Olhausen table, fairly loose pockets, four player field: Allison Fisher, Kelly Fisher, Karne Corr, Monica Webb. Two races to four, with a tiebreaker rack if the sets are split.

First semifinal - Allison Fisher vs Kelly Fisher
Gosh darn it, I missed all of it, as I worked today. Iwas told that the two races to four were split and Allison won the tiebreaker to advance to the final.

Second semifinal - Karen Corr vs Monica Webb
In set 1, the key moment came with Corr ahead 2-1. Karen missed the shape on the six, because she unintentionally cheated the pocket while pocketing the previous ball. Corr managed to jum the six in, however, a great shot, which set up a runout for 3-1 ahead. In the next rack, a defensive error by Corr gives Webb an opening, but she misses the two, and moments later Karen combos in the relatively simple three-nine combo to end the first set, 4-1.

Set 2 opens with a great kick safe by Webb, but Corr jumps it in, and then plays safe only passably. Webb plays a nice safe, and Corr make the hit, leavng no shot on the four but a four nine combo that's quite challenging. Webb its it well for a 1-0 lead. Corr appears that she will break and run the next, but misses the shpe on the six, and then misses the ball. Webb's runout makes it 2-0. A missed kick by Webb in the next rack gives Corr an opening, but the three has no pocket, and Karen misses the bank. Webb captures the rack for 3-0 and it sure looks like te match is headed for the tiebreaker. When Corr overcuts the three in the next rack, it looks like Webb will run out the set, but she misses an easy five ball, and Corr pulls to witin 3-1. Dry break by Webb leaves no shot, and Corr safety only passable. Nice two way shot by Webb puts Corr to the test, but Monica wins the battle for control of the table. Once again, itlooks like she will run out, but a mistake keeps karen alive and it is 3-2. Corr gets out in the next one for 3-3, double hill. Solid break by Monica gives her a third look at the finish line, but she'll need to make a tough cut of the two ball up the long rail and she is not up to it. Karen runs out to wn the set and the match.

Final $25,000 winner take all: Allison Fisher vs Karen Corr
Set 1 came down to combination shots. Corr was outstanding in jumping out to a 2-0 lead. At 2-0, Corr made a brilliant two-nine combo to go up 3-0, and Allison had a seven-nine combo in the subsequent rack to pull within 3-1, but missed it, so Corr won the set 4-0.

Set 2 opened with a push by Allison that, in my books, was way too passive, and Karen, predictably hooked her. allison makes the hit, and Karen will have to run into the three while pocketing the two. She hits it superbly to pocket the ball and get the shape and runs out for 1-0. Corr makes a ball on the next break, but must play safe, and gives Allison a look at a shot on the two, but Allison hooks herself while pocketing the ball and then misses the kick. Karen runs the rack for 2-0. Nice break by fisher but little reward. Still, she manages to get to the point where se has a tricky three-seven combo and the balls jam against each other, with neither dropping. Very unlucky. Still, the runout Corr made from there had to be seen to be believed, as the key shot was a long bank of the four ball into a ball leaning over the opposite corner and she also had to make a six eight combo to get out for 3-0, and was equal to the challenge. Dry break by Corr doesn't leave much, but Allison plays a superb safety, and Karen misses the very difficult kick. Allison runs out tidily to pull within 3-1. Inclusive of the last four racks against Webb, Corr had won eleven consecutive racks, but this ended that streak. Allison scratches on the break, and although Karne doesn't run it, she secures the rack, the set and the match, winning te $25,000 prize.

All things considered, Corr was brilliant in this one and was a very deserving champion.

When the match was over, I caught up with all of the following: Kelly Fisher, Val Finnie, Monica Webb, Helena Thornfeldt, Gerda Hofstatter, Ewa Laurance, Allison Fisher, Karen Corr, Julie Kelly and Jean Balukas, and it was nice seeing my friends again.

races to 4?

i hate tv matches.

i think this is the womens version of the champions of champions tourney but they only have 4 players instead of 8 and 2 races to 4 and a sudden death game if they split sets instead of 2 races to 5 like the men have, winner gets 25k instead of 50k

Congrats to Karen!

In my books she is the best female player there is! I hope she will have many prosperous years still to come.

I think she has the most heart of all the top ladies there are competing at the moment, and she's extremely nice personality btw...

This year was the first time the races weren't to five.

sjm,
Yes, those "marathon" races to five were just too grueling for the competitors; anyone a bit out of shape didn't stand a chance. I'm anxiously awaiting next years event (they are reducing the number of balls on the table to 2, and racing to one....more time for commercials).

P.S. - thanks for the insightful updates, I wish I was there.

Today should be fun with Team USA (which includes Jeanette Lee, Mike Massey and two others) vs Team Europe (which includes Ewa Laurance, Steano Pelinga and two others) in The World Cup of Trick shots. I'll be breakfasting with one of the participants shortly.

sjm,
Say hello for me. I was able to attend a few practice sessions here in Indy with a couple of the USA team members (my ball spotting and racking technique has improved appreciably). I looked at the list of shots for the competition (well, actually I've seen them all attempted successfully) and was just blown away by the level of difficulty that will be on display in this competition. Have a great time, and post if you can the results.

I'm thinking this gives Karen the lead in the Women's Player of the Year Race.

Karen Corr - 1st at BCA Open, 1st at WPBA Oklahoma, 1st at Challenge of Champions
Allison Fisher - 1st a WPBA Florida, 1st at US Open, 2nd at BCA Open.
Xiaoting Pan - 1st at the World Championships, 1st at WPBA Michigan City, 2nd at WPBA Carolina.

The WPBA Nationals next week should decide it.
