I was never a big country fan but after years on the table and in the clubs listening to the jukebox I did acquire a taste for country and listen to most types of music these days ... The man in Black certainly was special... There are so many good songs he wrote and I think even his last couple albums were terrific ... They were a gift he left us with

I like one of the last songs of his " HURT " among alot of his oldies..

Remember that in order for all of us to do what we want here in America there are those of us that have sacrificed a great deal to allow all Americans this right and the right of freedom.... There would be no Kieth's , Varner's ,Siegal's , Fatboy , Jam , Me or you if not for these brave men ... And there would be a much stiffer penalty then being banned when someone said something that was not allowed ... In Cash's final years he remembered those and wrote this song ... There are many copies of it ... But this one always brings a tear to my eye... Every generation of my family has served to protect this great country ... My Dad was Navy so I went Navy as soon as I was old enough ... My son wants to go Marine I want him to carry on or where my dad and me went but he is his own man... My uncle was Army and never came back the same but at least he came back even if we had to take care of him for the rest of his life because he was no longer able to it was a honor ... He passed a few years ago and was given a millitary burial... Remember no matter how bad you think you have it there are those that have it worst then you see here on this board. This is one of my favorites by Johnny Cash it always brings a tear to my eye....

This one is a little more rare ... The video is a little corny but the song is one I have always liked ... Does anyone know what type of cue stick that is that Johnny Cash throws to the kid? Sorry not trying to hijack the thread just following it and saw the Johnny Cash refrences...

"HURT" wasn't one of Johnny's songs. It was his cover of "HURT" by Nine Inch Nails. I did like Johnny's version, though. Not quite the original, but pretty darn good on its own.

It certainly is not your fault. I appreciate your kind words about Keith.

I don't understand why there is such hatred in this pool world, but I am finding more and more that there are quite a few who seem to derive pleasure from posting mean-spirited words, to include untruths. For whatever reason, that is forum culture, I guess. There's some good pool folks on this forum, to include you. :)

JAM

You will have bad. Its all part of life. What he said was totally uncalled for. But some people are just like that. I have found from spending time around bars playing pool, and even when I was playing music, that some people just wanna complain and cause trouble. Most of the time, it's because of their own pitiful life. They aren't happy with their accomplishments, or their present life situation, and can't stand that anyone else is.
Jam, from all I have heard about you and Keith, and the way you talk about him, just ignore it. Don't sweat the small stuff. The majority of the people on this forum, love your posts, and really love the post's that Keith makes here.
His accomplishments speak for themself. No-one is perfect, or ever lead a perfect life. But if Keith is happy with the legendary life he's led, and you 2 are happy together, that speaks for itself.
As for rude comments, some people just suck.......

For what its worth...

I have always had a special bond with Johnny Cash. He and I share the same birthday, along with Jackie Gleason. He passed away on my daughter's birthday. :sorry:

I grew up listening to Johnny Cash. My family is definitely a little countrified. We all play music; bluegrass, to be exact. I even have an autographed picture of Johnny which I cherish.

This has to be my all-time favorite. I can just hear him now, as he walks out onto the stage, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash": http://youtube.com/watch?v=k7K4jH7NqUw

Here's Keith's Johnny Cash song  : http://youtube.com/watch?v=2eI4BumtpfA

Today, in the autumn of my life, this is the one I seem to gravitate to: http://youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go

"Everyone I know goes away in the end."

JAM

P.S. Thanks to everyone for the very kind words. They are truly appreciated.

Jam,
I know you to be a good, solid person with good moral values. It pains me to see you lower yourself to this idiots level when you respond to his diatrebes and uninformed rantings, I know its difficult not to lash out in kind. Just rise above it. We (most AZer's) will cut his legs out from under him, thereby saving you the trouble of wasting one sentence of your valuable contributions to this website. Say hi to Keith for me. Wish I'd known him better. Our lifes paths were very similar.(except he shot a whole lot straighter)

Regards,

Dick

I'm trying to ID this cue myself, but the tables look like Centennials.
It's not the same kind of cue he used in the movie, but I'm going to go pop that one in again today anyway!
Great video, I've been trying to find that one for a while-

Great video, I've been trying to find that one for a while-

We had a thread about this movie a while back, and I cut-and-pasted this bit of movie trivia, for all those interested:
I found the Sotheby's auction of the cue stick used by Johnny Cash in the movie "The Baron." It sold for $6,000.

