Just another tobacco thread ...

So to keep this pool related, we'll just keep in mind that this would affect pool rooms. :p

Could the ban on indoor smoking in public places go nationwide - perhaps even worldwide? That's just what the U.N. health agency, the World Health Organization, is recommending:

See Story Here

If it happened there would still be places to play and smoke. Smokey poolrooms are an American Classic. I would probably get acclamated to clean air in the room but I would miss the good old days.

I can only pray for the day this happens. I despise smoking with everything inside me. It's better for everyone's health, and if there is an initial drop in business at places like pool halls, so be it. Once people realize that this is the way things are going to be, they will get used to it. People aren't going to shut themselves in their homes and completely halt all activities just to smoke.

I'd be ok with a ban in all public places but I don't think the world is ready for it.

Sometimes I wonder if smoking as one of those things that eventually will dry up and blow away (not in our lifetime of course). Obviously the idea of sticking a burning plant in your mouth just to look cool is pretty stupid, similar to how chinese women were encouraged to lacquer their teeth to give them an attractive black color.

To me, and to maybe any nonsmoker, it really is frustrating to think about how senseless and harmful it is. We accept something that is very very strange and destructive as normal, because we're accustomed to it.

It's my hope and belief that a thousand years from now people will shake their heads in disbelief at the custom of smoking, the same way we shake our head at people trying to cure diseases with leeches or bind a woman's feet to deform it into a more pleasing shape.

Maybe it's one of those things like alcohol that will never go out of fashion.

Be careful what you wish for.

Some day the world will be rid of anything dangerous, obnoxious, and possibly offensive.

Whoa, deep. "Like... the world will be TOTALLY sterile and boring if we get rid of stupid, destructive health hazards!" But I somehow manage to enjoy a full and rewarding life without having to deal with indoor air pollution.

By all means, please enjoy "living on the edge" with lung cancer or emphysema. Nothing says "I am a free spirit" like yellow teeth and bronchospasms =)

PS to Russ: They still mutilate female genitals in africa too.
Da Poet must feel blessed to be living in interesting times like these.

I applaud the day this happens! I fell sorry for the addicted smokers that cannot seem to break this nasty and unhealthy habit but perhaps a ban is what will help save their lives by forcing them away from the seduction of the money hungry Tobacco Corporation Lobbies :( I certainly know that it will make my pool hobby much more enjoyable and safer !

Yes, I guess that the collections department is still part of the hospital.

God and Government will solve everything for me. Since I don't rationally choose to merely stop going into private businesses that allow smoking, I instead choose for God and Government to make it so EVERYONE ELSE do my bidding for me. Poor, defenseless me, meek and weak.

God, please make it so men with guns create Eden for me...then I don't have to worry about sinning. Thank you.

Maybe in 50 years time our attitude towards tobacco may develop to be like our attitude towards opium today.

The Puritans would never allow such a situation

If you never have the opportunity to sin, how can you prove yourself moral by resisting sin?:D :D :D

Remember, even the Garden of Eden had a snake and an apple tree.

Id like to point out a little factoid. Our US Government makes BILLIONS taxing smokers. We pay for all sorts of new things that the nonsmokers get to use virtually free since they dont pay those taxes. Outlaw smoking and soon youll be wishing for the smokers to start paying your taxes again!!! Smokers spend a lot of money on thier habit and the tabacco companies in turn sponsor things like Ferrari, McClaren, Renault in F1. Phillip Morris gives Ferrari 22 million a race for 19 races. The kicker is only 3 or 4 tracks.locations allow ciggarette ads on the cars.

Mmmmm...........Opium. But then again I like cigarettes too. Maybe I was born 50 years too late.

Big brother is watching us, myaaaaaan. It's all a big conspiracy! Like, woaaaaah, n' sh*t. They're taking away our rights, myaaaan!

(spoken with a Chong-like accent, of course) :D

Ok I just have to reply to this one. I am a smoker. and I love to have a smoke, and a drink when I am out....

BUT...

Up here in Massachusetts the ban has now been in full effect for a couple of years, and I have to tell you, I am GLAD they banned the smoking inside. The rooms are clearer, my eyes last longer during the long matches and late nights. A lot of the places are adding outdoor patios! What is really nice is in between matches, is to grab your brew, have a friend watch your gear, walk outside in the clear air and light up. Clears the head, clears the mind, and can get you ready for the next game in a hurry.

I have to honestly change my opinion from my past comments. I think the ban is all right as long as the places make some sort of designated spot for the smokers, and I think that as long as everyone is accomodated and comfortable, then it shouldn't effect the game of pool that much.

I think the lack of media attention and public interest is the worst culprit.

True, but let us not forget that the US Govt takes OUR money by force and gives it to tobacco producers. That has averaged about $50 million per year the last ten years or so. Here's a chart showing the amounts:

Couldn't you have simply done all of that WITHOUT a ban? So why the need for a forced-backed law by some over the few? I don't smoke, so I just didn't frequent places that were too smoky. Simple solution. No guns necessary.

Anyone can give up their control of self, in this case, by agreeing with smoking bans, but one cannot give up responsiblity of self. That's all the people have accomplished: loss of control. But the respnsibilty for one's health still exists. That is a baaaaad trade-off. You've lost. We've lost. Pool has lost. The control-freaks have won....again. :(

Cruel reality gives lie to your naive optomisim. Pool based
bars and poolrooms have not, in general, recovered from smoking bans.
Not even from statewide ones.

I can't help but wonder, would you be quite so cavalier
if you had say, half a million dollars and 15 years of your life
invested in a biz that was about to go down the drain?
