Here goes my experience with Randy Mobley and Jules Patterson. Of all the cue makers I have met, Randy and Jules are amongst the nicest and most welcoming. Throughout my visit, they really made sure I understood their methods for cue making and answered any questions I had to the best of their abilities. Also, since this was the first shop I’ve been in, it was a very cool experience.
As an owner of Mobley playing and breaking cue, I am fully aware of its playability and quality. Randy has a tremendous attention to detail. He triple checks his work to see if there are any defects. If there were any defects, he would re-do the whole step over. I know because I’ve seen this in person. Heck he might even do the whole cue over, that’s how much he cares about his work. I saw cues in the shop that were 80-90% complete but had to be scrapped because it wasn’t up to his standards (It could have just been a small imperfection on a veneer. That’s how strict he is with his work. As Jules is his student, he has to go through the same level of quality control. It’s boot camp all over for him.
Randy’s shaft wood selection is very meticulous. After turning them down little by little many times, he would keep it in a room where he maintains the perfect mixture of heat and humidity to test the woods. He then throws away the shafts that are warped, which are, as he would say most of them (That’s a lot of good shaft wood being thrown away). Then he pairs them by weight. After he pairs by them weight, he would pair them by grains. To top that off, he then pairs them by color. If you think that’s enough for you. Well… It isn’t for Randy. He then pairs them by sound. He would drop them on concrete to match the sound.
For all of you who don’t know who Jules is. He’s learning and producing cues under Randy Mobley and his shop. As a loyal fan of Mobley, I trust that his student’s cues will be just as good if not better. Which is why, I bought one for support and out of curiosity. The choice was a good one. I haven’t hit with a cue that shot this straight and consistent in a while. The cues also got A TON of life in it... Everyone who picks it up feels the power transfer it has to offer. The quality of the woods and construction is top tier, but of course there will always be room for improvement. With his talent, I wouldn’t be surprised if he made it to top tier in a few years. I expect him to do big things. His cues are mostly Plain Jane when compared to the other cues because that’s just his motto (Everyday Carry – EDC). I mean… how many times have we bought cues that were so fancy, we held our stroke back while shooting with them? How many times have we gotten a refinish because we have a stylish looking bumperless cue that got scuffed? How many times have we placed the cue on the table like it’s a museum piece because it had too many inlays to get a scratch from the chalk dust? I know I have countless times… Jules cues are perfect for your everyday essentials and it is all you need to play jam up pool. Almost forgot to mention that he really makes sure the cue shoots dead straight before he hands it to his customers. His goal is to make the best hitting cue so people will buy it and USE IT!
