Hey Gang,

It was a slow Monday aftrenoon, just four hours into the double shift I was working at Drexline Billiards. I had just mentioned to Bob Maidoff the owner that I had read on AZ that Danny B. had recently run off a 240+.

Well that must have inspired Bob because just after that he proceeded to run balls for aprox. two and a half hours, unfortunatley we din't start counting the racks until six or seven racks into the run. But I counted fifteen after we realized that we where watching something special.
Talk about nice patterns !
300+ just like that ! Its a shame we din't get an exact count.:(

Thanks,

Doc

Its' a shame you guys didn't have a video camera!

Anybody else here interested in putting together a Maidhof VS Barouty TAR style 14.1 matchup?

We can do this!

Philly and Jersey are close togther - find neutral ground - perhaps at Mickey Scott's room... I'm sure he won't argue about that.

TAR - I see some money to be made here...

Spiderwebbcomm - we'd need your help with this - I'll go up there to do the commentary - but I want Steve Lipsky in the booth with me!

I'm in - anybody else?

I can't speak for Mickey personally but I am guessing he would love to hold this matchup. His room D & D Family Billiards has quite a few straight pool enthusiats as well. If this happens I will be there to support and help out if needed. Great idea for sure. Keep us posted if this develops.

Thanks

Kevin

I'm all over it!!!! I would love to see this great game continue to get more and more exposure. I'ts hard to believe that I still run into people that have never heard, seen, or played this wonderful game. It would be great if it could regain even 10% of its former glory. This match would be a good way to show others this great game. It would also be nice if we could get some matchups from Grady, Hopkins, Danny D, even Sigel. I just love watching these guys pot balls!

Danny and Bob met in the finals in the Pete Sinkler Invitational held at Mickey's place in 2006.

It looks as if somebody made the finals of The Sinkler 3 years in a row...
Mr. Barouty won in 2005 and 2006 - finsished 2nd to Danny Harriman in 2007. The event was not held this year due to Pete's health.

Wow.

David doesn't say very much these days, but it looks like he can sure get things done.

Sounds like a great match.

Lets make it happen

I'll talk to Bob tomorrow, sounds like a good idea to me too. These two are
always a good match-up, they both play the game the right way if you
know what I mean.

I'am sure Steve will talk Danny about it and I'll talk to Bob.
Lets see if TAR has any interest:cool:
JCIN are you reading this?

I'll try to report back tomorrow night.

Say, just a thought here guys....don't forget about the great arena area Pat Fleming has set up at Bill Haley's room, Comet Billiards. You sure wouldn't want for a more quality video result. :) Give Pat a call, I'm sure he would be happy to work with anyone on its use.

I was thinking the same thing. I've been to the arena and it's perfect for this sort of thing -- all set up and ready to go.

I am of the belief that every pool room should have a camera built into the ceiling over the main table.

With todays technology, your not dealing with film anymore. Just memory.

So that whenever there is a tournament, or someone gambling, or anything going on that table, you can just hit record, and see if you catch something special.
If you don't, you just hit erase, and wait till the next time.

You never know what you might get.

Why risk missing anything in the first place.

Only good can come of it.

As for Bob, i'll be there bright and early to bust his stones, call him a hack and tell him that he stinks :D only to have him laugh at me when i miss like 3 break shots in a row.

Funny thing is, i was in there like a couple of hours before, talking about how Ortman was a maniac in the link i posted in the "Gross" thread, and he mentioned that Ortman KNOWS the game, and then we talked about who's game we liked and who's we didn't, and then we were critiquing my game a little, when he said, and i quote, "This game's a joke once you learn the patterns"

And then he goes and does something like that.

Figures.

Congrats Bob! I'm definitely in for anything like this, Blackjack...

If he's interested, I recommend getting Chris Lynch to take my place. Chris did the commentary for an AccuStats tape of Jimmy Rempe, if I remember correctly (can't remember who he was playing though), and his insight was STELLAR. If anyone on this board doesn't have this tape, they should get it. That's how good he is.

Danny and I are going to be doing a ton of commentary for our upcoming venture, so people are going to get sick of my voice anyway. LOL.

Oh I see... you're backing out on me...

Ok, Steve... you expect the rest of us to listen to Springsteen until our ears bleed, but you have enough of a heart to spare us the extra few hours of your stellar, in-depth commentary on straight pool. What a guy!

LOL

It would be an honor to have Chris Lynch involved in this. I met Chris a few years ago at a UPA event (I believe he was playing at the table next to me. He came up and introduced himself to me - very nice person, and a great player! I have heard his commentary - its Jimmy Rempe Vs Oliver Ortmann and it is one of the favorites in my collection.

Just something to keep in mind: If we package this the same way straight pool has been packaged for years, nobody will pay any attention to it at all. As purists, we can watch 14.1 all day, BUT, we need to reel in the people that don't see the beauty. They can't see the beauty because the beauty is not being presented. To capture their attention we need to focus on what drew our attention to the game.

We need to realize that we MUST package the game differently and more creatively. Straight pool is a beautiful game - it just needs that little extra push to make it spread like wildfire to the masses.

Just something to think about.

If you have Pat's ear, tell him that we have a few ideas that will generate a lot of interest in straight pool - adding that creative edge that it so desperately needs.

...I had skin like leather, and the diamond hard look of a cobra...

I think I could set this up with a nice digital cam corder, long AV cables to a quiet area, three mics, a few hotdogs and a case of cold beer.

If TAR is in, I'll help them out. If they can't make the trip, I'll do it and send the raw video file to them anyways (gotta support TAR, ya know?).

TAR could give me the FME info and I could do live (as a humble TAR field reporter, hahaha) or they could make a DVD.

I'm a big Maidoff fan. I love how he snaps everything in with conviction. It'll be a super match between the two.

If this happens, I'm in - you guys know that.

Just bring it.

Mickey the houseman at D&D Family Billiards would love to have this match here. We are the 14-1 capital of PA.

Anytime is great with us

Thanks blackjack for thinking of me.

I appreciate the nice comments about the Rempe/Ortmann match I did commentary on in 2000. I can't say for sure that I will be able to spare the time to help out with this project but if I can I would love to. It sounds like fun.

Personally I would like to have Steve in the booth. Maybe the three of us (Blackjack, SL and myself) can take turns which would be interesting.

If a date is made please let me know. Thanks.

Bob's In

I spoke with Bob today at the room and told him about the response to the thread and he says that he up for it.

Dave, I agree with that we need to put our heads together and come up with some fresh ideas that would not only promote our sacred game but also possibly make a few bucks for those involved.

Spidey, I like your idea of you shooting the match for TAR dvd. We all need
to support those guys as much as possible. Call Jcin up and get view on all this.

This will be great 14.1 action !

b.t.w.
Spidey, we actually have spoken at the Expo this year outside of the men's
pro event at the laptop that was posting up the scores, talked about what
else aiming systems
