I was hoping to hear some opinions as well as possibly get educated on Joint pins and collars, and how they play.

I've played in the past with a uniloc joint. It was brass uniloc joint with a stainless steel collar. As well as a stainless Steel joint and stainless steel collar.

One of the nicest hitting cues I've ever played with had a G-10 glass epoxy joint with a ebony wood collar. It was a very responsive hit is the best way I can say it?

In your opinion or experience how do Radials, 3/8x10, 5/16x18, 5/16x14, as well as any of the modified compare?

right now I have cue being made with an Elforyn and Brass Radial joint. I haven't experience elforyn. Based upon research it sounds like it will have the hit that I've been trying to match.
 
the best joint material and pin ?????

there is no best as everyone has a different opinion and everyone feels a cue differently.

in MY opinion the best hitting cues are one piece titlist, so i like full spliced cues with wood joint rings and wood pins.


many ' fad ' pin sizes come and go, but the 1/2 by 8 wood pin has been around for 100 plus years

if i have a customer that insist i use a metal pin, i use the 3/8 by 10 into wood threads, i feel the bigger threads on the pin have more surface area to grip the threads in the shaft.

Hi,

Are you sure that collar was Ebony. It is doubtless a black phoenlic or Juma material. Under a finish it is jet black like good ebony.

Most cue makers will not use wood as a joint collar because of cracking.

This was definitely ebony. It was Macassar ebony with the brown streaks through it. It was a custom, so I'm assuming that the cue maker used the actual wood requested.

Don't get caught up in over analyzing pins and joint materials. There are many great joint materials and it is subjective on how they feel to the player. As for pins.... same thing.... don't go for one of the hyped up bastard pins, stick with a big pin with some what common threads..... 3/8 ........... even the G10 have a nice feel.

Resonance wise, G-10 is just about the best imo.
It works perfectly on heavy forearm cues ( or heavy core wood ) with tight maple handle. The heavy forearm accentuates the resonance of the handle .
Hard lightweight joint collars also helps by not impeding that resonance.
Phenolic, ivory and stag collars are all good to me.
My personal cue has a green G-10 collar. It's ugly, so it'll be popular.
IMO it is the best man made joint collar.

hey, scdiveteam, i guess i have been lucky, i have not i have not had one crack as of yet. and oh yeah i have the wood stabilized before using it for rings

If the G10 pin with ebony collar has been the best in your opinion, why go to Elforyn and brass radial? I hope you went back to the cuemaker that made the G10 :) because disappointment awaits you if not. :)

I don`t have the experience like many of the cuemakers, but from a practical standpoint it seems 3/8x10 or 5/16x14 is by far the most two common pin sizes.
My cues are all 3/8x10, I have two with G-10 pin, 1 with brass, 1 with aluminum and one with stainless steel pin, they are all the 3/8x10 FB type.
Rick (esoteric cues) has a really big pin in his cues, i believe it`s 3/8x14.
That`s something i really would like to try.

The 3/8-14 pin is the same size as a 3/8-10 pin.... just has more threads per inch......
