Hey Guys,

i just watched footage from the 1966 US Open 14.1 finals, where Irving Crane ran a 150 and Out.

It was amazing !

it got me to thinking that i would like to watch some more of our old time legands.

does anyone have any good suggestions ?

somebody suggested to me that i need to watch some old Mizerak footage, it has been suggested to me that he was a bit of a machine when it came to Straight pool.

i believe i can learn an awful lot by watching some of the older footage, because i have been told my characteristics in 14.1 resemble the old school style of play.

Thanks Alot !
Steve

I'd like to watch some older action as well, especially if its color or re-done in color.. thatd be just amazing! too good to be true.

Great video

There is a great video with a 14-1 match with Willie Mosconi vs Jimmy Caras. The match is from 1963. Also my mentor LeRoy Kinman is one of the commentators on the tape. Try to pick that one up. It is worth while for a players collection.

yeah, i downloaded it. when irving crane almost scratches on ball 145? it's almost like he did it on purpose to keep us on the edge of our seats. lol... the announcer freaks but irving keeps his cool and takes a sip of water and then makes a tough cut-shot to continue his run. poor old joe balsis paid dearly for missing that small cluster in the middle of the table. at least he had a good seat from which to watch crane run 150 and out....

The opening wrap around combination is fantastic to start the run. He gets stuck and has to make another complicated combination later on in the run. Great stuff!

Pool History

I, too, have watched the Crane/Balsis match time and time again and never tire of it. That's one thing that's missing in pool - a readily available abundance of footage from matches played long ago. In a sport that places such high emphasis on players, poolrooms and cuemakers long departed, we have so little opportunity to view the great players of the past. Wouldn't most of us like to see the Wide World of Sports coverage of the Johnston City matches? Or other matches between famous players from the 50's, 60's and 70's? I'd love to be able to watch complete straight pool matches that include Mosconi, Mizerak, Martin, Crane, Balsis, etc. Even to see Fatty waddling around the table would be enjoyable and entertaining. It's a shame our brightest stars burned bright while they played and now we have no source to view them when they were at their best. If anyone knows where to get old footage of matches, especially straight pool, please PM me.

Thanks,
Ron F

1963? Where do you find that one?

I know there is a Mosconi - Caras match that was filmed about 1988 or so, when they were both way past their prime. It took place at some dinner honoring them. But 1963 would be much closer to their primes. I saw Caras in an exhibition around that year and he ran 125 and out. And Mosconi was running hundreds all the time back then.

So, where do we find this 1963 tape or DVD?

Well, I thought this tape was out in the Billiard supply stores. I searched the Web and it list it but I can not find it being sold. The match was from 1963 in Chicago from the Wide World of Sports tv show. I did find some AZ's writing about the tape. Post of "PalmerJohn": 1963 Jimmy Caras vs. Willie Mosconi film - 06-17-2008, 11:51 AM They list two links of the video but both links are no longer available.
I will look into maybe getting a copy made. Give me some time. I will not forget. I will get one for you.

That would be fantastic.

It appears that the video was posted in one place (surreypool?) and it has since been removed. A real shame to lose a piece of history like that. Maybe somebody saved it and can repost it somewhere so those who missed it the first time can see it.

Check with rschaade@yahoo.com.

He sells a lot of pool DVD's on eBay and sent me a 17 page word document listing his offerings. I'm sure he has something for you.

Hey Dogs, thanks for the link. Is there a way to copy it to a dvd so that you can keep it? I haven't watched it yet, but I will soon.
