I have been looking for a cheap Joss West for a little bit of time now. I see this one on Ebay the other day. http://cgi.ebay.com/Joss-West-JW-2-...ryZ95098QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I contacted the guy asking for pictures of the JW symbol. He said he could not add anymore pictures on the auction without ending it and restarting it.

From there, I asked him to email pictures of it to my email address. He said he worked for the busiest pawn shop in Colorado and that they didn't have time to take the pictures.

I responded by saying that you must be extremely busy 24 hours a day and good luck with the sale.

Just thought I would try to get some feedback on here about the auction. It very well could be a JW, but I have some doubts. Thank you for your help.

If it is in Denver, I have a buddy who may be able to go to the store and take pics, but can't commit him yet. Let me know if you need any assistance.

Jw

I have added numerous pictures to auctions before as people as questions and want things clarified. It also helps prevent questions in the long run. I would still be interested in the cue if it was as described and was a JW. Thanks for your help.

It looks more like a Joss East to me. Butt cap has finish sprayed over it. Stroud uses Delrin, which is whiter and finish won't stick to it.

You can only add so many pictures I think is the problem. He already has quite a few... Sounds fishy though.

My Opinion

I saw that auction too, and I believe it is a Joss by Dan Janes. If he doesn't provide a picture of the JW I would definately stay clear of the cue. Based on the fact that he hasn't provided the JW picture in the initial set of pictures already has me not bidding on the cue. If he's that busy he can't take the picture and email it to you he would be too busy for me to do business with him. Besides if you win the auction he may be "too busy" to ship it out to you in a reasonable amount of time as well. Think about that.

And I think way to busy to help you if you had a problem with what he sent you, for example you open the box and what he sent is not a Joss West, which seems pretty likely.

Point depth and butt dimensions make me think it is a JW butt, but that certainly looks like a newer JE shaft.

Joss West Cue

The only joints Stroud used when he had the J with a sideways W which this sounds like were a piloted 5/16 x 14 Acme thread (which will not fit a regular 5/16 x 14 shaft) and a piloted 5/16 x 18 like Meucci used. That said, all his shafts that I have owned were all linen phenolic at the joint and this one looks like plastic...

He also used 3/8-10 but much less frequently. http://www.cueaddicts.com/newcues.htm

Auction Looks Fake

Guy has never sold a cue before. Looks like hijacked account and owner doesn't know it. Here's how I would prove it: Enter bid at $350 (or whatever it doesn't matter). Ask eBay for his phone number - procedure explained here: http://pages.ebay.com/help/tp/contacting-members.html#contact

Call the guy up. When he says "No shit? A cue? Moi?" tell him he is sharing his account with a crook. Then report auction to eBay as fraudulent.

Then we can lay odds on whether or not eBay takes the fraudulent auction down or admonishes you on how to avoid scams.

As it turns out, this guy is a pretty reputable eBay seller who didn't know he could add pics. He has now added a pic (which also proves he has the cue in his possession) and what he has is what he said it was. That's a nice old Joss West.

I just talked to the guy at the pawn shop. He has the cue right there. It's a couple of miles from my house in Colorado Springs. I thought I might run over there and take a look. I have a JW of my own but I am not an expert on cues. Is there anything I should look at or for? He said he will not end the auction early. He also said he got it from another pawn shop in the Springs. I will go over there Sat about 10AM. PM me with any questions. I will compare it to mine as far as butt size and pin and straightness and how the cue fits together. The shaft joints' pilot looks like it might not be the same as mine(just from the pic) but I'll see it tomorrow. I'll report what I find out tomorrow.

I visited the Joss West that is on Ebay

I went and saw the Joss West and here is what I saw in comparing it to my JW. Mine was built in 83/84.

This cue is old and has been used but not abused.
Bumper looks the same.
Butt is same length and width(naked eye).
Irish linen is old but not frayed in fact it is in fairly good condition. Looks like it was green spec.
Shaft and butt fits together snuggly. Looks like stainless steel joint.
Pin looks the same in length and width.
Looks straight and apart. Very very little bow when rolled together.
Ferrule is same length, but whiter that mine. It is very used with blue marks on it.
His shaft fit on my butt snuggly(no jokes please:>)
My shafts(3, 5/16x14) did not fit on his butt snuggly(do I have to repeat myself). All three of them went in a different number of turns. Maximum 4 to 5 turns only.
My joint protectors fit on his shaft.
The piloted part of the his shaft did not protrude as much as mine does.
The sideways ?W? was worn and the points on the ?W? seemed to be a little shorter than mine. I don?t know if it was worn off or what.

In talking with the pawn shop they said that there were two more JWs on their way for comparison. He said he felt better about the authenticity after comparing it with mine. He also said that if for some reason he would find out it was not authentic he would immediately halt the auction. Pers opinion is he seems like an good guy to do business with. He sold Joss hustler/sneaky pete cue on Ebay about a year ago. Hope this helps someone.

Bump

A bump just because there seem to be some questions about this cue.

Thank you for your help in looking at the cue. I will see how the auction goes and I might just own it. Thanks again.

There are 3 issues for me, which will prevent me from buying this:

1) The JW logo is different. Worn is fine, but shorter points? WTF?
2) Buttcap is not Delrin?
3) Shaft pilot - never seen that style insert on an early JW.

So it's possible that this is a great deal for someone, but for me:

"If there's any doubt, there is no doubt"
