Was wondering if anyone had any information on why Karen had to forfeit in her match with Iris Ranola? It just says on the brackets that she had to forfiet due to injury. Thanks Rob

During the stream the commentators said she had back troubles. Her match was actually going to be the streamed match but she requested to not play on the TV table because it was already hurting her and she knew she may not be able to complete the match so didn't want to do that to the TV audience.

One of the posters on the stream chat was saying she had neck pain associated with ear surgery she recently had done.

But according to the commentators it was her back.

thanks for the info. Having had major back problems myself, I know all to well what it's like to try to shoot through the pain. I hope she gets back to normal very soon! :)

I'm also in the back pain boat. Every time I play my game is dictated by how much my back is going to affect my play. The young players who play without pain are so lucky and when I was young I took it for granted.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR BACK while you are young!

James

I hate my back pain. It ends my practice and playing sessions much too often.

I think I need to lose some weight. I'm turning into a fatass. :(

Indeed Back problems are no joke. I was 23 when I broke my lower back, the part that surrounds the spinal cord broke free and my spine shifted forward. I was nearly paralyzed. After a major fusion and a year of rehab. I was back to normal. Amazingly, my back is now stronger than it ever was. When I let myself get out of shape in my late 20's up till early 30's, I would try to play pool for long sessions and could hardly bend by the end of the night and barely could move the next morning. Now that I have gotten myself into shape and concentrated on strengthening my back, I am feeling great an no longer a have such issues. So take care of yourself my friends and your pool livelyhood will not suffer. :)

What a Move!

Karen is a class act all the way! She anticipated her health may be an issue and acted professionally in her request to not disappoint the audience. With all due respect WHY doesn't some billiard related company not sponsor her??
I am amazed that no one is willing to back her!!
Dan

She's definitely a trooper. She was making faces everytime she was at the table (which wasn't too often at the beginning). Iris played extremely well to top it off and took an early 4 - 1 lead.

At 4 - 2, Karen just couldn't be herself and played a weak safe in the next game, which allowed Iris to bank out. Before Iris's next break, Karen approached the table and said she couldn't take it anymore.

She truely showed some huge heart by playing through pain in the sport that she loves. Brett Favre played through broken fingers, etc, which is a true test of a Great One and Karen definitely tried.

Let's hope she got some rest and is able to give it a go today.

Karen's webmaster stated on the stream that the surgeon had to go in through the neck to work on an inner ear problem that was long time chronic. Just for general information, back pain is the most expensive non-life threatening medical condition to the tune of over $100,000,000,000 annually. Yes the number of zero's are correct. Hope she does well today.

She was definitely hurting. As it happened her match was on the table in the background of the stream. At one point she missed a shot with BIH.

Hopefully a good night's rest and some ibuprofen will get her back to where she can finish the tournament.

Wow, I played her on Wednesday in the charity event and had no idea. I do recall however another San Diego Classic a few years ago when she was feeling unwell when playing in the televised rounds. She actually looked like she was going to throw up right on the table at some points but she got through the match. I hope she gets better soon.

Where you playing snooker? :p

Someone on the stream chat was saying that she actually was having neck pain from a recent ear surgery where they went through her neck to get at it. The commentators were saying it was her back.

EDIT: I just checked the WPBA website for the day 2 recap and she indeed was complaining of neck pain.

There were no results posted of her 2:30P match with Kim White so I don't know if she played today or withdrew. Actually there are no results for any of the 2:30P matches posted up yet so they are probably not all completed.

She played today and beat White.

You know, when I first introduced myself to this game, ESPN were always featuring the whole Karen vs. Allison with the "who's on top" matches, as the only pool on TV at the time. That was when Allison ruled the number one spot, with Karen holding second steadily. Not knowing anything about pool, I happened to be on my own Allison bandwagon, and not liking Karen whatsoever. She just seemed like some super serious, angry woman at the table.

It wasn't until YEARS later, when ESPN actually broadcasted a personalized interview with her, that I got to see the ever-charming, funny, and intelligent side of Karen's personality. It really threw me, because of the strong image that she portrayed at the table.

Now knowing what I do about the game, I have to like her so much more. Her and Allison are legends in their own right.

I wish her the best of health!

Heh, no, although coincidentally enough she was using a slightly odd looking cue with an Ash shaft and a tiny, Snooker sized tip. The butt was Snooker style; wrapless, ebony with butterfly splices but into Maple instead of Ash.

Get well soonest Karen!!
