Kamui tip question

I haven't had any issues with delamination. In fact, I find it moderately difficult to even cut the tips in half between the layers using a fresh razor blade. I initial shape them with my HSS tool post blade, then round them off to a perfect shape using a double cut file, all while spinning rather fast in the lathe. Of course different folks experience different things, so maybe i'm just lucky. But I think cutter sharpness is paramount in any tip application. I can use dull cutters & delaminate LePros......and yes I know LePro don't have laminations. I don't think heat is as much issue as a dull blade grabbing the leather & stressing it rather than cutting it. To be totally honest, I don't think I have ever experienced a tip getting warm or hot except to burnish the edges.

A big key is H20. Slightly wet the sides & crown each time you cut it and use a new ultra sharp razor and you'll have no problems. Heat and stress from dull tooling are main causes of delams. Install them using the Sniper method and you shouldn't have any issues.

I have never had a delamination problem with the kamuis either. I love the way these tips cut during installation. I tend to leave the tip as tall as I can unless the customer requests it being trimmed down. I figure if you are paying $35 for a tip, you better be getting $35 worth of tip. Trimming them down is just going to shorten the life of the tip. I personally play with a kamui hard, and I haven't had to shape that tip since I put it on. I prefer kamui tips to just about any laminated tip, but thats just my opinion. Everyone has their own preference.

I would also totally agree that a dull cutting blade will make a mess out of any tip Laminated or not, however, this was not the problem I had with these tips.:)

Thanks very much for the advise though, I am certain that it will help some one who reads this thread. I will stand by what I have said though, and for the record, I am very glad that others who have posted to this thread have had no problems.:)

Take Care

I second this!
