Kangaroo or Elephant ear?

Hello all,

I have mostly played with wrapless cues in the past. My new Padgett has a linen wrap on it and is way too slippery for my taste. I would like to go with a leather wrap. I want to make sure its nice and grippy/tacky. Soft and supple would be a bonus.

I was thinking of going with either kangaroo or elephant ear wrap. How do these two compare in terms of texture and feel? Hard like plastic or soft and cushy? How about durability, do they discolor and/or change hardness throughout its life?

Any comments are greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Asgar

Insert rant about exotic animal parts for cues is in bad taste here _____________

Were you born in 19th Century or something?

The characteristics you seek are found in Elephant Ear. Make sure the wrap is .030 or less. Cutting a wrap groove deeper will adversely effect your cue.

Snow Leopard or Giant Panda ears obviously would be ideal but if you can't find any of those, I'm 100% certain you can sit on the ice shelf during the Spring and get some Polar Bear ears which are just as soft. Better to go late in the Spring when they're REALLY starving for food because all the global warming has all but snuffed out their natural habitat.

On a more serious note than my last post - you might also look into a cork wrap. The Russ Espiritu cue I bought last year has a cork wrap, and I have to say, I like it a lot.

I like baby harp seal myself. You do have to be careful how you club them. Don't want to damage the ears. :D

Considering the wrap blanks I have right now, I would rate the Kangaroo as more "soft and supple", and the Elephant Ear as a bit "harder".

Both are soft and supple, while the EE is more grippy or tacky. Either one would be a classy addition to a cue. I am curious, what thickness are your Kangaroo and EE wraps?

Elephant ear is more porous.
Kangaroo is pretty smooth ( small pores ) but can be coated to be a little more sticky.
Elephant ear for the most parts is thicker.
And, btw, both are illegal in California. Figure that.

Didn't know they were illegal in CA. Most are not aware that Elephant Ear is about the only part of the Elephant that can be split to .030 or less and still be usable as a wrap. Kangaroo is not as thick as EE, but also needs to be split. Kangaroo can be split to .025, which is the same thickness as the linen we use, which makes it a easy replacement for linen. Either one needs to be split to the proper thickness.

I have a JW with black kangaroo. It is soft and pretty smooth. I have had it since 1983 and it has held up well. I would have this kangaroo leather wrap on any cue, it's a keeper for sure. JMO

I think I can help you out depending on what color u want...

My wife has 5 of these things, they are very soft & supple...

Is your linen wrap pressed? I've never personally played with a pressed linen wrap that was slippery.

'Roo is about .025, EE is about .035.

people whining about wildlife preservation etc:

http://www.greensage.com/ezine/08zines/06June08/RainforestWoodGuidelines.pdf

its highly likely that the cue you are holding in your hands might be from an endangered forest. you know.. where the -roo and the elephant and many more like to live in..

the man is asking a question and advice.. your need to express your anger, and mockery of a man who also happens to be here on this site for the same reason you are -love of the game-. does not qualify as a reply to the poster's question.

just because pig and cow population is higher doesnt mean that their lives and habitat preservaton deserve less attention or care. join greenpeace or WWF and stfu..

of course..
no disrespect.;)