The auction read: Property from the Estate of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash

JOHNNY CASH POOL CUE IN CASE FROM THE FILM "THE BARON AND THE KID"

600-800 USD
Lot Sold. Hammer Price with Buyer's Premium: 6,600 USD

DESCRIPTION:
Two-piece cue with extra upper shaft, with sand paper and two keys; case inscribed The Baron; the cue with pearl inlay and inscribed Baron and Johnny Cash. 2 items

In 1981, Johnny Cash released the album "The Baron." The title track made its debut at #76 and rose to a high of #10 on the country charts. In 1984, Johnny Cash starred in the movie "The Baron and the Kid" abut a pool hustler who befriends a boy. Johnny used this cue in the movie. The cue was also used in publicity for the album.

Here's a picture of it below. They were asking 6- to 800 and got 6 dimes! There's a little piece of American pool trivia! There aren't too many songs written about pool, American style!

And here's some more movie smut:
According to the credits, Gregory Allen Webb from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, played "Billie Joe."

The name of Johnny Cash's piano man for over 20 years is Earl Poole Ball. That his name in real life. He had a role as "Dr. Pockett" in the movie.

Interestingly, Mike Massy had a role in this flick as well, playing a guy named "Manning."

Then on another pool forum, there was this:
There's a poster on another forum who was there when they shot this movie in Chattanooga. He posted: Coincedentaly,Johnnie Cash made a movie about the" Baron and the Kid" and several of us locals from Chattanooga were in it.My wife and myself along with Butch Burroughs,Dicky Roberts,Phil Hunt,Glen Young and Mike Massey. Came out in 1983.A stinker of a movie but we got to meet Johnnie Cash,June Carter Cash,Darren McGavin, Claude Akins,Tracy Polland (Who later married Michael J Fox) and a good friend of Johnnie Cash who was on the set Waylon Jennings. Memorable experience for all.I have a few copies of the movie(450 to be exact, if anyone would like a copy.) Just kidding. But I did enjoy being around the stars.

Now, here is the interesting tidbit. The stick used in that video clip was NOT the stick auctioned off by Sotheby's, but there was a different stick used in the movie than in this musical video, I think.

The stick below is the stick used in the movie! It sure is a small world sometimes, but I enjoyed learning about that Johnny Cash movie.

In my book, you can't beat Johnny Cash or Mike Massey. I don't know if it was mentioned but I think McDermott supplied the cues for the movie.

What an EXCELLENT piece of pool trivia. Thanks for sharing that article about the movie, Johnny Cash, and Mike Massey.

Wow, Mike looks a little taller than Johnny even. I've seen Mike many times in person, and he is tall, but I always thought Johnny was pretty tall too! :p

I love this kind of pool trivia stuff! Keep it coming! :)

I personally found his candor, when he said he wished he'd had a couple beers before the IPT match, refreshing. TV wants to protray a certain image about sports. You never see the PGA guys smoking their stogies on TV. Soon enough they'll ban chewing tobacco at the ball park.

Human beings behaving humanly.... remarkable...

I'll stop now...this post IS LIKE A NIGHTMARE.... it just keeps getting worse and worse... :rotflmao1:

With everybody eating organic hot dogs and drinking bottled Fiji water, I strongly advised Keith that maybe drinking beer might not be the right thing to do at this event. We had a long discussion about it, which got pretty heated at various times. I won!

Here's one of my favorite quotes from TCOM:

Eddie Felson: Do you smell that?

Vincent Lauria: What, smoke?

Carmen: No, Money...

And that's what everybody was smelling in Orlando!

Say what you want about Keith MacCready, but whether you like him or not, he IS an American original! Just as much as John MacEnroe, Barry Bonds, John Daly, Allen Iverson, or Deon Saunders. I've known Keith since he was a stringy haired teenager who refused to back down from the best pool players in the world. It's only too bad he didn't have a bigger stage to showcase his talents. If he had, he might have become a superstar too.

