Jules Patterson (EDC) Cue and Randy Mobley Shop Experience

Here goes my experience with Randy Mobley and Jules Patterson. Of all the cue makers I have met, Randy and Jules are amongst the nicest and most welcoming. Throughout my visit, they really made sure I understood their methods for cue making and answered any questions I had to the best of their abilities. Also, since this was the first shop I’ve been in, it was a very cool experience.

As an owner of Mobley playing and breaking cue, I am fully aware of its playability and quality. Randy has a tremendous attention to detail. He triple checks his work to see if there are any defects. If there were any defects, he would re-do the whole step over. I know because I’ve seen this in person. Heck he might even do the whole cue over, that’s how much he cares about his work. I saw cues in the shop that were 80-90% complete but had to be scrapped because it wasn’t up to his standards (It could have just been a small imperfection on a veneer. That’s how strict he is with his work. As Jules is his student, he has to go through the same level of quality control. It’s boot camp all over for him.

Randy’s shaft wood selection is very meticulous. After turning them down little by little many times, he would keep it in a room where he maintains the perfect mixture of heat and humidity to test the woods. He then throws away the shafts that are warped, which are, as he would say most of them (That’s a lot of good shaft wood being thrown away). Then he pairs them by weight. After he pairs by them weight, he would pair them by grains. To top that off, he then pairs them by color. If you think that’s enough for you. Well… It isn’t for Randy. He then pairs them by sound. He would drop them on concrete to match the sound.

For all of you who don’t know who Jules is. He’s learning and producing cues under Randy Mobley and his shop. As a loyal fan of Mobley, I trust that his student’s cues will be just as good if not better. Which is why, I bought one for support and out of curiosity. The choice was a good one. I haven’t hit with a cue that shot this straight and consistent in a while. The cues also got A TON of life in it... Everyone who picks it up feels the power transfer it has to offer. The quality of the woods and construction is top tier, but of course there will always be room for improvement. With his talent, I wouldn’t be surprised if he made it to top tier in a few years. I expect him to do big things. His cues are mostly Plain Jane when compared to the other cues because that’s just his motto (Everyday Carry – EDC). I mean… how many times have we bought cues that were so fancy, we held our stroke back while shooting with them? How many times have we gotten a refinish because we have a stylish looking bumperless cue that got scuffed? How many times have we placed the cue on the table like it’s a museum piece because it had too many inlays to get a scratch from the chalk dust? I know I have countless times… Jules cues are perfect for your everyday essentials and it is all you need to play jam up pool. Almost forgot to mention that he really makes sure the cue shoots dead straight before he hands it to his customers. His goal is to make the best hitting cue so people will buy it and USE IT!

Very nice and I know every one will love it.
I have two, one with steel joint and one with ivory over steel joint:p:thumbup:
Enjoy your table time with.
Ralf

I recently bought an EDC cue and it is great .

I really like your design as well. Great veneers, wrap and wood combo!

Thanks for sharing your experience and hopefully Jules continues on the path to cue making greatness!

The Future Bodes Well For Jules

Jules shows a lot of promise and getting to learn from a great cue-maker/mentor like Randy is just an incredible opportunity......look forward to seeing more from EDC.

In reply to your question that was likely intended as rhetorical...." how many times have we bought cues that were so fancy, we held our stroke back while shooting with them?".
The simple answer, at least for me, is never; it hasn't happened & likely never would. It's just the opposite; put a $14k Barry S. in my hands & I'm still not holding anything back.

The nicer the pool cue, the harder I try to excel......it's the same way with guns for me.....the nice the weapon, the harder I try to excel in my performance.
Maybe it's the subliminal effect of owning a fancy custom & trying to justify to yourself why you spent so much for the cue.......you don't want to shoot like a duck.

The bottom-line is when you spend a lot of moola on a fancy design custom or big name cue-maker's player design, I think you need the game to justify the expenditure.
Otherwise you just look like some poor lost soul trying to garnish attention by what's in their hands more than how they perform with the pool cue...........JMO.

That cup is pretty. I'm actually having a Brazilian Rosewood & blue vaneers getting made for me too. Glad I got to see yours beforehand, makes me feel I made the right decision.

Serious question and I hope it isn't taken the wrong way. These cues look great, exactly my style of simple 4pnt playing cues. They seem fairly expensive for such simple cues from a new builder however. Is it the Mobley connection and the promise of quality that it implies that makes them worth the ask?

Not knocking them at all as I've seen some I would love to own (this one included!) and they do look to be incredibly well built cues from what I can see in pictures. Just trying to learn more about them as I really find them catching my eye!

Beautiful cue Sir! I think Jules will be at the top of the pack in the near future.
Love the way they hit, and clean work.
Also like his attitude on Every Day Carry, simple cues to play every day.
Didn't hurt to have elite maker Randy Mobley as a friend and mentor!
Nice pick up, enjoy.

Randy and Jules make one hell of a team....Randy is like a genius at cuemaking and Jules is what any cuemaker would want as a protege or student....Jules has the talent, drive and enthusiasm to be a top notch cuemaker.

I have first hand seen the work Jules is doing and it is remarkable.

Randy is sensi and Jules is Grasshopper

Big Daddy

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. Does anyone have Jules' contact info? I recently got one of his cues, and this is perhaps the finest playing cue I have ever hit with. I would like to get in touch with him about another cue.

Don't apologize for bringing this thread back to life so I could see this cue !! It is awesome, and I would truly like to own it .

i just had my first cue of his
it was very nice but i let it go to someone who seemed very excited

i had a group of great playing cues and couldn't decide which one to play

it was no reflection on the cue that i sold it
as a matter of fact ,it was probably an indication that the cues are
really good

i usually live to regret selling the nice ones

Thanks for selling it to me, Dean ;)
You told me I'd like it. Understatement. I love the cue.

I'm hoping to get Jules to build me a Phantom, like the Scruggs famous "Phantom" design. The cue I have now has some ivory in it. I want a cue that I can take across the border. I'm hoping Jules could knock one out in the next year or so.

Very nice cue Sir! I would say that baby mosdef has her blue jeans on! ;)

In talking to Todd Carpenter, John Showman and Dennis Searing at Derby this year.....

Sounded like Jules was no longer building cues. Cant remember who told me from above, but I specifically asked that question.

Did he have a shop or only made cues at Mobley's shop?
