to occur. Even though I too switched to the new lipstick chalks, I still use the same anti-skid spins as the Master Chalk days.

I personally don't think Shane, Yapp, Biado, or Gorst would be able to do it with a 1MM prize on the line. The reason is they are slowish players. I think the only type of player that can realistically run over 500-600-700-800 is Shaw/Filler/Schmidt/Mosconi/etc. Those guys RUN around the table.

I didn't think Schmidt had the ability for 800 as he is below the others in overall game, but he proved me wrong His speed, however, is as fast as that group.
