Keeping Score in 14.1

How do you guys keep score in 14.1? I ask because I played in a 14.1 tournament here recently and the scoring system and scoresheets were very contrived and everything had its own box where you had to mark, balls, made, innings, fouls, safeties, etc. The opponents were constantly watching and checking off balls as they were being made, which seemed like a waste of energy to me.

I'm not much of a straight pool player, but when I played back home, I used a scoring system where you just record the number of balls on the table everytime a player's turn ends. Then simply subtract the number of balls on the table at the beginning of the run from the number left when they are done (add 14 to the number everytime there is a re-rack). It's simple and no need to count during the games.

I've seen other ways to do it as well, so I'm just wondering how you all keep score and if you use scoresheets, I would appreciate if you could post those as well.

Thanks,
Vic

Sounds like an easy way to do it. No many pool halls have the beads these days. Only one where I live has beads and there is a sign asking you not to use the beads (because they are about 90 years old).

The beads are the best way to keep score and it also allows spectators to view the game progress as well......BUT.....when the pool hall doesn't have a set of beads
that keeps score up to 50 points per side, you need an alternative. If you are practicing, an app on your phone works fine. However, in an actual match, it's poorly suited
due to phone call interruptions, opponent wants to see the score, who updates it (both you and your opponent), etc. The beads are best unless it's an electronic scoreboard.

Nonetheless, if you like to play straight pool, and your pool hall doesn't have the right set of beads to use, then the minature counter works best......you can place them side
by side on a counter, table or shelf......anywhere you can place a drink, you can place these score counters....go somewhere to play and there's no beads and you wanna play
straight pool with someone, whip these little bad boys out from your car trunk, or a small equipment bag like I carry, and Voila....straight pool score-keeping made easy.

Personally, I'd like to see an electronic version like a chess clock that displays the numbers on the left and right sides.....imagine 89 and 76.....in a race of 150 (total displayed)
in orange numbers.....program it to show you balls per innings.......safety play........this could be a cool thing.....I have always wanted to make something like that.....but it only has
appeal to straight pool players which are few and far between nowadays........Ergo, these minature counters are the best substitute to beads......IMO.

When you talk about beads, do you mean that there are 2 sets of like 200 beads on a string above or somewhere near the table? I'm trying to picture it in my head.

Google "bead scoring system youtube" for a good 4 min 42 second count instruction.
There are 100 beads. 50 beads for each player and separated by 5 with different colors.
There are tags every 10 beads to keep track of ball counts for each player.. 10, 20, ect.

I've seen practice golf balls used on a rod.. 4 whites, 1 orange.. 4 whites, 1 orange, ect.

EDIT.... Watching the video I noticed he said he pulled 7 beads when he actually pulled 6.

When deducting beads I pull from the total count first and then pull from the current count.
Then it's like the bead runs straight through.. From total side into the current and then out.

If you buy beads as shown in post #16 the string is pulled and beads are strung on the wire.

didn't read all answers, but now adays, check on iphone apps.

Smart phone apps, some of them have easy and neat layout, with clear view, and if you have that iphone stand, you can also set it up on the table where it would be visible to everybody around the table, and if you got tablet like ipad or something, install the same app and it's a even larger scoreboard.

WTF is wrong with the world when scoring beads are too difficult to figure out, or are too much trouble, and using a smart phone or tablet is considered better?

Its fooking beads on a string, the concept goes back to somewhere around 2400 BC. Not too hard to figure out......... :)

I guess it whatever you're use too or what ever makes you comfortable (or both players). I'm not sure if you were asking in general or for your league.
I mostly use the beads above the table for rooms that supply it, I find that very easy.
When i'm playing at a room that doesn't have beads I have an app on both my phone and iPad that works great, what i like about it is it also give an average, you can set players names, races number etc (it's called billiardsbuddy, don't know if it's available for android)
lastly, this is the sheet that that my league uses (it's my best match ever without any big runs, that's why i keep a copy)

I have beads, 15 black, 15 white, we use for the rack. At the end of the rack we have the total on paper, then use the beads the next rack.
Works ok, but I like the way this one works "Round Base 4 Digit Manual Hand Tally Mechanical Palm Click Counter", using that for rotation.
Will try it and lose what, $10 ??? Might be a great thing.

I have couple questions about your score sheet?

S means Safe shot?
9/4 - 9 points on last rack, and another 4 points after break shot an new rack?
What the horizontal line means for your opponent?

Yes S is safe, you don't have to but i like too in order to show how that game actually went.
Yes that would be 9 from the last rack and 4 in this rack since it's the same inning kind da. Honestly I don't remember what we did if you keep going (thinking to myself, yup nothing)..... yea, i got nothing.
it's the same as zero, some people just like drawing a like rather than zero. When we play both beads and sheet is used, one to keep the other in check. Both players do both for each other so there's no rule about who does what but some players (the ones new to the game mostly) can't manage the beads so the ask to do the paper and you do the beads.