Of all the pool players I've seen in my life, Ronnie, Keith and Louie had the most charisma and star power. Everybody wanted to watch these guys play, even if two "champions" were playing on the next table. No question Keith had immense talent (and probably still has) at pool, but he had something else too. Keith had crowd appeal! Pool could use a dozen more just like him. Unfortunately there is no mold for people like Ronnie, Keith and Louie. That's why they are American originals!

Who's close today? Alex, and that's about it.
I was at the US Open a couple of years ago when Keith finished THIRD against the strongest players in the world. He was beating champions right and left and no other pro had as many pro players watching their matches as Keith did. He's one of the most entertaining players i've watched play and i've attended the US Open for the last 15 years.

What happens to players like Keith and other players like him really is not a mystery. After we reach a certain age in life our skills diminish and if our only source of income is generated from our ability to play pool then we have a problem, due to the economics of the game.

Success is not judged solely on how much money you have,it is also judged in many other ways, including how many friends you have, what you have accomplished, and how you will be remembered. So consequently we have winners and losers, Keith McReady is clearly a winner.

RunoutalloverU and Pii the person who defended his post are two people that I do not know personally, but I don't think i'm missing a hell of a lot. If we could put a hundred people in a room along with McReady, RunnalloverU,and Pii the room would probably look something like this.RunnoutalloverU and Pii would be talking to one another and Keith and the rest of the crowd would be having a lot of fun on the other side of the room.
This is very well said and by one of the sports most respected players and personalities.....

Keith

Great videos. I wish there more.

Hearing all the stories about Keith and watching him play aren't bad for pool. They are bad for work. I feel like playing hooky from work to go play pool;)

What happens to players who just fade away?

PROG8R said:
My only question is what happens to players like him and Jesse Bowman that have so much natural talent just fade away?

The original post also begs the question in reference to Jesse Bowman. I have known Jesse since he was 12 years old and running with his buddy Jon Kucharo. Jesse and his brother could beat almost anyone who came into their Dad's pool room in Moline, Illinois back then. I don't know what has happened to Jesse but if I had to guess, I would say he has decided not to join the pro ranks in a sport where first place prize money in a major world tournament does not equal the bonus a caddy makes for carrying the bag for a top five finisher in a weekly PGA tournament. Knowing the class act that he can look up to with his family, I suspect his Dad encouraged him to go to college and become a professional in another field.

You are correct about not turning pro due to the lack of money in pool. But Jesse did not go off to College he has had a couple kids and playing poker like a mad man. I believe he was at the WSOP what is crazy is about3 months back he matched up with SVB 1- hole for 5k a set SVB got him with jesse not picking up a cue in over a month. The next night they matched up again Bowman practiced alone for about an hour or 2 before the match they played and it was over before it began lets just say as someone who was there first hand to watch SVB walked up to Jesse and said im done you got me know you ready to go on the road with me:D its unreal the natural ability Jesse has.

The first time I ever saw Jesse Bowman was at the Super Billiards Expo in Valley Forge several years ago. He was kind of flying under the radar at that time and wasn't into playing poker full time quite yet.

Keith pulled me aside at the action table and said that every time that the redhead (Jesse Bowman) was up, I should bet on him.

I almost hesitate to relay this fact, due to the recent discussion on this forum about David Matlock, but I'm going to put it out there anyway, since Jesse doesn't seem to be playing pool much anymore.

According to Keith McCready, Jesse Bowman is the best bar table player in the country right now, at least at the time of the Valley Forge event. Coming from Keith, that speaks volumes, IMHO! :)

JAM

You bet your ass it speaks volumes i bet Jesse would love to hear that. In fact you are correct in saying that in fact he was the best for years on a bar table and if he got in the game for only a couple monthes to get back he would be again. Jesse went down to Olath home of the quote unquote best Matlock back in like 98-2000 and won 7 of the 9 tourneys on the box:D Everyone knows Jesse is a phenom as was Keith its crazy i dont know Keith but i do know jesse and he will be tickled SHITLESS to hear the praise from Keith. Still to this day Jesse is top 5 in the World on the box
