Kamui SS Retip failed

Hi folks,

As I got a nice lathe at home, I thought I could do a new tip myself. I bought a couple of Kamuis. I did it like I saw on the instruction video. Ground the side, named "glue side" a bit on sand paper and glued the tip on. One time with epoxy, one time with cyanid glue (instant glue). Both time, the grey layer came off the leather layer. The thing separated within. That happened when I tried to cut the leather to the diameter of the ferrule with a carpet knive.

What did I do wrong? Am I supposed to cut the gray layer away before glueing?

Any idea?

Best regards

Gerhard

Sounds like a heat issue. I like to see a brand new razor blade on every tip.

There's not much you can do when one of the laminate glue layers fail internally. There's a good chance that's a manufacturing defect, especially if there's two different material layers as you describe (grey layer is different than the tip layers, right?)

When you trim the side of the tip flush with the ferrule, there's a lot of side pressure being placed on that tip. Obviously, the only thing holding it on the end of the ferrule (and together internally, if it's a laminated tip), is the glue. If your lathe has a tail stock, push it up against the tip. That will help counteract the side pressure.

I had the same problem with two laminated tips, back to back, and I always use the tail stock. After trimming, sanding, and burnishing the tip, it popped off as I shaped the tip, leaving the bottom layer glued to the ferrule. So, the tail stock can't help a defective tip.

Check for serial number and hologram stamp on it. If you can't find both on it might be a fake.

Hello again,
and thank you for your comments.

The tips were purchsed from Dynamic Billards. I think they would not sell fakes.

I was not aware, that the tips are so heat sensitive. I am also not sure, if I overheated them.

Here are 2 pictures of the tips. I hope you can see the gray base layer. Between gray layer and leather, the tips separated.

Best regards

Gerhard

These tips are genuine Kamuis, I posted the pics before. Grey layer is supposed to be the same material as black. The color difference is specified by Kamui for Dynamic Billard (European wholesaler).

Run your tailstock up (with a cupped live center), to support the tip, while you are trimming the sides. You won't have any more problems. Remeber too, that an off center hit, with too tall of a tip will tear the layers appart...JER
